Download or read book The Edible and Game Birds of British India written by James A. Murray and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Edible and Game Birds of British India: With Its Dependencies and Ceylon The publication of this work is a fulfilment of the promise held out in the August (1887) number of the Indian Annals and Magazine of Natural Science (a monthly periodical then conducted by me for the Victoria Natural History Institute) to issue a series of works on the Fauna and Flora of the various Presidencies and Provinces in India. It is the second of the series, and has, owing to the subject falling within the limits of the Avifauna of India, and to the similarity of the labour involved in completing the larger work, taken the place of what was begun in the Annals, viz., "The Reptiles of Western India, including Sind," which awaits further materials. It was only at the repeated requests of a number of subscribers to my "Avifauna of British India," as well as of sportsmen and others, that the additional labour was undertaken, it having been shown that volumes of 1,000 and more pages would be an encumbrance to them in their Shikar travels, which now, from the southernmost point of India to the "Abode of Snow," by rail and other facilities, is a pleasure trip of but a few days. At the same time the book furnishes all the necessary information in regard to the "Close season" for Game Birds, and by its study would prevent any infringement of the Game Laws; and also afford information as to what substitutes could be had during the breeding season of certain species. In these respects it would be a manual for all District Officers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: If there is a frontier beyond organic, local, and seasonal, beyond farmers' markets and sustainably raised meat, it surely includes hunting, fishing, and foraging your own food. A lifelong angler and forager who became a hunter late in life, Hank Shaw has chronicled his passion for hunting and gathering in his widely read blog, Hunter Angler Gardener Cook, which has developed an avid following among outdoor people and foodies alike. Hank is dedicated to finding a place on the table for the myriad overlooked and underutilized wild foods that are there for the taking—if you know how to get them. In Hunt, Gather, Cook, he shares his experiences both in the field and the kitchen, as well as his extensive knowledge of North America's edible flora and fauna. With the fresh, clever prose that brings so many readers to his blog, Hank provides a user-friendly, food-oriented introduction to tracking down everything from sassafras to striped bass to snowshoe hares. He then provides innovative ways to prepare wild foods that go far beyond typical campfire cuisine: homemade root beer, cured wild boar loin, boneless tempura shad, Sardinian hare stew—even pasta made with handmade acorn flour. For anyone ready to take a more active role in determining what they feed themselves and their families, Hunt, Gather, Cook offers an entertaining and delicious introduction to harvesting the bounty of wild foods to be found in every part of the country.
