Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lion's share of smartphones, computers, televisions, semiconductor devices, and other electronics goods is made in East Asia. Final electronics goods are assembled in China, and sophisticated parts and components (P&C) such as semiconductor chips, image sensors, and ceramic filters in upstream Asian economies such as Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. How did Asia become the center of electronics manufacturing? How did learning take place that allowed Asian workers to produce cutting-edge products? Are there lessons for countries like the US that seek to reshore manufacturing of semiconductors, flat-panel displays, and related products? This Element addresses these issues.

Book Japanese Foreign Direct Investment and the East Asian Industrial System

Download or read book Japanese Foreign Direct Investment and the East Asian Industrial System written by H. Horaguchi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japanese foreign direct investment has played a leading role in Asian economies for more than two decades. This book, describing the changing industrial dynamics after the Asian currency crisis in 1997, focuses on corporate strategies of Japanese automobile and electronics companies in Asian nations, with detailed analysis of management issues and strategies from the viewpoint of both the home economy and the recipient host economies. Among the cases presented are the global restructuring of the Korean automobile industry and the transfer of automotive technology to China via Taiwan. Other studies, from the electronics industry, look at production sites in Malaysia, backward integration in Singapore, and forward integration in Hong Kong. The contributions of specialists from Asia, Europe, and the United States collected here envision an ongoing process of globalization and provide valuable perspective and background for business management and East Asian studies.

Book International Production Networks in East Asia s Electronics Industry

Download or read book International Production Networks in East Asia s Electronics Industry written by Shahrun Abdul-Aziz and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the East Asia's electronic production network and its evolution from 1990 to 2010. A network analysis is used to identify the major trade links for both parts and components and final products, and changes in roles, trading partners and network patterns for the years 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005 and 2010. The results suggested that the role of Japan and the Korea in the 1990s expanded to becoming exporters of electronic parts and components and final electronics as well as importers of final electronics. In contrast, the role of Malaysia and Thailand seems to have been confined to being exporter of both electronic parts and components and final electronics. Meanwhile, some countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines and China experienced erratic changes in their role, while that of Singapore remains unchanged. The results also indicate that the relocation of Japanese and Korean FDI to lower-labour-cost countries such as China in the 2000s has forced some ASEAN countries to each upgrade their electronics industry and emerged as a main supplier of electronic parts and components for their neighbouring countries. These circumstances, in turn, have changed the pattern of hierarchy within the international electronics production network in the ASEAN region.

Book The Political Economy of Industrial Policy in East Asia

Download or read book The Political Economy of Industrial Policy in East Asia written by Sung Gul Hong and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Political Economy of Industrial Policy in East Asia sheds new light on the reasons why Taiwan and South Korea have achieved such remarkable progress in the semiconductor industry. This book focuses on the institutional arrangements in Taiwan and South Korea across time and shows how the state and society have interacted to accomplish the successful development of the semiconductor industry. It argues persuasively that three institutional factors are critical in understanding the development processes of the semiconductor industry in these two countries: first, the different degrees of business concentration, second, the different state structures and their influence on policy making networks, and finally, the different international political economies in which the two countries are located. The author challenges the developmental statist argument which has traditionally offered the most popular explanation of East Asian development, and includes recent industrial data and statistics demonstrating the current status of this rapidly changing industry. This book will be welcomed by graduate students and academics in the fields of comparative political economy, international political economy and industrial policy. It will also appeal to those interested in industrial development strategies, East Asian development and comparative politics.

Book Globalization and Regional Dynamics

Download or read book Globalization and Regional Dynamics written by Wolfgang Klenner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wntmgs by Japanese and Gennan economists presented here originated against the backdrop of ongoing globalization processes and notable fluctuations in regional economic dynamics observable at the same time, primarily in the East and South East Asian area. They provided the occasion for these writers to come to tenns with globalization processes, and in particular with the stabilizing and destabilizing elements at work in them. This is the basis for their investigation of the options provided by economics and economic policy for stabilizing an ever more tightly interwoven world economy. The regional focal points of the contributions are the East Asian realm and the European Union, and the points of view are in every case both from the Japanese and the Gennan side. Questions of international competition and mechanisms of the spread of the crisis in the wake of globalization processes lie at the centre of the analyses by Hisashi Watanabe and Willy Kraus. Hisashi Watanabe focusses on the relationship, an especially important one from the Japanese perspective, between Japan and South Korea and takes up the problem of South Korea's demand that Japan should energetically promote its own transition to a service-sector-oriented society and withdraw from certain areas of manufacturing. This, it is argued, will grant Japan's Asian neighbours better chances for development and make a positive contribution to the economic stabilization of the region.

Book Global Production Networking and Technological Change in East Asia

Download or read book Global Production Networking and Technological Change in East Asia written by Shahid Yusuf and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2004-07-01 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the coming decades, East Asian economies must face the challenges of an increasingly globalized marketplace. This book explores the changing parameters of competition in East Asia, and argues that success ultimately will depend on the ability of the region's firms to harness the potential of global production networks and to build their own innovative capability. Presenting the latest findings on global production networks and the evolution of technological capabilities, it provides researchers, students, and policymakers with in-depth information and analysis on key issues related to growth and development in East Asia. East Asian firms must not only achieve greater efficiency but also become more innovative, offering differentiated products in order to vie with other first-tier suppliers of multinational corporations. These firms will also need to develop a technological edge if they are to compete with corporations from the leading OECD countries and form their own global production networks. 'Global Production Networking and Technological Change in East Asia' argues that a development strategy linked to technological advance will be necessary to foster the growth of innovative national firms that can remain competitive in global markets.
