Download or read book The Ecstasies of St Francis written by John Haule and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 2004-07 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Initiates encompasses long centuries of human existence and reflects our great search--the greatest search of all--the quest for the spirit. This book describes the motivations behind external history, the growth of religious striving, the rise and fall of cultures, and indicates their importance for us today. It reflects the lives and deeds of human beings of extraordinary stature: Rama, Krishna, Hermes, Moses, Orpheus, Pythagoras, Plato, and Jesus. In these pages one witnesses spiritual adventure of a depth and intensity rarely experienced by creative human beings, even in their most exalted moments. This excitement of discovery which breathes through The Great Initiates may well explain its continuing popularity after over a century.

The warmth of Franciscan love and joy radiates from every page. The best-loved stories of the Poverello and his followers are all here: Francis's sermon to the birds... the Stigmata... the wolf of Gubbio... the preaching of St. Anthony... the soaring "Canticle of Brother Sun"... the lives and sayings of Brother Juniper and Brother Giles. This edition -- the only complete version -- has been translated into modern English by Raphael Brown, the well-known Franciscan scholar whose own deep feeling for St. Francis has helped him capture the spirit and flavor that gives these writings their indescribable charm. Truly universal is the appeal of this book, extending to people of all faiths and of every intellectual level. It is wise, very funny, rich in human wisdom, inspiring. Above all, it is a love story... the story of how the Little Poor Man taught the world about the love of Christ, and how this love can be lived and enjoyed by everyone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A very common failing amongst men is to adopt one extreme in the endeavor to avoid another, and sometimes not to perceive that the extreme into which they fall is greater than that which they had sought to flee from. To insure themselves against weak incredulity, some have imbibed such prejudice against the miracles in the Lives of the Saints, that they cannot endure to hear of them; the very ideas of miracles, revelations, ecstasies, visions, apparitions, are hateful and disgusting to them; all that is said on these subjects they look upon as fabulous and incredible; they call in question the most undeniable evidence, or attribute these wonders to natural and unknown causes. The wonders which are recorded in the Life of St, Francis, afford an opportunity of grappling with these prejudices.

Book The Life of St Francis of Assisi

Download or read book The Life of St Francis of Assisi written by Candide Chalippe and published by Mediatrix Press. This book was released on 2019-08-21 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Francis de Sales said, that while many saints should be imitated, some of the saints are to be admired more than imitated. The life of St. Francis gives us some of both. On the one hand, his extraordinary love of God, his humility, his penance, his charity, his prudence and his detachment from and loathing for the world, are all virtues that every Christian should seek to emulate throughout his life. On the other hand, his discernment of spirits, his miracles, his extraordinary fasting and mortification of his body, his ecstasies and the stigmata are all things God performed in St. Francis for our wonderment, to give glory to Him for what He brought about in his servant. We have provided a spiritual classic, Fr. Candide Challipe's Life of St. Francis, translated by the Oratorians of London into English. The value of Challipe's narrative, having compiled all of the sources available at the time of his writing (1700's) is that he balances the narrative between the two different elements which made Francis one of the greatest saints in the history of the Church. Challipe's work is not only a spiritual tour de force, but is also a great work of theology, as he unfolds the life of St. Francis with respect to the subsequent theology of the Church through St. Bonaventure, St. Thomas, The Council of Trent and St. Robert Bellarmine. He quotes frequently not only from the Franciscan sources, but also from the Holy Scripture, the Fathers, and the great Theologians of the Middle Ages and the early modern period. The important feature of the Mediatrix press edition is that in reprinting Chalippe's text, we have broken the work into chapters to make the work readable for modern audiences, while at the same time leaving it unabridged. It also contains works of art from the life of St. Francis cycle attributed to Giotto in Assisi.

Book The Concept of Freedom in the Writings of St Francis de Sales

Download or read book The Concept of Freedom in the Writings of St Francis de Sales written by Eunan McDonnell and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the examination of the concept of freedom in the writings of St Francis de Sales the author concludes that, in contradistinction to a contemporary understanding of freedom perceived as self-determination, a Salesian understanding privileges freedom's relationship to 'the good'. This situates St Francis de Sales in the classical Thomistic tradition of freedom's necessary relationship to the good, but involves a methodological shift as he employs the Renaissance starting point of 'the turn to the subject'. This study demonstrates how St Francis arrives inductively at what St Thomas demonstrated deductively, namely, the essential relationship of freedom to the good. Along with this Thomistic influence, the author analyses the Salesian indebtedness to Augustinian anthropology which explains the primacy St Francis gives to the will, and consequently, to love. Love, understood as the heart's movement towards the good, allows the Salesian approach to move beyond the confines of a traditional faculty psychology to embrace a more biblical understanding of the human person. This examination of love's relationship to freedom reveals their teleological and archaeological natures, coming back to our origins wherein we discover the source of our freedom bestowed on us as a gift from God.

He is known also for his writings on the topic of spiritual direction and spiritual formation, particularly the Introduction to the Devout Life and the Treatise on the Love of God. In 1583, De Sales went to the Collège de Clermont (later renamed Lycée Louis-le-Grand) in Paris, then a Jesuit institution, to study rhetoric and humanities. Book The Little Flowers of Saint Francis

Download or read book The Little Flowers of Saint Francis written by Brother Ugolino Boniscambi and published by Paraclete Press. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These stories of St. Francis and his first followers have inspired millions of people over the centuries. Since they were first committed to paper, they have motivated people to become better followers of Jesus (not St. Francis). For that reason, they have endured unlike any other early Franciscan literature. Many of the stories are known to us from other biographical sources, but in some cases, here they are expanded or made more florid. This edition of The Little Flowers is unique in its physical beauty as well as its editorial arrangement. For the first time, the stories have been arranged in the most likely chronological ordering of when they happened - rather than following the traditional ordering of them handed down for centuries. As a result, today's reader is now able to read The Little Flowers as a biograpical narrative of the life of St. Francis and the world-transforming movement that he founded.
