Book excerpt: Ken Drushka analyses the changes in human attitudes towards the forests, detailing the rise of the late nineteenth-century conservation movement and its subsequent decline after World War I, the interplay between industry and government in the development of policy, the adoption of sustained yield policies after World War II, and the recent adoption of sustainable forest management in response to environmental concerns. Book Forests Timber and Trade

Download or read book Forests Timber and Trade written by Thomas Runyan Waggener and published by Orono, Me. : University of Maine Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest products are among the leading traditional resource-based economic contributors in both Canada and the U.S. The dependence of both countries on the U.S. market for wood products has created periods of tension and controversy, with the issues of protectionism and of changing structure and maturing markets of particular significance as the Canadian-U.S. Free Trade Agreement moves toward full implementation. This paper discusses issues in a global context, identifies the national responses to using the forest resource, and discusses public policies. Elements of forest sector policy discussed include consumption, adequacy of raw material supply, employment and income, contribution to the international balance of payments, and environmental values. Institutional differences are identified, as well as the globalization of forest product markets and the Free Trade Agreement, and the estimated effects of the Agreement.

Book Community Forestry in Canada

Download or read book Community Forestry in Canada written by Sara Teitelbaum and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2016-07-28 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, community forestry has taken root across Canada. Locally run initiatives are lauded as welcome alternatives to large corporate and industrial logging practices, yet little research has been done to document their tangible outcomes or draw connections between their ideals of local control, community benefit, ecological stewardship, and economic diversification and the realities of community forestry practice. This book brings together the work of over twenty-five researchers to provide the first comparative and empirically rich portrait of community forestry policy and practice in Canada. Tackling all of the forestry regions from Newfoundland to British Columbia, it unearths the history of community forestry, revealing surprising regional differences linked to patterns of policy-making and cultural traditions. Case studies celebrate innovative practices in governance and ecological management while uncovering challenges related to government support and market access. The future of the sector is also considered, including the role of institutional reform, multiscale networks, and adaptive management strategies.
