Book excerpt: Despite the continuous increase in the number of organic farms and in the areas in which organic methods are used, organic farming remains a niche sector, not only in Poland but also in other European countries. Nevertheless, a form of organic farming can still be attractive for part of farmers, particularly in view of the continuing financial support for this sector. This paper presents the state of organic farming in Poland and the production and economic conditions of agricultural production using the example of major agricultural production activities in organic farms. The results based on Agricultural Products Data Collection System AGROKOSZTY shows that the organic agricultural production is profitable and economically justified. In comparison with conventional production the low level of direct costs in organic production leads very often to higher level of gross margin from particular agricultural activities. The combination of low level of total costs and financial support for organic production gives organic farmers the higher level of income from each studied activity. The production capacity is limited but the production results seems to be not that important in organic farming than the balance between economic results, social conditions and environmental requirements.

Statistics capture them jointly as organic farms.This distorts the real picture of the Polish organic farming, especially the average area of farms, and production and economic situation, which is evidenced by data from organic farms keeping accounting under the Polish FADN. There were considerable differences between the analysed organic and “mixed” farms as regards the cropping structure and livestock population, level of incurred costs and production efficiency, thereby their profitability. Results of the analyses proved that mixed farms were fairly competitive in economic terms against farms using strictly organic production methods, and their income was far less dependent on external support, although the level of subsidies to operating activities per 1 ha of utilised agricultural area was close to the level noted for organic farms.

These policies are based on the perception that large farms offer real economies of scale. But international evidence indicates that such large, mechanized farms are generally less efficient and use less labor than small family farms. The authors analyzed the relationship between farm size and efficiency in Polish agriculture. They used two different methods to do so. First they determined differences in total factor productivity between small and large farms. They then used Data Envelope Analysis to estimate scale efficiencies. The results show that, for the sample of farms analyzed: 1) large farms are not more efficient than smaller farms; and 2) smaller farms are more labor-intensive than larger farms. These results have important policy implications for farm restructuring in Poland and other transition economies facing similar issues and conditions.

The report 2013-2014”, issued by the Main Inspectorate of the Agricultural and Food Quality Inspection, production solely under the organic system was carried out, at that time, by 67% and 60% of organic farms, respectively. The remaining share are entities producing under both organic and conventional methods. According to research, held under the Polish FADN, these farms are highly varied in organisational, production and economic terms. Farms using solely organic methods are distinguished by more holistic approach to executed farming activities, they are also more reliable as regards the quality of manufactured organic food, but they achieve poorer economic results. This is evidenced in the following paper discussing the organisation, production and economic results of such farms grouped according to the size of UAA. Research proved that their production effects over a few years were fairly similar and dropped along with an increase in the area of farms but, at the same time, production intensity dropped. Very poor soil quality also constrained production. The analysis showed that these farms are weak in terms of production and economy, highly dependent on subsidies and rather unlikely to develop in the coming years.

Book excerpt: Organic products markets will be affected by the food crisis, changes in the structure of consumer demand, rising food prices, and the migration of Ukrainians due to Russian aggression. This article aims to identify possible changes in the organic products markets due to the events of 2022 in Eastern Europe. Methodology. The main research methods included analysis and synthesis, comparison, and statistical analysis of organic markets of EE countries (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Ukraine). The analysis was carried out according to the following criteria: key market indicators (land area, producers, exporters, importers, retail sales), development history; institutions; market development indicators, including export and import; standards and legal framework; state support policy. The databases used for the analysis are Eurostat (2022), Research Institute of Organic Agriculture by FiBL (2022), and 2008-2020 data. The results indicate possible changes in the organic products market due to the events of 2022 in Eastern Europe: 1) possible market growth for organic products in the countries with the highest refugee arrivals (Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova) and for Ukraine to overcome the food crisis; 2) a significant increase in prices of organic products due to increased demand for food and food crisis, higher energy costs; 3) market growth in Poland and the Czech Republic as the most developed among the EE countries due to increased demand for products in the importing countries (Germany, Italy, France and Spain); 4) possible reduction of organic food production due to reduced demand due to increased consumption of essential goods; 5) through the active provision of financial assistance to Ukraine to meet nutritional and humanitarian needs, EE countries reduce the financial capacity to support organic producers and their subsidies level.
