Book The Economic Viability of a Four metal Pioneer Deep Ocean Mining Venture

Download or read book The Economic Viability of a Four metal Pioneer Deep Ocean Mining Venture written by Benjamin V. Andrews and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pioneer deep ocean mining venture is described. This vertically integrated venture explores, transports and processes manganese nodules into four metals and markets the products. The integrated system is defined, and capital and operating costs are estimated in 1982 U.S . dollars . A basic return-on-investment or payout analysis model is presented and used to evaluate the financial returns of the project. Several alternative cases are investigated. A series of tests is performed to determine the venture's sensitivity to realistic variations of key costs and schedule.

Download or read book Deep Sea Mining written by Rahul Sharma and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-28 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive book contains contributions from specialists who provide a complete status update along with outstanding issues encompassing different topics related to deep-sea mining. Interest in exploration and exploitation of deep-sea minerals is seeing a revival due to diminishing grades and increasing costs of processing of terrestrial minerals as well as availability of several strategic metals in seabed mineral resources; it therefore becomes imperative to take stock of various issues related to deep-sea mining. The authors are experienced scientists and engineers from around the globe developing advanced technologies for mining and metallurgical extraction as well as performing deep sea exploration for several decades. They invite readers to learn about the resource potential of different deep-sea minerals, design considerations and development of mining systems, and the potential environmental impacts of mining in international waters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past century, scientists, world statesmen, and international entrepreneurs have become increasingly aware of the potential of the oceans as a source of minerals. This book provides an authoritative picture of the current state of marine mineral extraction. A major work of reference, it will be essential reading for both those engaged in maritime studies and for professional organisations involved in the extraction of underwater minerals.

Book Deep Seabed Mining in the Indian Ocean Economic and Strategic Dimensions

Download or read book Deep Seabed Mining in the Indian Ocean Economic and Strategic Dimensions written by Commander (Dr) Nitin Agarwala and published by National Maritime Foundation. This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book looks at the need of minerals for humanity, how and what the oceans offer as minerals in general, the technological developments achieved and the insight into future technologies and designs in this field before finally focusing on the mineral wealth of the Indian Ocean. It eventually poses some tough questions that need answers if deep seabed mining is to become a success in the future. In addition, it discusses the efforts of the key players in this field operating in the Indian ocean that has rejuvenated the deep seabed mining both economically and strategically. Since, commercial profitability of marine minerals occurs only if the demand is greater than the supply, at times, the decision gets governed by strategic reasoning. Hence, the book aims to give an idea of the driving forces that guide such decision-making and the development of deep seabed mining.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to examine the actual impact of physical and social engineering projects in more than fifty countries from a multidisciplinary perspective. The book brings together an international team of nearly two hundred authors from over two dozen different countries and more than a dozen different social, environmental, and engineering sciences. Together they document and illustrate with case studies, maps and photographs the scale and impacts of many megaprojects and the importance of studying these projects in historical, contemporary and postmodern perspectives. This pioneering book will stimulate interest in examining a variety of both social and physical engineering projects at local, regional, and global scales and from disciplinary and trans-disciplinary perspectives.

Book Economic Analysis of Deep Seabed Mining Systems

Download or read book Economic Analysis of Deep Seabed Mining Systems written by Allen H. Magnuson and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of several variables affecting the economic performance of proposed manganese nodule mining ventures were evaluated using an improved version of the Texas A&M University's Ocean Mining Payout Analysis Program. After tax Internal Rate of Return (discounted cash flow) was used as the primary criterion of performance along with total funding requirements. Variables studied included ore production rate (throughput), processing plant location, construction period, depletion, corporate structure type, processing plant type and financing. Metal pricing used in the analysis was "normal" 1970's pricing which (with the exception of cobalt) is higher than current metal prices. Overall results show that favorable combinations of the variables can produce after tax rates of return as high as 30 to 35 percent.

Book Environmental Issues of Deep Sea Mining

Download or read book Environmental Issues of Deep Sea Mining written by Rahul Sharma and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses environmental issues associated with deep-sea mining, with an emphasis on potential impacts, their consequences and the policy perspectives. The book describes the methods and technologies to assess, monitor and mitigate mining impacts on marine environments, and also suggests various approaches for environmental management when conducting deep-sea mining. The volume brings together information and data for researchers, contractors, mining companies, regulators, and NGOs working in the field of deep-sea mining. Section 1 highlights the various environmental issues and discusses methods and approaches that can help in developing environmentally sustainable deep-sea mining. Section 2 details the results and outcomes of studies related to impact assessment of deep-sea mining, and proposes methods for monitoring. Section 3 discusses the need and means for developing data standards and their application to deep-sea mining. Section 4 discusses the policies, approaches, and practices related to deep-sea mining, suggests formats for developing environmental impact statements (EIS) and environmental management plans (EMP), and describes national and international regulations for environmental management. Section 5 concludes the text by putting deep-sea economic activities into an environmental context and conducting techno-economic analyses of deep-sea mining and processing.

Book An Economic Analysis of a Pioneer Deep Ocean Mining Venture

Download or read book An Economic Analysis of a Pioneer Deep Ocean Mining Venture written by John E. Flipse and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 3 million ton per year, three metal, vertically integrated, ocean exploration, mining, transportation and ore-processing and metal-marketing system is defined and the capital and operating costs estimated in 1980 U.S . dollars . A basic return-on-investment 11pay-out11 analysis model is presented with several alternate cases investigated. A series of tests is performed to determine the system's sensitivity to realistic variations of key costs and schedule. For a gross investment of almost $1.5 billion, or a fixed capital investment of about $1 billion, an ocean mining system producing nickel, copper and cobalt will yield approximately $415 million in annual revenues, a before-tax profit of about $180 million and an after-tax profit of less than $100 million, providing an unsatisfactory low internal rate of return of approximately seven percent. It is unlikely that ocean mining will be undertaken using the system defined herein at this level of return unless a critical feedstock for a company's major product is produced or a national need for a strategic metal develops . This conclusion is entirely consistent with today's low level of commitment to long-term, capital-intensive natural resource development projects.
