Book Panicle Architecture of Rice and its Relationship with Grain Filling

Download or read book Panicle Architecture of Rice and its Relationship with Grain Filling written by Pravat K. Mohapatra and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-24 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows the importance of rice for human consumption. It focuses on the rice panicle, its morphology and characteristics. High genetic diversity of rice has been economically profitable for mankind; the crop provides food calories to half of the human race on earth and because of its adaptability to diversified and unstable ecological conditions, the plant has an asynchronous flowering system in the panicle. The International Rice Research Institute has a collection of panicles with numerous branching phenotypes and lengths varying from 10 to 43 cm. Due to the heterogeneous architecture, grain filling depends on the position of the spikelet within a panicle. Spikelets on apical branches fertilize early and fill faster compared to their basal counterparts and therefore, individual grain weights of panicle vary widely. The discrepancy in grain filling between spikelets changes with panicle architecture but the relationship of variation in individual grain weight with panicle architecture has not been studied. Spikelet number has increased highly in the newly developed rice cultivars, but it has no benefit accrued on grain filling and yield. This book is recommended for students, researchers and teachers working in this field of expertise.

Book The Political Economy of Productivity

Download or read book The Political Economy of Productivity written by David H. Feeny and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic history of Thailand between 1880 and 1975 contrasts sharply with the development experiences of other Third World countries. Between the opening of trade in 1850 and 1941, when war halted economic activity, Thailand became a major exporter of rice in the world market. Although conditions for further growth seemed highly favourable, Thailand's rapid integration into the world economy failed to improve living standards, and rice yields actually declined. In examining the causes of the underdevelopment of Thai agriculture over the last 100 years, Feeny introduces supply and demand models of technical and institutional change to analyse why the rice export boom did not result in more development. This book, much of which is based on primary research in the Thai National Archives, is one of the few quantitative economic histories of a less developed country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Averting Famine on Iraq, My Memories for years of U.N sanction 1990-2003 Washington post March 3, 2003: About Iraqi Food Ration System “The ration program is regarded by the United Nations as the largest and most efficient distribution system of its kind in the world. International experts regard Iraqi program, which feeds more people than any other ration system in the world and is twice the size of WFP program worldwide operations, as the largest and most efficient in the world. The system was operating in weeks and it continued during the Gulf War, making Saleh something of national hero. I don’t think any body could do something better in term of accuracy and timely food distribution to the entire population. It is very impressive. Due said he fears a "catastrophe" if a conflict interferes with food shipments or if a change of government results in distribution being assumed by international aid organizations without participation of Iraqi civil servants. "There's no alternative to the current system," he said. "There's no way we could create something else that would work half as well as theirs."
