Book Bryophyte Ecology

Download or read book Bryophyte Ecology written by Anthony John Edwin Smith and published by Springer. This book was released on 1982-08-19 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been an increasing interest in bryophyte ecology over the past 100 or so years, initially of a phytosociological nature but, additionally, in recent years, of an experimental nature as well. Early studies of bryophyte communities have led to detailed investigations into the relationships between the plants and their environment. Ecological papers, the large number of which is evidenced by the length of the bibliographies in the subsequent chapters, have appeared in numerous journals. Yet, apart from review chapters, by H. Gams and P. W. Richards in Manual of Bryology, edited b:; H. Verdoorn in 1932 and chapters in E. V. Watson's Structure and Life of Bryophytes, Prem Puri's Bryophytes - A Broad Perspective and D. H. S. Richardson's The Biology of Mosses, published in 1972,1973 and 1981 respectively, no general accounts of bryophyte ecology have been published. Although the Bryophyta is a relatively small division of plants, with between 14000 and 21000 species the interest that they have aroused is out of all proportion to the size either of the plants or of the division. It is evident, however, that despite their relative insigni ficance they play an important ecological role, especially in extreme environments and, in the case of bryophytes in tropical cloud forests and of Sphagnum, may even be a dominant factor in the ecology of the area concerned.

Book Multifunctional Agriculture

Download or read book Multifunctional Agriculture written by Roger Leakey and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-04-14 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world increasingly challenged by the need to integrate and understand highly specialized knowledge in a multidisciplinary way, this book is innovative and perhaps unique in addressing this challenge. It focuses on ideas, strategies, techniques and practices spanning many disciplines at the interface of agriculture with: forestry, horticulture, plant physiology, genetics, ecology, soil science, food science, economics, and the social and environmental sciences as delivered by intensified and enriched agroforestry. Multifunctional Agriculture addresses this complexity, using case studies and insights from the needs of African farmers whose livelihoods are constrained by complex interactions between social, environmental and economic factors and problems underlying agricultural sustainability in Africa. This book, therefore, provides an important resource for those trying to understand the role of agriculture in the achievement of the new Sustainable Development Goals by providing easily implementable, practical and effective methodologies and practices. Provides a single-source, comprehensive insight into agroforestry/ multifunctional agriculture, it's potential, challenges, and progress Helps readers understand and assess potential opportunity through implementation Includes case studies and real-world insights that address common situations and the practical application of best practices Explores the role of multi-functional agriculture in mitigating climate change impacts, providing value-story beyond crop production

Book Indicator Plants Using Plants to Evaluate the Environment

Download or read book Indicator Plants Using Plants to Evaluate the Environment written by Paul L. Smith and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The guide looks at how plants may be used to 'read the environment', essentially treating them as indicators of the state of the habitat where they are found. It was written with three sets of people in mind: 1. Junior ecological consultants who want to improve their Phase 1 Habitat Surveys with botanical target notes useful in ecological assessment. 2. Students of ecology who need to use plants to interpret the landscape around them and understand habitats in greater detail. 3. Amateur naturalists and walkers who seek to enrich their experience of the countryside through a knowledge of plants. Compiled from a range of published sources and from the author's personal experience, it is intended for use primarily in the lowland English countryside.
