Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclectic Review, Vol. 4: MDCCCXXXVIII; July-December Art. I. Lectures on the Establishment and Extension of National Churches. Delivered in London, from April 25th to May 12, 1838. By Thomas Chalmers, D.D., and LL.D., Professor of Theology in the University of Edinburgh, &c. 8vo. Glasgow: Collins. 1838. The gentlemen who call themselves 'The Christian Influence Society, ' at whose request these Lectures were undertaken, and are now published, must, we think, feel not a little chagrin and disappointment at the abortive result of their exertions. Not only have they failed of their main object, which was to forward the Scottish Church-extension scheme by bringing up from the North its author and champion to enlighten the polite world upon the question, and thereby to influence the decision of Government; but they have exposed to closer observation the weakness of the cause which Dr. Chalmers has been put forward to advocate. The grounds upon which the Lecturer rests his vindication of Establishments, are so paradoxical as to bring the soundness of his judgment into question even with his own party; and his concessions to the Voluntaries and the Dissenters must have been far more displeasing to the high-church portion of his auditors, than his arguments were acceptable. We are much mistaken, if the reputation of Dr. Chalmers in the metropolis did not stand much higher before he delivered these Lectures, than it has since their publication. The political purpose which the Lectures were obviously intended to promote, was not indeed avowed. The Times newspaper, in an elaborate announcement of the intended course, affirmed distinctly, that they would not 'involve in the slightest degree a spirit of political partizanship, or any reflections on the policy of Government in regard to Church Extension.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclectic Review, 1852, Vol. 4: July December Nor could any other result have been expected. Assuming the duration of such a government as a fact, nothing could have happened but what has actually taken place. There was no cars for the cultivation of the people - these are the very words of F arini - no anxiety for the public prosperity. Rome was a cess-pool of corruption, of exemptions, and of privileges; a clergy made up of fools and knaves, in power; the laity slaves, the treasury plundered by gangs of tax-farmers and spies; all the business of government consisted in prying into and punishing the notions, the expectations, and the imprudences of the liberals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclectic Review, Vol. 4: July December, 1858; New Series It was something, however, to see that first day, the spot revisited where many an English pilgrim, entle or sim le, had knelt leaning on his trust staff, cut in eedwood or t s New Forest; where many a nob 0 student from Bologna or Padua had prayed in form papers), as he was lodged and fed, when, before returning home, he came to visit the tomb of the Apostles; and still more, where man and many a student, like those now gathered there, had sobhe his farewell to the happy spring days and the quiet home of youth, before starting on is wear-y journey to the peril of evil days in his native land. Around lay scattered memorials of the past. One splendid monument, erected to Sir Thomas Dereham, at the bottom of the church, was entirely walled up and roofed over, and so invisible.' But shattered and defaced la the richly-efligied tombs of an archbishop of York and a prior of orcester, and of many other English worthies; while sadder wreckage of the recent storm was piled on one side - the skulls and bones of, perhaps, Cardinal Allen, F. Persons, and others, whose coffins had been dragged u from the vaults below, and converted into munitions of war. And there was required a living link between the resent and the past, between the yonn generation that stood at t 0 door and the old one that had passed into the cry t of the venerable church, there it was, in the sreou of the more t octo gaharian porter, Vincenzo, who stood salutation from the w ging appendage to his grey head to the large silver buckles on his s oes, mumbling toothless welcomes in a yet almost unknown tongue, but full of humble joy and almost patriarchal afl'ection, on seeing the haunts of his own youth repeopled.
