Book Bangladesh s Economic and Social Progress

Download or read book Bangladesh s Economic and Social Progress written by Munim Kumar Barai and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book evaluates Bangladesh’s impressive economic and social progress, more often referred to as a ‘development surprise’. In doing so, the book examines the gap in existing explanations of Bangladesh’s development and then offers an empirically informed analysis of a range of distinctive factors, policies, and actions that have individually and collectively contributed to the progress of Bangladesh. In an inclusive way, the book covers the developmental role, relation, and impact of poverty reduction, access to finance, progress in education and social empowerment, reduction in the climatic vulnerability, and evolving sectoral growth activities in the agriculture, garments, and light industries. It also takes into account the important role of the government and NGOs in the development process, identifies bottlenecks and challenges to Bangladesh’s future development path and suggests measures to overcome them. By providing an inclusive narrative to theorize Bangladesh’s development, which is still missing in the public discourse, this book posits that Bangladesh per se can offer a development model to other developing countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: His analysis suggests that certain explanations have not been sufficiently considered in previous works. For example, prior domestic strife can be linked to the escalation of foreign conflict in an impressive number of cases, a discovery which runs counter to the consensus which has emerged over the last two decades among political scientists. Prior research on causes of war has often lacked rigour. James has tried to remedy this through a long-term, comparative approach to the subject matter. While Crisis and War follows the tradition of aggregate research, statistical analysis is always connected to particular events through discussions of situations and leaders in both diplomatic history and contemporary world politics. James' comprehensive and original approach to past theories both clarifies and critiques them.

Book Technology and Transition

Download or read book Technology and Transition written by Abdelkader Djeflat and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Maghreb countries had a promising start in economic growth after independence. For the most part they thrived on industrialisation by import substitution; but unfortunately this strategy left them with macroeconomic and structural imbalances which together have effectively constrained their ability to compete in the world economic system and to catch up with the rapidly changing global techno-economic circumstances. Issues relating to aspects of technology transfer to the Maghreb, strategies for technological and resource development and the integration of education and R&D systems with the productive systems of the economies in the region are discussed along with relevant cases from Mexico, China, South Korea, India and Bangladesh.

Book Foreign Aid and Bangladesh

Download or read book Foreign Aid and Bangladesh written by Mohammad Mizanur Rahman and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-12 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign Aid and Bangladesh offers a rich combination of aid history – from the evolution of aid as a global agenda after WWII to the rise of different multilateral, bilateral, and emerging donors and their policy shifts – and a nuanced perspective of aid partnerships at the country level. Drawing on first-hand experiences and insights, the author deeply investigates the realities of a longstanding aid recipient, Bangladesh, and argues that without a political economy approach, one cannot understand the realpolitik of development aid. As an emerging economy from the global south, Bangladesh has been a longstanding partner and recipient of international aid since 1971. Bangladesh has also been active in the global discussions leading to redefining the new narrative and arguments for the new aid regime since the beginning of this century. Building on the analysis of Bangladesh's aid relations, the book shows that there has not been any qualitative shift in aid behavior in the new aid regime that set new norms after the end of the Cold War to ensure recipients' ownership and welcomed an expanding aid landscape by integrating emerging economies from the Global South for achieving better development results. The book analyzes the role of different actors in the development partnership, both traditional and emerging donors - such as China and India, and their partnership practices. It examines different forms of aid and their changing perspective, particularly technical assistance. Based on more than two decades of research and profound insider observations, the book debunks the myth that Southern providers could be more benign to their partners. The arguments placed in the book expose that there is no difference between traditional and emerging donors in ensuring donors' business and strategic interests. While donors continue to ensure their interests in providing aid, the Realpolitik of the situation in the recipient country shows that there is a specific economic and political agenda in pursuing aid. Presenting a comprehensive picture of Bangladesh's aid partnership, through the lens of new development partnership principles and narratives of development aid, this book will be of interest to scholars and researchers of aid and development studies and political science as well as South Asian Studies. Donor officials, civil servants, and national and international policy communities will also benefit from this book.

Book Bangladesh s Road to Long term Economic Prosperity

Download or read book Bangladesh s Road to Long term Economic Prosperity written by M. G. Quibria and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A must read for anyone interested in understanding complexities of development process.”–Fakhruddin Ahmed, former Governor of the Central Bank of Bangladesh “Policy makers and general readers including specialists would find this lucid analysis very useful.”– Nurul Islam, Deputy Chairman of the First Planning commission of Bangladesh “The author provides both valuable caution and useful guides to everyone interested in Bangladesh’s economic future.”– Salim Rashid, Emeritus Professor of Economics, University of Illinois, USA This book examines the recent emergence of Bangladesh as one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Identified by Goldman Sachs as being on a meteoric economic rise, the country has dwarfed India in social improvement also. Attempting to build on these successes, the Bangladeshi government has set the ambitious aim of attaining the status of fully developed country by 2041. This study identifies the trifecta of major risks which could derail Bangladesh’s upwards trajectory: the rapid development of robotics and artificial development, the uncertain political and economic global landscape, and the constant threat of climate change and natural disasters. In order to stay on track, the government will need to address various social, political, policy and institutional challenges facing the economy, including poor governance, inadequate physical infrastructure, skill and educational bottlenecks, demographic burden, dwindling social capital and lack of transformational leadership.

Book The Economic Development of South Asia

Download or read book The Economic Development of South Asia written by Prema-chandra Athukorala and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This hefty three-volume reference presents 94 previously published articles and extracts relevant to the economic development of the five major economies in South Asia: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. The editor provides a 12-page introduction explaining the selection process, which was aimed toward balanced subject and country coverage, but wound up with an "India" bias because of the abundance of material on that most populous and most studied country. Also the bulk of papers are country-specific, because there is a dearth of material presenting regional and intra-regional perspectives. Papers are arranged in themed sections, the first volume dealing with economic conditions at the time of independence, and subsequent evolution of economic development, policy, and the underlying political economy. Volume II covers agriculture and the rural economy, industrialization, and finance; the third volume deals with the external dimension of development, population dynamics, human resource development, and poverty and income distribution. Indexing in each volume is by contributor name only. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
