Download or read book The Eclectic Review 1838 Vol 4 written by Josiah Conder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclectic Review, 1838, Vol. 4: July December Society, ' at whose request these Lectures were undertaken, and are now published, must, we think, feel not a little chagin and disappointment at the abortive result of their exertions. At only have they failed of their main object, which was to forward the Scottish Church-extension scheme by bringing up from the North its author and champion to enlighten the polite world upon the question, and thereby to influence the decision of Government; but they have exposed to closer observation the weakness of the cause which Dr. Chalmers has been put forward to advocate. The grounds upon which the Lecturer rests his vin dication of Establishments, are so paradoxical as to bring the soundness of his judgment into question even with his own party; and his concessions to the Voluntaries and the Dissenters must have been far more displeasing to the high-church ortion of his auditors, than his arguments were acceptable. We are much mistaken, if the reputation of Dr. Chalmers in the metropolis did not stand much higher before he delivered these Lectures, than it has since their publication. Book The Royal Throne of Mercy and British Culture in the Victorian Age

Download or read book The Royal Throne of Mercy and British Culture in the Victorian Age written by James Gregory and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first detailed study of its kind, James Gregory's book takes a historical approach to mercy by focusing on widespread and varied discussions about the quality, virtue or feeling of mercy in the British world during Victoria's reign. Gregory covers an impressive range of themes from the gendered discourses of 'emotional' appeal surrounding Queen Victoria to the exercise and withholding of royal mercy in the wake of colonial rebellion throughout the British empire. Against the backdrop of major events and their historical significance, a masterful synthesis of rich source material is analysed, including visual depictions (paintings and cartoons in periodicals and popular literature) and literary ones (in sermons, novels, plays and poetry). Gregory's sophisticated analysis of the multiple meanings, uses and operations of royal mercy duly emphasise its significance as a major theme in British cultural history during the 'long 19th century'. This will be essential reading for those interested in the history of mercy, the history of gender, British social and cultural history and the legacy of Queen Victoria's reign.

Book The Reception of Classical German Literature in England 1760 1860 Volume 3

Download or read book The Reception of Classical German Literature in England 1760 1860 Volume 3 written by John Boening and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extensive scope of this collection means that this documentary record of the reception of German literature in England is a valuable scholarly resource. One of the most important features of British literary and intellectual history over the past 250 years is the influence of German literature. From the second half of the 18th Century, through the first decades of the 19th, German books and ideas attracted, then gained the attention of a nation. Despite the acknowledged importance of the influence on writers such as Coleridge and Carlyle the subject, though often alluded to, was rarely studied. This collection provides a guidebook through the masses of periodical and allows the English side of the Anglo-German literary relationship to be explored in detail. In order to make the collection useful to scholars with a wide range of interest, it has been divided into three parts: Part 1 is a chronological presentation of commentary on German literature in general. It also contains collective reviews of multiple German authors, notices of important anthologies and reactions to influential works about Germany and its culture. Part 2 collects reviews of 18th Century individual German authors and Part 3 is devoted to the English reception of Goethe and Schiller. Parts 2 & 3 contain cross-references to the collective reviews of Part 1. Containing over 200 British serials and articles and reviews from all the major English literary periodicals, the collection also includes a broad sampling of opinion from the more general magazines, including some popular religious publications.
