Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eastern Question in the Eighteenth Century: The Partition of Poland and the Treaty of Kainardji Mr. Bramwell has asked me to write a few words of preface to his translation of M. Sorel's admirable study in eighteenth century diplomacy. This study was an early work of the greatest of living historians. My task seems somewhat superfluous in view of the preface in which M. Sorel himself has explained the scope of his essay. Till a comparatively late date the history of the 'Greatest Crime of Modern Times' was known only through Rulhiere's famous Histoire de l'Anarchie de la Pologne (Paris, 1807). But the last phases of the 'Polish Question' were made clear to us when the late Professor von Sybel's History of the French Revolution appeared in English, and the Due de Broglie's Secret du Roi has paved the way for the comprehension of the earlier history of the same question, and has explained the failure of France to assist her two old allies Poland and Turkey. Book Eastern Problems at the Close of the Eighteenth Century Classic Reprint

Download or read book Eastern Problems at the Close of the Eighteenth Century Classic Reprint written by Alfred L. P. Dennis and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eastern Problems at the Close of the Eighteenth Century The history of the world, in its largest aspect, is the history of the intercourse between East and West. This intercourse has been potent in many important directions; in affairs of race, religion, and trade, the vital relation between Asia and Europe has either created or solved difficult problems in human existence. It has also been continuous, and though there have been years when this interchange has seemed of small effect, the true interpretation of world history can be given only when the struggle between Orient and Occident is recognized as an ever present factor. Then the simplest events of daily life in regions where the forces of two civilizations have joined battle for dominion become significant of great issues. The struggle is, furthermore, a signal example of the unity of history; older than historical chronicles, the contest touches the lives of men and nations to-day as it did when Jason sailed in search of the Golden Fleece, or when the champions of Greece crossed over to Asia in pursuit of Helen. This conflict between East and West is an essential part of the thought and life of the ancient world. The Homeric epic derives from it; it is embodied in the story of Zeus and Europa, who is shown as the daughter of an Asiatic king; it is the inspiration of Herodotus and Xenophon; Marathon, Salamis, and Platea tell of the antagonism of two continents.
