Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclectic Review, 1910, Vol. 13 In making a diagnosis which will serve as a foundation for a rational treatment, it will not do to disregard the fact that most adults, like children, are too ignorant of disease to give us intelligent aid. We must, therefore, be careful in our examinations, and thus reach conclusions from what we have ascertained by means of an educated use of our senses. By these remarks it is not meant that we should entirely dis regard the advantage of such information as we can get from patients and nurses, for there are some things the patient or friends will know, and a little thought will enable us to form questions so as to get the real facts. But there are many things that neither can know anything about with any certainty, and these should always be avoided. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclectic Review, Vol. 13: January June, 1843 It is plain, then, that Dr. Todd has put forth a statement in this case, in respect to a matter of fact, which proves to be the contrary of fact. How are we to account for this? Is it to be ascribed to ignorance? Not to ignorance assuredly. Dr. Todd is a fellow of Trinity College, Dublin; he is a person whose tastes dispose him to black letter studies; and during the last seven years, the Wycliffe mss. In Dublin have been an object of particular attention with him. The result has been a series of papers, which have appeared from time to time in the British Magazine, ' in which the writer has appeared to find his great and constant pleasure in endeavouring to depreciate the ill-paid labours, and hardly earned reputation of Dr. Vaughan, as author of' The Life and Opinions of Wycliffe.' One of these papers relates to the contents of this very volume, and the burden of it is a censure of Dr. Vaughan, either on account of what he has said concerning the volume, or on account of what he has failed to say concerning it. Ignorance, therefore, is out of the question. Shall we, then, say that Dr. Todd has put forth a statement as being fact, which he must have known at the time to have been the contrary of fact? That would be a grave charge to prefer against the fellow of a college, the treasurer of St. Patrick's Cathedral, and the vice-president of the Irish Antiquarian Society. But we request our readers to look to what is now before them, and they have our free consent to devise escape for Dr. Todd from that heavy reproach, if they can. We can only say that we have read the above passages again and again, to see how such a conclusion may be avoided, and how to avoid it we find not. Book The Eclectic Review Vol 2

Download or read book The Eclectic Review Vol 2 written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclectic Review, Vol. 2: MDCCCXXXVII, July December An ancient University, richly endowed, thronged with candidates for the learned professions, frequented by the aristocracy of the country, and the only theological school for half the clergy of the national church; is an Institution too efficient for good and evil to be looked at with indifference by a wise man and a Christian. Those who are not its members, must not be supposed to have no interest in its condition, and no right to desire its improvement. Whether it be or be not technically a National system, it is necessarily in effect national. Its estates lie in every county, its scholars come from every county; its graduates spread over the whole kingdom, bringing with them the lessons of good or evil which they have imbibed: and signally as a main foundation whence the national clergy are supplied, the University of Oxford affects the welfare of the nation. It is idle then to pretend, that the nation may take no cognizance of so extensive and formidable an organization, because forsooth we must respect the last Wills and Testaments of certain founders and benefactors. If a man leaves his estates for purposes, which after several centuries are found to generate a public nuisance, is his Will to be respected? In truth, it is difficult to repress the thought, that only pure hypocrisy dictates such pretended reverence for the wills of founders. Download or read book The Eclectic Review Vol 4 written by Samuel Greatheed and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclectic Review, Vol. 4: MDCCCXXXVIII; July-December Art. I. Lectures on the Establishment and Extension of National Churches. Delivered in London, from April 25th to May 12, 1838. By Thomas Chalmers, D.D., and LL.D., Professor of Theology in the University of Edinburgh, &c. 8vo. Glasgow: Collins. 1838. The gentlemen who call themselves 'The Christian Influence Society, ' at whose request these Lectures were undertaken, and are now published, must, we think, feel not a little chagrin and disappointment at the abortive result of their exertions. Not only have they failed of their main object, which was to forward the Scottish Church-extension scheme by bringing up from the North its author and champion to enlighten the polite world upon the question, and thereby to influence the decision of Government; but they have exposed to closer observation the weakness of the cause which Dr. Chalmers has been put forward to advocate. The grounds upon which the Lecturer rests his vindication of Establishments, are so paradoxical as to bring the soundness of his judgment into question even with his own party; and his concessions to the Voluntaries and the Dissenters must have been far more displeasing to the high-church portion of his auditors, than his arguments were acceptable. We are much mistaken, if the reputation of Dr. Chalmers in the metropolis did not stand much higher before he delivered these Lectures, than it has since their publication. The political purpose which the Lectures were obviously intended to promote, was not indeed avowed. The Times newspaper, in an elaborate announcement of the intended course, affirmed distinctly, that they would not 'involve in the slightest degree a spirit of political partizanship, or any reflections on the policy of Government in regard to Church Extension.' In my own case it was so. I left school, where I had learnt little or nothing, at about the age of fourteen. I spent the next year at home, learning to hunt and shoot. Then it was that the prospect of going to College opened upon me, and such thoughts as I have expressed in this letter occurred to my mind. I made my resolutions, and I acted up to them: I gave up all desultory reading - l never looked into a novel or a newspaper - I gave up shooting. During the five years I was in Ireland. I had the liberty of going when I pleased to a capital shooting place. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
