Book Women and Indian Society

Download or read book Women and Indian Society written by Andal Narayanan and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Women and Indian Society: Options and Constraints is all about the women of India: the way they were perceived during the ancient times, the perceptions of their role in a matriarchal society, and the changes that cropped up in their lives during the freedom struggle. However, not much ground appears to have been covered in analysing the causes for the subordinate status of the Indian women. The author has explained the core causes for their cloistered roles, and their marginalisation, and has put forth some key factors that could empower them with an identity of their own and supply them with a viable escape route out of a state of entrapment. The basic reasons for subjugation of women in India are lack of education, denial of exposure to activities outside the homes, and an unreasonable rationalisation that such education or exposure will not improve their lot anyway. This has led to a self-fulfilling prophesy type of consequence, and left the women unchanged. This work is meant to be used as a reference book by serious researchers in women's studies, which has been included as an interdisciplinary subject in most of the Indian universities. Both informative and intimidating, the contents of this book are expected to start a progressive thought process in the minds of discerning readers."

Book Interrogating Women s Education

Download or read book Interrogating Women s Education written by Karuna Chanana and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book attempts first to focus on the family, socialisation and education, and then on organisational aspects of universities and professional life of women. It explores the paradoxes in the lives of women by interrogating the process of formal education. On the one hand, new opportunities in education and career are expanding the options of women, whereas on the other, most women do not make choices on the bases of their intellectual capacities and aspirations. Thought provoking, critical and analytical, this anthology will be invaluable to scholars, policy-makers, planners and activists."

Book Women Education And Family Structure In India

Download or read book Women Education And Family Structure In India written by Carol C Mukhopadhyay and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-28 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five decades of independence have produced dramatic increases in womens’ educational achievements in India; but education for girls beyond a certain level is still perceived as socially risky. Based on ethnographic data and historical documents, this book explores the origins of that paradox. Contributors probe the complex relationships between traditional Indian social institutions the joint family, arranged marriage, dowry, and purdah, or sexual segregation and girls schooling. They find that a patrifocal family structure and ideology are often at the root of different family approaches to educating sons and daughters, and that concern for marriageability still plays a central role in womens’ educational choices and outcomes.
