About half a mile outside, the engine would be detached and switched off and the cars rolled into the station on their own momentum. This required good judgment and nerve on the part of the train crews, as the slightest miscalculation in applying the brakes might result in the cars crashing through the station into Causeway street. She has also brought for the same purpose about 2000 bars of railroad iron. The original sleepers on the Lowell road were of granite, but were soon done away with as they were found to make the track too rigid. At first the stage companies did not anticipate any very serious results from the new competition. A prominent stage proprietor in Providence, R. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Railroads were the first big business enterprises of America and made possible many other industries. They knitted our expansive nation together and ably transported people, materials, supplies, goods, and mail. Literally hundreds, if not thousands, of railroads were built in the United States during the nineteenth century. Among the more colorful was the New York and New England Railroad, which connected Boston with the Hudson River via the uplands of Connecticut. If ever a company had its share of trials and tribulations it was this firm. Yet its fascinating, topsy-turvy past is today largely forgotten. This work brings to life how the New York and New England Railroad evolved from humble beginnings to becoming a potent transportation force. Meticulously researched with many period images and a lively text, our journey begins in the 1840s and lasts until the late 1890s. Climb aboard for a special trip into this unique chapter of American railroad history!

Book excerpt: Mobilized in 1917 by New England railroads, this all-volunteer regiment served the victorious Allied armies on the Western Front in World War I by moving men and materials over narrow gauge railroads. Book East Branch Lincoln Railroad

Download or read book East Branch Lincoln Railroad written by Erin Paul Donovan and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Built by James Everell Henry, the East Branch & Lincoln Railroad (EB&L) is considered to be the grandest and largest logging railroad operation ever built in New England. In 1892, the mountain town of Lincoln, New Hampshire, was transformed from a struggling wilderness enclave to a thriving mill town when Henry moved his logging operation from Zealand. He built houses, a company store, sawmills, and a railroad into the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River watershed to harvest virgin spruce. Despite the departure of the last EB&L log train from Lincoln Woods by 1948, the industry's cut-and-run practices forever changed the future of land conservation in the region, prompting legislation like the Weeks Act of 1911 and the Wilderness Act of 1964. Today, nearly every trail in the Pemigewasset Wilderness follows or utilizes portions of the old EB&L Railroad bed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the New England Association, Railway Superintendents: Organized in Boston, Massachusetts, April 5, 1848, Dissolved October 1, 1857 Washington, D. C., April, 1910. At a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Eastern Railroad Association held March 10, 1910, attention was called to a manuscript book containing the original records of the "New England Association of Railway Superintendents," organized April 5, 1848, and dissolved October 1, 1857, which appears to have been the first railway association formed in this country having among its objects the protection of its members from unjust claims for infringement of patents. The book has been in the possession of the Secretary of the Eastern Railroad Association since early in 1875, when he obtained it directly from the widow of the Secretary who kept the records. It is therefore authentic, and contains much interesting information in connection with early railway matters, together with the names and signatures in facsimile of some of the leading pioneers in the railway business in this country. Believing that the preservation in permanent form, and the possession of copies of this book would be appreciated, the Committee ordered a limited number of copies to be printed in pamphlet form for the use of the Association. With the exception of the addition of indexes to facilitate the finding of names, or subject matter, the contents of the record book are herewith reproduced in original form.
