Book Sheep Farming for Meat and Wool

Download or read book Sheep Farming for Meat and Wool written by Jane Court and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2010-07-23 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sheep Farming for Meat and Wool contains practical, up-to-date information on sheep production and management for producers throughout temperate Australia. It is based on research and extension projects conducted over many years by the Department of Primary Industries and its predecessors and the University of Melbourne. The book covers business management, pasture growth and management, nutrition and feed management, drought management, reproductive management, disease management, genetic improvement, animal welfare and working dog health. It also gives seasonal reminders for a spring lambing wool-producing flock, for autumn lambing Merino ewes joined to Border Leicester rams, and for winter lambing crossbred ewes joined to terminal sires. It will guide new and established farmers, students of agriculture and service providers with detailed information on the why and how of sheep production, and will assist farmer groups to initiate activities aimed at increasing their efficiency in specific areas of sheep production.

Book Genetic Improvement of U S Dairy Sheep

Download or read book Genetic Improvement of U S Dairy Sheep written by Thomas Wayne Murphy and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of this dissertation deals with the genetic improvement of U.S. dairy sheep by evaluating production records taken on animals housed at the Spooner Agricultural Research Station (ARS), which is operated by the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The first chapter provides a literature review of the various factors to consider when organizing a dairy sheep breeding program focused on genetically improving ewe profitability. In the second chapter, management, biological, seasonal, breed, and heterosis effects were shown to account for phenotypic differences among animals. In the third chapter, these effects are included in models of genetic prediction in order to estimate the genetic and non-genetic parameters of and among lamb and ewe traits and to predict breeding values for individual animals. Results from Chapter 3 show that economically important traits are heritable in varying degrees and there exists both favorable and unfavorable genetic correlations among traits. The fourth chapter utilizes a publicly available program package to model the Spooner ARS flock and to derive the economic value of traits across varying production scenarios and market conditions. When milk is sold on a weight basis, improving milk yield is the most practical breeding objective. However, for producers that also process and sell their own cheese, a breeding objective should consist of both milk yield and component traits. The fifth chapter estimates the impact of inbreeding on ewe lactation performance and applies a simple mating strategy to avoid its accumulation in future progeny. It was found that inbreeding does negatively affect lactation yields and should be avoided whenever possible. The findings from this dissertation set the framework to develop an across-flock genetic evaluation program for U.S. dairy sheep, which would be an invaluable tool for these producers.
