Book Estimation of Average and Incremental Net Economic Values of Oregon Ocean Sport caught Salmon

Download or read book Estimation of Average and Incremental Net Economic Values of Oregon Ocean Sport caught Salmon written by Nik Mustapha bin Raja Abdullah and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this study was to estimate the demand for and value of Oregon ocean sport-caught salmon fishery. The primary technique employed to estimate the recreational demand was an aggregated zone average travel cost method (TCM). The willingness of an angler to pay was deduced from the estimated demand for recreational fishing. The concept of consumers' surplus was used in conjunction with the travel-cost based demand functions to estimate the net economic value of Oregon ocean sport-caught salmon. The net economic value computed for the pooled data from all ten ports was found to be about $6.4 million. This value was calculated based on the total travel cost per mile of one-way distance equal to 72 cents. The regional travel cost method (RTCM) was developed to measure the effects of substitutes and quality variables in the travel cost model. A system of a linear demand equations for the six larger ports was estimated by the seemingly unrelated regression equation (SURE) method. The substitute distances as proxies for substitute prices were found to be insignificant for this model. Likewise, attempts to include substitute distances using indexes constructed by the Principal Component analysis failed to give significant results, with the exception of Garibaldi and Brookings. The total net economic value for the regional travel cost model estimated by SURE was $9.1 million. The incremental value per coho equivalent was also assessed by using the relationship between catch and effort per month by port. The coho equivalent was constructed on the basis of average weights of the commercial salmon catch, which was roughly two coho to one chinook salmon. The weighted average incremental value per coho and chinook was found to be $23.46 and $43.17, respectively. These values were about 50 percent of their respective average values. A total of 66 out of 234 distance zones created had zero values. Tobit analysis was employed to efficiently estimate the recreational demand from this kind of data. From the estimated demand function, a net economic value of about $12.7 million was obtained. This value was higher than those estimated by the SURE method and the OLS in the simple model. It should be noted that all the above value estimates were based upon demand models that were not consistent with the theory of consumer demand. However, a theoretically consistent system of demand equations was estimated and presented in Appendix D. This model fitted the data better than the other models and should give more accurate estimates of consumer surplus.

Book Recreational Fisheries Development Plan

Download or read book Recreational Fisheries Development Plan written by CANADA-NOVA SCOTIA COOPERATION AGREEMENT ON RECREATIONAL FISHERIES. and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, a number of problems have arisen that have resulted in a decline in angler effort in Nova Scotia's recreational fishery. Southern Nova Scotia includes the counties of Queens, Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby. This report outlines the scope of work, the methodology used, a summary of the findings and data collected, and a set of recommendations. The study assembled information from the physical, chemical, and biological conditions upon which the existing and potential angling fisheries of southern N.S. are dependent; reviewed relevant socio-economic information and assessed the socio-economic impacts of proposed management initiatives; and prepared a development plan.

Book Wild Trout IV

Download or read book Wild Trout IV written by Frank Richardson and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first Wild Trout Symposium (1974) was sponsored by Trout Unlimited and the United States Department of the Interior. The second Symposium (1979) added the Federation of Fly Fisherman as a sponsor. Five years later (1984) the U.S. Department of Agriculture - Forest Service joined. In 1989 , the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the American Fisheries Society joined. These symposia began with a concentration on management, then recognized that more than 'management' was required in ongoing efforts to enhance wild salmonid fisheries. Subsequent symposia began to examine a broader range of environmental and social factors influencing wild salmonids. The originators hoped that each symposium would be a building block upon which the succeeding symposium could provide insights and research which future sessions could revisit. Along with the broadening of sponsorship, we have grown , we have gained recognition, and we look forward to expanding our contribution to the cause of wild salmonids. We hope these Proceedings will stimulate readers thinking and efforts on behalf of our wild salmonid resources , and plan to participate with us in Wild Trout V.

Book Fisheries Economics Volume I

Download or read book Fisheries Economics Volume I written by Lee G. Anderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-28 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: This important collection of international research on fisheries economics offers a comprehensive source of contemporary research on key topics in the field, as well as presenting the history of how the economic theory of fisheries exploitation has developed. Bringing into focus a wide range of inquiry, this volume concentrates most particularly on the traditional economic problem of optimal resource allocation. Individual papers examine fundamental issues including, the lack of efficiency of open access and the specification of exactly what dynamic efficiency entails. Fisheries Economics is an invaluable research reference collection for the libraries of academic and other professional economists, as well as an indispensable resource for those studying across the fields of natural resources, fisheries economics and particularly fisheries management.
