Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Economic History of Ireland in the Eighteenth Century In one sense the eighteenth century is an easy period to treat historically, as the beginning and end of the cen tury were marked by /events which may be truly termed epochs. The seventeenth century did not merge gradually into the eighteenth, nor the eighteenth into the nineteenth. On the contrary, the former two were definitely separated by the Revolution, and the latter two by the Union. The events which marked the years between the Restoration and the beginning of the century were such as to destroy the old condition of things; Irish commerce was successfully attacked; the old popular land system was finally abolished; and the Irish people were reduced to a condition not far removed from slavery. The old economic state had disappeared, and a new one was about to begin. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Economic History of Ireland From the Union to the Famine But particularly in Ireland in the early nineteenth century Owing to the policy adopted towards Irish industry in the eighteenth century the vast majority of the population were thrown on the land for their support and the propor tion of the people thus depending on the soil tended to increase rather than diminish after the Union. Sir Robert Kane estimated in 1844 that the percentage of the population dependent on manufactures was 24, and that dependent on agriculture An occupation which took such a prominent place in the economy of the country is entitled to the first and greatest share of our consideration. Book Contemporary Printed Sources for British and Irish Economic History 1701 1750

Download or read book Contemporary Printed Sources for British and Irish Economic History 1701 1750 written by L. W. Hanson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-28 with total page 1008 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this 1963 volume, Mr Hanson's aim was to record from the principal libraries of Great Britain and Ireland all new works on economic affairs published in the first half of the eighteenth century. The entries are arranged chronologically by years of publication, and the entries for each year are subdivided. A single entry comprises author's name, title, place of publication, date, size, and location. The titles are transcribed fairly fully to avoid ambiguity or confusion. First editions only are given full entries; subsequent editions or reissues are recorded in footnotes. Altogether there are little over 6500 main entries. The comprehensive indexes are an important feature of the book. An index of titles brings the complete material into alphabetical order; and a general index of authors and subjects ensures that the book can be used selectively.

Download or read book Black 47 and Beyond written by Cormac Ó Gráda and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here Ireland's premier economic historian and one of the leading authorities on the Great Irish Famine examines the most lethal natural disaster to strike Europe in the nineteenth century. Between the mid-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, the food source that we still call the Irish potato had allowed the fastest population growth in the whole of Western Europe. As vividly described in Ó Gráda's new work, the advent of the blight phytophthora infestans transformed the potato from an emblem of utility to a symbol of death by starvation. The Irish famine peaked in Black '47, but it brought misery and increased mortality to Ireland for several years. Central to Irish and British history, European demography, the world history of famines, and the story of American immigration, the Great Irish Famine is presented here from a variety of new perspectives. Moving away from the traditional narrative historical approach to the catastrophe, Ó Gráda concentrates instead on fresh insights available through interdisciplinary and comparative methods. He highlights several economic and sociological features of the famine previously neglected in the literature, such as the part played by traders and markets, by medical science, and by migration. Other topics include how the Irish climate, usually hospitable to the potato, exacerbated the failure of the crops in 1845-1847, and the controversial issue of Britain's failure to provide adequate relief to the dying Irish. Ó Gráda also examines the impact on urban Dublin of what was mainly a rural disaster and offers a critical analysis of the famine as represented in folk memory and tradition. The broad scope of this book is matched by its remarkable range of sources, published and archival. The book will be the starting point for all future research into the Irish famine.
