Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Registers of Huggate: Yorkshire The Registers of Huggate commence in the year 1539 and, to the year 1812, are contained in five volumes. Volumes I and II have been bound together of recent years, and measure 14 ins. long by 9 ins. wide. The leaves are of parchment. Volume I contains Baptisms, 1539 to 1627, and Marriages and Burials, 1539 to 1626. The manner of making the entries in this volume has been to divide the page into two columns, and to keep each class of entry, whether Baptism, Burial, or Marriage, in its own column throughout. The transcription and printing have followed the Register page by page, thus avoiding the possibility of any omission, which might otherwise have occurred if each class of entry had been taken separately. Volume II begins in 1708 and ends in 1787 for the Baptisms and Burials, and in 1751 for the Marriages. There is thus a break of some eighty-two years between the two volumes, probably an entire Register being lost. That this loss is not of recent date is proved by the Return made to Parliament in 1831, where, on page 379, it is stated that "No Register, 1625 to 1708, can be found." Volume III is of paper, and measures 15 ins. long by 9 ins. wide, and consists of thirty-five used pages, the remainder being blank, and contains Banns and Marriages only, from 1755 to 1812, in the usual printed form. Volume IV measures 17 ins. long by 12 ins. wide, and contains only seven pages that are used for entries, four at the beginning. Baptisms, 1789 to 1798, and three at the end. Burials, 1788 to 1798. Among them he recognised his own, and had scarcely time to relate the incident before he died. Very many similar stories stories not ancient, but very modern - are current to day among the old folks. Here is one. A man went on St. Mark's Eve to watch in the church porch, where he saw enter the church the shades of several he knew, followed by some mysterious unknown forms, carrying a coffin. He endeavoured to see the features of the corpse, but was unable to do so 5 though, in answer to his earnest longing, a whisper came through the quiet midnight air, 'tis yourself He went home, filled with fatal fear, took to his bed and died. The appearance of the wraith or form of the deceased is still as firmly believed to be a Sign of death as it was inthe days Of Olaf and though the bah-gest, * with its eyes as big as saucers, has ceased its terrifying rambles, and its growlings are no longer heard round the house of the doomed one, the howling of the yard dog has taken its place as an omen of death. The ancient belief that the spirit requires space or room to pass still receives credence; for when a person is dying a window or door is opened in order that the spirit may pass away easily. One of the most vivid recollections of my boyhood is the death-bed of a younger brother. On a low bed, near a corner of the room, lay the poor little fellow whose life was rapidly ebbing. By the bedside sat my aged grandmother, silently praying, and the only sounds in the room were the laboured breathing of the dying boy and the smothered sobs of the assembled relatives; and as the end drew near my grandmother directed that a door leading into another room should be opened, and that room was ever afterwards associated with ghosts and spirits. The West Riding is by far the largest, the wealthiest, and the most densely populated division of the county, the rivers Ouse and Ure forming the principal line of demarcation between it and the North and the East Ridings; and the North Riding being mainly separated from the East Riding by the rivers Tees and Derwent. The length of the shire extends from Harthill in the south, to the mouth of the Tees in the north, a distance of nearly seventy miles. The breadth from Flambro' Head to Horncastle, upon the river Lune, is eighty miles. The soil of this county is generally fertile, yielding a sufiiciency of corn and cattle within itself. In the West Riding, about four miles from Leeds, a place called Brantley Fall, is rendered notable byits extensive quarries of stone; the products of which, when newly hewn are soft, but when exposed to the weather become remarkably hard and solid. Another spot, in the same Riding, Knottingley, about fifteen miles from Leeds, has long been very famous for its abundant production of lime-stone. When quarried it is burnt, and conveyed into other parts of the county, which are hilly and cold, serving excellently well for manure to enrich the land, and consequently to improve the corn fields. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Water Supply, (From Underground Sources) Of the East Riding of Yorkshire, Together With the Neighbouring Portions of the Vales of York and Pickering: With Records of Sinkings and Borings This is the fifth of the series of County Memoirs dealing with the water supply from underground sources, the counties already dealt with being Sussex (1899), Berkshire (1902), Lincolnshire (1904), and Suffolk (1906). Although this work is more particularly on the water-supply of the East Riding it has been deemed advisable to include all available records of borings and sinkings without regard to the purpose for which they were made, as all such records are useful in estimating the thickness and character of the strata. In getting together these records we have had much assistance from the Local Government Board, engineers, medical officers and others; especially from Dr. H. F. Parsons, Mr. W. Whitaker, Professor Kendall, Mr. W. H. Crofts, Dr. J. Mitchell Wilson and Messrs. Fairbank. Dr. Parsons, who formerly resided in the district, and whose knowledge of the country is very intimate, has given us much help and many useful suggestions. Ready assistance has also been afforded by well sinkers and borers, especially by Mr. J. Villiers, who placed his boring book at our disposal. These records are arranged in the four districts into which the country is naturally divided; but some sections at places outside the boundaries of the Riding are included, as many of these have an important bearing on the water supply of the strata within the area more especially referred to. The records are published as they have been received, but in most cases the geological horizons are indicated as far as can be determined, from the terms used by well-sinkers. Without examining the material brought up it is often difficult to decide at what depth the solid rock was reached. Dr. H. R. Mill contributes the chapter on rainfall and the rainfall map.
