Book The Easy Road to Reading

Download or read book The Easy Road to Reading written by Carrie Josephine Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Easy Road to Reading: Primer The subject matter in a beginning text book in reading should touch the child personally and be in keeping with his natural activities if it is to be of value in teaching him to read. It should appear for him in the form of action, rhythm, stories, plays, and games if the symbols of reading are to convey meaning. This Primer has been compiled with the foregoing in mind, the purpose being to offer an easy and natural course in reading for beginners. The vocabulary and subject matter have accordingly been chosen with special reference to the natural activities of children. Children are actors by nature and they therefore perform with pleasure the actions which words suggest. That which a child does involving self-activity makes a deep impression; thus the true meaning of words can be easily impressed upon him. It is, therefore, important that there shall be included in the early lessons a good list of action words which shall form the basis of interesting and thought-inspiring reading lessons and which can be easily demonstrated in class-room practice. The first nine lessons of The Easy Road to Reading Primer consist of simple reading matter compiled from a desirable list of action words. All these early lessons can be dramatized and the meaning of the words can thus be easily taught by having the children perform the actions suggested by them. Lessons 16-32 consist of interesting reading in which the new words are introduced in simple rhymes made up in part from the action words previously learned. These rhymes serve to fix the meaning of the words and sentences in the lessons and make the reading matter more interesting. Lessons 32-38 consist of short rhymes from that classic of childhood literature, Mother Goose. The lessons preserve the integrity of the rhymes, yet introduce a sufficient number of other sentences to emphasize the new words and fix by repetition those already presented. Lessons 38-68 are on nature. This section will be read in the fall of the year when the outside world is full of beauty and attractiveness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Howell Primer A child's book is not the place for a pedagogical treatise on the teaching of reading. The author would only say that this primer may be used by the followers of any method. The book is constructed on a phonic principle, which makes It particularly easy for that method or for the alphabetic method. At first only one sound of any letter is used, and sufficient drill is given for the pupil to learn that sound before any other 18 taken. After the first twelve letters only one new thing 18 taught at a time this makes the grading of the book uniform and easy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primer This Book of Beginnings, prepared for the very little ones, has for its first consideration the child and the things which he enjoys. His interests are varied and superficial, therefore many subjects are presented. He is held to one subject until he has assimilated but not exhausted it. His joy in his own creative imagination is not overlooked nor limited. The child's power of concentration is slight. Stories and rhymes make a strong appeal to him, and by holding his atten tention increase his ability for continued attention. So the story element predominates, although nature, animals, play mates and the home all have their delightful place in these pages. Download or read book The New Beacon Primer Classic Reprint written by James Hiram Fassett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-20 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Beacon Primer The New Beacon Primer is a simple reader, based upon the child's interests and the vocabulary of the home. The power' derived from a knowledge of phonics has always been admitted by educators, but the stilted and mechanical readers of the past did much to throw dis credit upon any strictly phonetic system. The author of the New Beacon Primer has avoided expressions that are obviously dragged in for their phonetic value, and while he has provided constant opportunities for practice in the text, there is no sacrifice of unity or of dramatic interest. This is made possible by his method of organization. Underlying the science of phonics are a few principles which are so vital and so essential to successful teaching that the first instruction given to the child should be in strict accordance with them. The Beacon system follows the deductions of those who have made a Special study of the science of speech and the practice of our great English dictionaries. Teachers may therefore feel confident that they are working in harmony with the leading authorities on the subject.
