Book The History of Foreign Investment in the United States 1914 1945

Download or read book The History of Foreign Investment in the United States 1914 1945 written by Mira WILKINS and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 1009 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mira Wilkins, the foremost authority on foreign investment in the United States, continues her magisterial history in a work covering the critical years 1914-1945. Wilkins includes all long-term inward foreign investments, both portfolio (by individuals and institutions) and direct (by multinationals), across such enterprises as chemicals and pharmaceuticals, textiles, insurance, banks and mortgage providers, other service sector companies, and mining and oil industries. She traces the complex course of inward investments, presents the experiences of the investors, and examines the political and economic conditions, particularly the range of public policies, that affected foreign investments. She also offers valuable discussions on the intricate cross-investments of inward and outward involvements and the legal precedents that had long-term consequences on foreign investment. At the start of World War I, the United States was a debtor nation. By the end of World War II, it was a creditor nation with the strongest economy in the world. Integrating economic, business, technological, legal, and diplomatic history, this comprehensive study is essential to understanding the internationalization of the American economy, as well as broader global trends.

Book Foreign Direct Investment in the United States

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in the United States written by Edward Montgomery Graham and published by Peterson Institute for International Economics. This book was released on 1995 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The share of the US economy controlled by foreign firms has tripled since the mid-1970s. The authors find that foreign firms appear to invest in the United States mainly to exploit their individual advantages in management and technology - the same reasons why American firms invest abroad - rather than because the United States is now running large deficits and has become a large debtor nation. Foreign-owned firms do not pay lower wages or shift good jobs and research and development away from the United States. Foreign-owned firms and especially Japanese firms do, however, have a marked tendency to import more of their production inputs. The authors warn that the President's new legislative authority to screen FDI on national security grounds could easily be abused, but endorse using this authority to ensure access to critical technologies or production processes including a requirement on some foreign firms to invest in the United States. They propose new international rules to minimize governmental interference and harmonize policies toward multinational firms.

Book Direct Foreign Investment

Download or read book Direct Foreign Investment written by Kyoshi Kojima and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Direct foreign investment and the activities of multinational corporations are new dynamic elements in the international economy. This book identifies, theoretically and practically, a Japanese model of multinational business operations which has characteristics differing from the American or "anti-trade oriented" type, and casts light on important policy implications concerning direct foreign investment and multinational corporations. By developing a macroeconomic approach to direct foreign investment, instead of the prevalent explanation from the viewpoint of business administration and industrial organisation, this study adds to current knowledge of the multinational corporation. It endeavours to bridge the gap of separated treatments between international trade and foreign investment, and presents an integrated theory from the viewpoint of a dynamic reorganisation in the international division of labour. The book also includes two introductory surveys on the survey of international division of labour and foreign investment.

Book A Country is Not a Company

Download or read book A Country is Not a Company written by Paul R. Krugman and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nobel-Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman argues that business leaders need to understand the differences between economic policy on the national and international scale and business strategy on the organizational scale. Economists deal with the closed system of a national economy, whereas executives live in the open-system world of business. Moreover, economists know that an economy must be run on the basis of general principles, but businesspeople are forever in search of the particular brilliant strategy. Krugman's article serves to elucidate the world of economics for businesspeople who are so close to it and yet are continually frustrated by what they see. Book The Extent of Singapore s Investments Abroad

Download or read book The Extent of Singapore s Investments Abroad written by Samuel Bassey Okposin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume explores extreme openness of the Singaporean economy to international trade through the role of Foreign Direct Investment in Singapore and Singapore’s investments abroad. It provides much valuable insight to how changes in the economic and policy environments impacted on the individual Singapore-based firms and their decision making processes. The book is particularly strong in the manner in which the firm level material is linked to the overall outflow of capital, the macro-level conditions and the established theoretical explanations for the export of capital. Samuel Bassey Okposin has four aims: to examine the causes of direct investment in Singapore’s economy, to investigate the motivation for Singapore firms to invest abroad, to explain overseas direct investment from Singapore and to examine Singapore’s overseas direct investment strategies, strengths and weaknesses, considering if the current trend of outward direct investment will continue into the new millennium.
