Book Eelgrass Zostera Marina L Restoration in the Pacific Northwest

Download or read book Eelgrass Zostera Marina L Restoration in the Pacific Northwest written by Ronald M. Thom and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We summarize eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) restoration and mitigation project results and recommendations of transplant practitioners in the Pacific Northwest since 1990. Our purpose is to provide current information for programs considering eelgrass restoration by providing a synthesis of what practitioners and researchers have learned through experimentation and monitoring of discrete projects throughout western Washington and British Columbia. Reports, papers, personal communications, and a workshop were used to gather data on these projects. Our general null hypothesis is that eelgrass can be restored to match natural eelgrass meadows in terms of structure and function. We conclude that, under favorable site conditions, and if the reason for the initial loss of eelgrass is understood and corrected, that eelgrass can be restored. However, eelgrass restoration science is hampered by knowledge gaps, reducing restoration success. For example, mechanisms for recent eelgrass loss in the region are not obvious, which suggests that the scientific understanding of eelgrass biology and ecosystem conditions is inadequate to support environmental management actions in our region. To improve restoration project success in the Pacific Northwest requires further research knowledge gaps, closely evaluating the performance of restoration projects, and disseminating information for use by future generations. Workshop participants identified an immediate need to construct a clearinghouse of eelgrass restoration and monitoring results that provides summaries and data from eelgrass enhancement efforts. Furthermore, we found that it was difficult to summarize the relative performance of the more than 30 projects reviewed because of variations in goals, project size, planting methods employed, performance criteria, duration of monitoring, intensity of monitoring, and data interpretation. Hence, we recommend that standard monitoring protocols be developed and results from .these methods be reported through the clearinghouse and periodic meetings.

Download or read book Explore the Eelgrass Meadow with Sam and Crystal written by Gloria Snively and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With beautiful, scientifically accurate illustrations, this fascinating story teaches children about the many fish, crustaceans, marine mammals, and micro-organisms that live in and feed off the eelgrass meadows of the north Pacific coastal region. "Recommended for school and public libraries regardless of their proximity to the west coast. Although works of fiction, the books contain a wealth of accessible facts."--Resource Links "A major theme that emerges is the need to respect and care for the ocean environment and to understand the harmony among its inhabitants. These appealing, fact-rich books go a long way to enhancing that understanding for young readers. Highly recommended."--CM: Canadian Review of Materials Sam and Crystal's coastal adventure continues as brother and sister dive deeper--literally--into the marine habitats of Eagle Cove, home of Aunt Kate and Uncle Charlie. In their third adventure, the kids learn about one of the most ecologically important ecosystems on the west coast: the eelgrass meadow. This rich habitat provides food and shelter to countless marine critters--from tiny micro-organisms to juvenile fish, and is the basis of a gigantic food web that supports herring, salmon, black bears, humpback whales and many other species. Ada, an Indigenous woman from nearby Salmon Bay Village, tells the children about her people's knowledge of land and sea, complementing Aunt Kate's Western scientific teachings and reinforcing the importance of respecting nature. Combining an entertaining story with gorgeous imagery and the author's scientific background and extensive work with Indigenous Elders and educators, Explore the Eelgrass Meadow with Sam and Crystalbrings the coastline to life for children ages eight and up.

Book Analysis of Eelgrass in Padilla Bay Washington Using an Uncrewed Aerial System

Download or read book Analysis of Eelgrass in Padilla Bay Washington Using an Uncrewed Aerial System written by Hannah Hein and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eelgrass is an important part of coastal environments in the Pacific Northwest as it provides crucial habitat and moderates storm surge. Padilla Bay, Washington is home to one of the largest eelgrass meadows in North America and contains the native Zostera marina and the non-native Z. japonica. The relationship between these two species is of interest due to the influx of Z. japonica in previously unvegetated areas. I used an uncrewed aerial system (UAS) and a multispectral camera to study species dynamics. I compared the ability of values derived from the band data, two vegetation indices, and a principal components analysis (PCA) to predict eelgrass cover using pixel- and object-based methods. In the pixel-based analysis, using a red and red edge band in a multiple linear regression was the best way to estimate overall percent cover for the full season (R2 = 0.79). Regressions used to predict Z. marina (R2=0.55) and Z. japonica (R2=0.32) cover individually performed poorly. In the object-based analysis, using band means and standard deviations in a support vector machine (SVM) classification resulted in an overall accuracy of 78.3%. This method performed the best at classifying segments based on dominant species, with user's accuracies for Z. marina and Z. japonica of 80% and 100%, respectively. PCA-informed segmentation and classification also performed well, with an overall accuracy of 70.6%. Conducting object-based image segmentation with the Micasense Dual Camera System and SVM classification may be a promising method for identifying spectral differences between Z. marina and Z. japonica.

Book Shellfish Mariculture in Drakes Estero Point Reyes National Seashore California

Download or read book Shellfish Mariculture in Drakes Estero Point Reyes National Seashore California written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-08-17 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Drakes Estero, which lies within the Point Reyes National Seashore (PRNS) about 25 miles northwest of San Francisco, California, was designated by Congress in 1976 as Potential Wilderness, it contained a commercial shellfish mariculture operation. Oyster mariculture began in Drakes Estero with the introduction of the nonnative Pacific oyster in 1932, and has been conducted continuously from that date forward. Hence, the cultural history of oyster farming predates the designation of Point Reyes as a National Seashore in 1962. Nevertheless, with the approach of the 2012 expiration date of the current National Park Service (NPS) Reservation of Use and Occupancy (RUO) and Special Use Permit (SUP) that allows Drakes Bay Oyster Company (DBOC) to operate within the estero, NPS has expressed concern over the scope and intensity of impacts of the shellfish culture operations on the estero's ecosystem. Public debate over whether scientific information justifies closing the oyster farm led to the request for this study to help clarify the scientific issues raised with regard to the shellfish mariculture activities in Drakes Estero.

Download or read book Conservation Biology written by Peggy L. Fiedler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Refecting what a new generation of conservation biologists is doing and thinking, this vital and far ranging second edition explores where conservation biology is heading. It challenges many conventions of conservation biology by exposing certain weaknesses of widely accepted principles. Combining contributions from both the school and the new breed of conservation biologists, this insightful text focuses primarily on topics the are integral to the daily activities of conservation biologists. Several chapters address ecosystem restoration and biotic invasions as well as the the mechanics of population viability analyses, which are now a routine facet of conservation efforts. A case history approach is implemented throughout the book, with the use of practical real-world examples. Furthermore, an in-depth look at quantitative analyses is presented, allowing for models and mathematical analyses to pinpoint limitations in existing data and guide research toward those aspects of biology that are most likely to be critical to the dynamics of a species or an ecosystem.

Book Ecosystem Concepts for Sustainable Bivalve Mariculture

Download or read book Ecosystem Concepts for Sustainable Bivalve Mariculture written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-03-18 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. mariculture production of bivalve molluscs-those cultivated in the marine environment-has roughly doubled over the last 25 years. Although mariculture operations may expand the production of seafood without additional exploitation of wild populations, they still depend upon and affect natural ecosystems and ecosystem services. Every additional animal has an incremental effect arising from food extraction and waste excretion. Increasing domestic seafood production in the United States in an environmentally and socially responsible way will likely require the use of policy tools, such as best management practices (BMPs) and performance standards. BMPs represent one approach to protecting against undesirable consequences of mariculture. An alternative approach to voluntary or mandatory BMPs is the establishment of performance standards for mariculture. Variability in environmental conditions makes it difficult to develop BMPs that are sufficiently flexible and adaptable to protect ecosystem integrity across a broad range of locations and conditions. An alternative that measures performance in sustaining key indicators of ecosystem state and function may be more effective. Because BMPs address mariculture methods rather than monitoring actual ecosystem responses, they do not guarantee that detrimental ecosystem impacts will be controlled or that unacceptable impact will be avoided. Ecosystem Concepts for Sustainable Bivalve Mariculture finds that while performance standards can be applied for some broad ecosystem indicators, BMPs may be more appropriate for addressing parameters that change from site to site, such as the species being cultured, different culture methods, and various environmental conditions. This book takes an in-depth look at the environmental, social, and economic issues to present recommendations for sustainable bivalve mariculture.
