Book excerpt: It is 1956, and although Jonathon Statler is barely fifteen, he is already a proven survivor. Locked in a world of loneliness and abuse, Jonathon has nonetheless managed to learn golf and tennis, and embrace a levelheaded approach to life. He has paid a price, however. He is grossly overweight and short on self confidence. His eyes are more often on the tops of his sneakers than level with the world around him. Until one magical summer when Jonathon meets Malcolm Platt, the Director of Robert Morris Camp for Boys, and Angus McClatchy, a former teacher who now considers himself nothing more than an old man and, finally, a sensitive young woman named Becky Wilson. The Echoes of Summer is set against a background of racial and religious tension so prevalent during the 1950s. Author John Kendall captures the interaction of youth and age that provides the catalyst for a story that lifts the spirit and makes it soar.

Book excerpt: An emotional story of love, betrayal, friendship, and family from #1 New York Times bestselling author Maeve Binchy. David Power and Clare O'Brien both grew up dreaming of escape from the battered seaside town of Castlebay, Ireland, but they might as well have had the ocean between them. David is the cherished son of a prosperous doctor, while Clare lives with her large family behind their faltering store, longing for a moment of quiet to study. When they both go to university in Dublin—he as a matter of course, she on a hard-won scholarship—their worlds collide. They find freedom in each other—until the families, lovers, and secrets they left in Castlebay come back to haunt them... “Laughter and tears, it’s what Binchy does best.”—San Francisco Chronicle Book Review “The Castlebay Maeve Binchy creates is a marvelous place.”—The New York Times Book Review

Book Following the Echoes

Download or read book Following the Echoes written by Claudia Fox Reppen and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-07-20 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the death of their British-born Grandma Gladys in 2021, siblings Claudia and Lance took a sudden interest in the Canadian fiancé Gladys lost during World War II, Wendell “Del” Pierce Drew, a member of the elite RAF Pathfinder Force with Bomber Command who hailed from the tiny farming settlement of Radisson, Saskatchewan. With a couple of old photos and a few anecdotes to go on, the siblings set out to uncover Del’s story, discovering a rich history of people searching for adventure or a better life. From the Canadian prairie to London’s Notting Hill, to the shores of the North Sea and beyond, Following the Echoes uncovers stories obscured by the passage of time and reflects on the ripple effect that the pulling of literal and metaphorical triggers can have on our lives. Exploring the theme of grief, the book recounts an incredible event in Gladys’s life, when her grief over Del suddenly and dramatically resurfaced one day in 1993—forty-nine years after his death—as well as the story of Del’s parents, Albert and Achsah Drew, revealing how they experienced unfathomable loss long before losing their son in the war. This is the first book to examine in depth the fate of Lancaster JB707, which Del and his crewmates were aboard when they disappeared in July 1944, piecing together the events of the last sortie. The reader is taken along the crew’s final moments, even learning who likely pulled the fateful trigger that led to their demise. Finally, the siblings describe how “following the echoes” of incredible coincidences and connections led them to a place of deep awe and admiration, as well as profound gratitude, especially for those in Bomber Command. This is a poignant story of love and loss but also one of a legacy extending into the present, uniting families, friends, and fellow citizens through exploring the richness and tragedy in the lives of those who built Canada into a great nation, and how the Greatest Generation sacrificed to preserve it—lest we forget.

Book Distributions of Radar Echoes Over the United States

Download or read book Distributions of Radar Echoes Over the United States written by D. D. Grantham and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The frequency and probability of radar echoes of convective clouds over the United States are presented. Analysis of three years of observations from a 31-station WSR-57 weather radar network indicates that at all altitudes, radar echo probabilities are greatest over Florida and the Gulf coast, generally decreasing northward over the United States. Also, largest probabilities for most layers and locations occur in summer. Echoes have been reported up to at least 70 kft in May, June, and July, and up to 60 kft in winter. Diurnal variations reveal greatest probabilities between 1600 and 2100 LST in all regions. Largest mean monthly 3-hour values are 85 percent, and the maximum mean daily range is roughly 65 percent in the southeast during the summer months. The probability of an echo-free horizontal view near the earth's surface for a 100-mile range is also presented. Tabulations of echo-free sectors, as percent of the 360-degree radar scope, show that the probability of obstructions to a horizontal view increases generally from northwest to southwest during all seasons. The probability of having no echoes is greater in winter than in summer except along the Pacific coastal region. Diurnal variability is larger in July than in January. (Author)

Book Echoes of a Distant Summer

Download or read book Echoes of a Distant Summer written by Guy Johnson and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-10-12 with total page 954 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “You done lived a tough life, boy, and I know I’m part responsible for that. I ain’t askin’ you to excuse me or forgive me. Just know I did the best I knew to do. I was just tryin’ to make you tough enough to deal with the world. To stand tall among men, I knew you had to be strong and have yo’ own mind.” “You were preparing me for war, Grandfather.” Guy Johnson, the author of the critically acclaimed debut Standing at the Scratch Line, continues the Tremain family saga. Jackson St. Clair Tremain hasn’t spoken to his grandfather King in nearly twenty years. Disgusted by the violence and bloodlust that seemed to be his grandfather’s way of life, Jackson chose to distance himself from King and live a simpler life. But now King is gravely ill, and his impending death places Jackson’s life—as well as those of his family and friends—in jeopardy. Reluctantly, Jackson travels to Mexico to see King. But after a brief reconciliation, his grandfather is assassinated, and Jackson suspects that his grandmother Serena may have had a hand in it. Jackson takes control of King’s organization, and as he does, he reflects on the summers he spent in Mexico as a child and the lessons he learned there at the knee of his strong-willed, complex grandfather. In Echoes of a Distant Summer, Guy Johnson introduces us to a new hero, Jackson St. Clair Tremain, who learns that, like his grandfather, he must be willing to protect those he loves—at all costs.
