Again he wished to secure the good will of the landed interests, so that in case of war he could draw upon them for the means for carrying on the struggle. This proved the case, because when the war did come the landed gentry, without a murmur, paid the land tax of four shillings. From this to the end of his administration, the sinking fund was not only anticipated, but used as security for borrowing money. The fund, though diverted from its original purpose, served to carry England through a period of deficits; and had it not been diverted, there would have been burdensome loans, or taxes which would have caused discontent and dissatisfaction, while nothing would have been gained by new loans and paying debts from the sinking fund. Though the national debts were not paid off as rapidly as expected, the fund prevented new loans from being contracted. We herewith append a statement computed from acts of Parliament of the different sums taken by Walpole from the sinking fund for the services of the government. Book New Perspectives on the History of Political Economy

Download or read book New Perspectives on the History of Political Economy written by Robert Fredona and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a snapshot of the resurgent historiography of political economy in the wake of the ongoing global financial crisis, and suggests fruitful new agendas for research on the political-economic nexus as it has developed in the Western world since the end of the Middle Ages. New Perspectives on the History of Political Economy brings together a select group of young and established scholars from a wide variety of disciplinary backgrounds—history, economics, law, and political science—in an effort to begin a re-conceptualization of the origins and history of political economy through a variety of still largely distinct but complementary historical approaches—legal and intellectual, literary and philosophical, political and economic—and from a variety of related perspectives: debt and state finance, tariffs and tax policy, the encouragement and discouragement of trade, merchant communities and companies, smuggling and illicit trades, mercantile and colonial systems, economic cultures, and the history of economic doctrines more narrowly construed. The first decade of the twenty-first century, bookended by 9/11 and a global financial crisis, witnessed the clamorous and urgent return of both 'the political' and 'the economic' to historiographical debates. It is becoming more important than ever to rethink the historical role of politics (and, indeed, of government) in business, economic production, distribution, and exchange. The artefacts of pre-modern and modern political economy, from the fourteenth through the twentieth centuries, remain monuments of perennial importance for understanding how human beings grappled with and overcame material hardship, organized their political and economic communities, won great wealth and lost it, conquered and were conquered. The present volume, assembling some of the brightest lights in the field, eloquently testifies to the rich and powerful lessons to be had from such a historical understanding of political economy and of power in an economic age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who are the individuals whose novel ideas, writings, and philosophies have influenced economics throughout history—and in doing so, have helped change the world? This encyclopedia provides a readable study of economics by examining the great economists themselves. This book presents biographies of 200 economic thinkers throughout history, supplying a one-stop reference about the men and women whose ideas, writings, and philosophies created the foundation of our current understanding of economics. Depicting their subjects within the contexts of history, development economics, and econometrics, these biographies provide an insightful overview of the world of economics through the economists of significance and the many subdisciplines, topics, eras, and philosophies they represent. Economic Thinkers: A Biographical Encyclopedia begins by describing economic thinkers in ancient Greece and Rome, moves through history to cover economists in the 15th through 19th centuries, and addresses economic theory in the 20th century and the modern era. Written to be easily accessible and highly readable, the work will appeal to students, scholars, general readers, and anyone interested in learning about the historical and philosophical foundation of economics.
