Book The Ecological and Evolutionary Consequences of Maternal Nest site Selection for the Embryos and Hatchlings of the Common Snapping Turtle Chelydra Serpentina

Download or read book The Ecological and Evolutionary Consequences of Maternal Nest site Selection for the Embryos and Hatchlings of the Common Snapping Turtle Chelydra Serpentina written by Jason Jon Kolbe and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study illustrates the importance of both direct and indirect effects of maternal nest-site selection behavior for offspring survival, behavior, and phenotypes. Variation in nest-site selection behavior has the potential to be an important maternal effect because of its impact on offspring phenotypes in addition to the direct effect on nest predation. Additionally, this study emphasizes the importance of understanding habitat use during crucial life-history events and potential for human disturbance to modify offspring phenotypes despite adaptive nesting behavior.

Book Reptilian Incubation

Download or read book Reptilian Incubation written by Denis Charles Deeming and published by . This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reptiles have been a topic for scientific study for many decades and remain widely studied around the world. In particular, their reproductive patterns and strategies have been extensively studied, proving useful in analysis of life-history strategies. A pivotal aspect of reptilian reproduction is incubation of eggs. Oviparity is found in all turtles, crocodilians and the tuatara and is prevalent in many lizards and snakes. Many aspects of the eggs, embryos and incubation conditions have been the subject of numerous scientific reports. This volume is dedicated to systematic analysis of reptilian incubation. The concept for the book is to look at reptilian eggs, development and incubation conditions in a functional way with particular emphasis on the natural incubation environment and, rather than concentrating on Family accounts, (e.g. incubation in crocodilians) the chapters review the topics in all reptile types allowing for the first time a systematic comparison of incubation between crocodilians, turtles and squamates. In addition to reviewing current information, the authors briefly look towards the future and outline areas where further research is needed.

  • Pages : 695 pages

Download or read book Ecology written by Charles J. Krebs and published by Benjamin-Cummings Publishing Company. This book was released on 2001 with total page 695 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This best-selling majors ecology book continues to present ecology as a series of problems for readers to critically analyze. No other text presents analytical, quantitative, and statistical ecological information in an equally accessible style. Reflecting the way ecologists actually practice, the book emphasizes the role of experiments in testing ecological ideas and discusses many contemporary and controversial problems related to distribution and abundance. Throughout the book, Krebs thoroughly explains the application of mathematical concepts in ecology while reinforcing these concepts with research references, examples, and interesting end-of-chapter review questions. Thoroughly updated with new examples and references, the book now features a new full-color design and is accompanied by an art CD-ROM for instructors. The field package also includes The Ecology Action Guide, a guide that encourages readers to be environmentally responsible citizens, and a subscription to The Ecology Place (www.ecologyplace.com), a web site and CD-ROM that enables users to become virtual field ecologists by performing experiments such as estimating the number of mice on an imaginary island or restoring prairie land in Iowa. For college instructors and students.

Book Patterns and Consequences of Individual Variation in the Nest site Preferences of Two Species of Sea Turtle

Download or read book Patterns and Consequences of Individual Variation in the Nest site Preferences of Two Species of Sea Turtle written by Stephanie Jill Kamel and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maternal behaviours, such as nest-site choice, can be major determinants of offspring phenotype and fitness. In egg-laying species, incubation environment can influence offspring body size, performance, survival and sex. This thesis focuses on variation among females in maternal nest-site choice and the consequences that this variation can have for offspring survival and performance. I investigated nest-site selection in leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) and hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) sea turtles at three levels: (i) in two species of sea turtle nesting in different environments, (ii) within populations of the same species and (iii) within individual females both within and across nesting seasons. In both species, evidence was found for individual-level nest-site preferences. This was an unexpected result for leatherbacks, as it had long been assumed that females placed their nests randomly due to the unpredictability of their environment. Results were more striking in hawksbills, with individuals exhibiting remarkably high repeatability for nest-site microhabitat characteristics, both within and across nesting seasons. Some females preferred nesting in the forest, some in the forest edge and others still in open areas. With a few exceptions, hatching success and sea-finding ability were similar in all beach microhabitats. This raises the question of what, if not differential offspring survival, is maintaining these preferences. Frequency-dependent selection, wherein females gain a fitness advantage by producing the rare sex, is one possibility. This idea gains some support from the finding that beach temperatures varied dramatically by microhabitat: nests laid in the forest were exposed to male-producing temperatures while those in less vegetated areas were warmer and more female producing. A related aspect of this work has been to consider the conservation implications of nest-site choice. Using seasonal beach temperatures and the distribution of hawksbill nests, I estimated a balanced primary sex ratio, a situation that is likely to change if the current rates of island deforestation in the Caribbean continue. It also appears that Guadeloupe hosts one of the largest hawksbill populations in this region, indicating that data from this nesting beach are critical for developing a more robust demographic picture of Caribbean hawksbills.

Book Snakes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen J. Mullin
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2011-08-15
  • ISBN : 0801457858

Download or read book Snakes written by Stephen J. Mullin and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-15 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Destruction of habitat due to urban sprawl, pollution, and deforestation has caused population declines or even extinction of many of the world's approximately 2,600 snake species. Furthermore, misconceptions about snakes have made them among the most persecuted of all animals, despite the fact that less than a quarter of all species are venomous and most species are beneficial because they control rodent pests. It has become increasingly urgent, therefore, to develop viable conservation strategies for snakes and to investigate their importance as monitors of ecosystem health and indicators of habitat sustainability. In the first book on snakes written with a focus on conservation, editors Stephen J. Mullin and Richard A. Seigel bring together leading herpetologists to review and synthesize the ecology, conservation, and management of snakes worldwide. These experts report on advances in current research and summarize the primary literature, presenting the most important concepts and techniques in snake ecology and conservation. The common thread of conservation unites the twelve chapters, each of which addresses a major subdiscipline within snake ecology. Applied topics such as methods and modeling and strategies such as captive rearing and translocation are also covered. Each chapter provides an essential framework and indicates specific directions for future research, making this a critical reference for anyone interested in vertebrate conservation generally or for anyone implementing conservation and management policies concerning snake populations.
