Book The Ecology of the Arctic Char and the Dolly Varden in the Becharof Lake Drainage Alaska

Download or read book The Ecology of the Arctic Char and the Dolly Varden in the Becharof Lake Drainage Alaska written by Brendan P. Scanlon and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Becharof Lake is home to both Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) and the closely related Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma), two species known not only to be similar in appearance but also to exhibit similar life histories. The body morphometry, otolith microchemistry, and stomach contents of both species were studied in fish collected from May to September 1998. Morphometric and meristic analysis revealed clear separation in body structure between the two species, as well as potential sub-populations within each species. Otolith microchemistry revealed incidences of anadromy and non-anadromy in both species. Stomach content analysis revealed a broad feeding niche but smaller ranges in food types in individual Arctic char with little seasonal preference, whereas Dolly Varden showed seasonality in food choices. Data suggest that both species can move in and out of the lake system, and that little competition for food or habitat occurs between the two species in the summer months"--Leaf iii.

Book The Salvelinus The Sockeye and the Egg Sucking Leech

Download or read book The Salvelinus The Sockeye and the Egg Sucking Leech written by Matthew Dickerson and published by Wings Press. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Salvelinus, the Sockeye, and the Egg-Sucking Leech: Abundance and Diversity in the Bristol Bay Drainage (from the Eyes of an Angler) is the fourth book in Matthew Dickerson' s Heartstreams series, published by Wings Press. This exciting ramble among the remote and beautiful mountains, lakes, and rivers of around Alaska' s Bristol Bay is full of encounters with bears, caribou, and other wildlife. But the heart of the book is Dickerson' s exploration of native trout, river ecology, and the joys of experiencing wild places and fish by casting flies among them. This volume focuses on rivers and lakes in Alaska' s Bristol Bay drainage, and on the native fish that inhabit those waters, from the abundant sockeye salmon species to the Salvelinus genus, which includes the stunningly beautiful Dolly Varden char as well as its cousin the Arctic char, the northernmost freshwater fish species in the world. Although the book explores some of the environmental threats facing these waters, the stories are also full of hope, delight, and awe. Though not a science text, it is well-informed by science as well as by the author' s careful eye. The book also includes photographs from Alaskan bush pilot and lodge owner Glen Alsworth Jr., who has lived his whole life in a small village in the middle of a national park in the Bristol Bay drainage. This volume concludes the Wings Press Heartstreams series, in which Dickerson has used fly-fishing expeditions to study the ecological health of trout and their streams from the Northeast to Apalachia to the Desert Southwest to the northern Rockies to Alaska.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The limnological study of Toolik Lake began in the Summer of 1975. This research was an outgrowth of the arctic IBP project which had focused mainly on small Arctic pond ecosystems on the Alaskan Arctic coastal plain. It was thought desirable to study larger, deeper lakes which contained fish to further generalizations developed during the IBP study. Initial research on Toolik Lake and the surrounding lakes and ponds focused on process studies such as annual primary productivity of the lake or the vertical migration patterns of the resident zooplankton. In 1983 the philosophy of the research changed with the funding of a more integrated programme. The fundamental question posed was whether Arctic lake and stream ecosystems are regulated from the bottom up by nutrient availability or from the top down by the density and activity of top predators. In 1987 the Toolik Lake area was designated an LTER (Long-Term Ecological Research) site, one of 18 such sites throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and the Antarctic. The research theme for the Arctic LTER also focuses on the regulation of Arctic ecosystems, whether regulation comes from the top down or bottom up. The Arctic LTER also incorporates a terrestrial component as well as a lake and stream component.

Book Diversity in Migration Habitat Use and Growth of Dolly Varden Char in Chignik Lakes Alaska

Download or read book Diversity in Migration Habitat Use and Growth of Dolly Varden Char in Chignik Lakes Alaska written by Morgan Howard Bond and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma) are a facultatively anadromous salmonid common around much of the north Pacific Rim, but little is known of the factors that determine their migration and life-history patterns. In the Chignik Lakes system on the Alaska Peninsula, Dolly Varden are the only large bodied resident fish species and use nearly all available aquatic habitats at different life stages. In addition, they are often the numerical dominant fish in both freshwater and estuarine habitats. I employed a multifaceted approach to understand variation in Dolly Varden migration timing, growth, habitat use, and variation in anadromy. By integrating daily counts of Dolly Varden ascending rivers and streams throughout the migratory range over a wide temporal scale, I determined upstream migration generally occurs earlier in southern stream and later in northern streams. Interannual variation in ascent timing in southern streams is correlated with sea-surface temperatures, while in northern streams it was not. Plasma insulin-like growth factor 1 concentrations indicate rapid summer growth in estuarine waters compared to freshwater lake habitats. However, the growth benefits of discrete sub-regions of the estuary vary by month. Muscle tissue stable isotope analyses of carbon and nitrogen indicate non-overlapping isotopic signatures of Dolly Varden captured at each estuary sub-region. Therefore there is behavioral spatial separation among estuarine Dolly Varden despite broadly similar body size and diet across the estuarine habitat. Finally, I employed otolith microchemistry (Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca) to evaluate the lifetime migratory history of 366 Dolly Varden captured throughout the watershed. Nearly all Dolly Varden migrate to sea at least once in their life, with most doing so at age four. However, after age four migration rates decline, to near zero by age seven. Fully resident individuals exist within marine-accessible portions of the watershed, and comprise almost 15% of fish over age six. These data demonstrate that Dolly Varden exhibit wide diversity in movement behavior among and within watersheds. These patterns change with ontogeny, and are likely shaped by the size-specific costs and benefits of alternative habitat use and resource availability. Analogous dynamics likely drive life-history diversity in many iteroparous, facultatively anadromous species.

Book Growth and Energetic Condition of Dolly Varden Char in Coastal Arctic Waters

Download or read book Growth and Energetic Condition of Dolly Varden Char in Coastal Arctic Waters written by Jason T Stolarski and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dolly Varden char Salvelinus malma are a dominant member of the nearshore Arctic icthyofauna and support one of the largest subsistence fisheries within Arctic coastal communities in Alaska. Despite this importance, numerous aspects of Dolly Varden ecology remain poorly understood, which inhibits efforts to assess the biological consequences of anthropogenic disturbances such as hydrocarbon extraction and climate change within nearshore areas. The goal of this research was to develop and apply new techniques to measure and assess the biological integrity of Dolly Varden populations. To do so, I evaluated the precision of age determination generated from scales, otoliths, and fin rays, developed and validated bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) models capable of predicting non-lethal estimates of Dolly Varden proximate content, calculated and correlated retrospective estimates of Dolly Varden growth from archived otolith samples to broad-scale environmental variables, and investigated trends in whole body and tissue proximate content among years and demographics (i.e. reproductive versus non-reproductive individuals). Dolly Varden age determinations can be produced non-lethally using scales for fish up to age 5, while otoliths should be used for fish age 6 and greater. Multi-surface BIA models produced estimates of whole body proximate content with high precision. Retrospective growth analyses indicated growth increased significantly during the early 1980s, and was positively correlated to air temperature, sea surface temperature, and discharge and negatively correlated to ice concentration. Analyses of proximate content suggested that non-reproductive fish contained greater lipid concentrations than reproductive fish. Growth and condition analyses suggest that these metrics vary among years and are a function of reproductive cycles and environmental variability operating at multiple temporal and spatial scales. The adoption of scale-based aging and BIA technology will increase the precision of age-based biological statistics and aid in the detection of change within future Dolly Varden research and monitoring.
