OFAIR midspring, besung so oft and oft, How can I praise thy loveliness enow ? Thy sun that burns not, and thy breezes soft That o'er the blossoms of the orchard blow, The thousand things that 'neath the young leaves grow, The hopes and chances of the growing year, Winter forgotten long, and summer near. When Summer brings the lily and the rose, She brings us fear; her very death she brings Hid in her anxious heart, the forge of woes; And, dull with fear, no more the mavis sings. But thou ! thou diest not, but thy fresh life clings About the fainting autumn's sweet decay, When in the earth the hopeful seed they lay. Ah ! life of all the year, why yet do I Amid thy snowy blossoms' fragrant drift, Still long for that which never draweth nigh, Striving my pleasure from my pain to sift, Some weight from off my fluttering mirth to lift ? -- Now, when far bells are ringing, " Come again, Come back, past years ! why will ye pass in vain ?" AND now the watery April sun lit up Upon the fair board golden ewer and cup, And over the bright silken tapestry The fresh young boughs were gladdening every eye, And round the board old faces you might see Amidst the blossoms and their greenery. So when the flutes were silent, and the birds, Rejoicing in their flood of unknown words, Were heard again, a silken-fastened book A certain elder from his raiment took, And said, " O friends, few words are best to-day, And no new thing I bring you; yet ye may Be pleased to hear an ancient tale again, That, told so long ago, doth yet remain Fresh e'en 'mongst us, far from the Argive land: Which tale this book, writ wholly by mine hand, Holds gathered up as I have heard it told. " Surely I fear me, midst the ancient gold Base metal ye will light on here and...

This book was released on 2015-12-13 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Earthly Paradise by William Morris is an epic poem. It is a lengthy collection of retellings of various myths and legends from Greece and Scandinavia. It was begun in 1868 and several later volumes followed until 1870. The Earthly Paradise was generally well received by reviewers: according to one study it "established Morris's reputation as one of the foremost poets of his day." Morris uses a frame story concerning a group of medieval wanderers searching for a land of everlasting life. After much disillusionment they discover a surviving colony of Greeks with whom they exchange stories. The poem is divided into twelve sections, each section representing a month of the year and containing two tales told in verse, drawn largely from classical mythology or the Icelandic sagas. All of Morris's subsequent books were published as "by the author of The Earthly Paradise."

Book excerpt: This collection of articles on varied facets of early modern Bengal showcases cutting edge work in the field and hopes to encourage new research. The essays explore the trading networks, religious traditions, artistic and literary patronage, and politico-cultural practices that emerged in roughly sixteenth-eighteenth centuries. Using a wide array of sources, the contributors to this volume, coming from diverse academic affiliations, and including many young researchers, have attempted to address various historiographical ‘black holes’ bringing in new material and interpretations. Early modern Bengal’s history tends to get overshadowed by the later developments of the nineteenth century. What this assortment of articles highlights is that this period needs to be studied afresh, and in depth. The region underwent rapid transformations as it got politically integrated with Northern India and its empires and economically with extensive global economic networks. Combined with its unique geography, the trajectory of this region in all spheres manifest an almost constant interplay of local and extra-local forces – be it in literature, art, economic domain, political and religious cultures – and considerable enterprise and ingenuity. Thus, a variety of themes – including travel accounts, Portuguese and Arakanese presence, early Dutch, French, Ostend companies’ forays into the region, artistic production in the Nizamat and later collections of art and missionaries, the English company state’s intrusions in local economy in salt and raw silk production and indigenous reactions and rebellions, consumption practices related to religious activities, circulation and translation of texts, representation of women in vernacular writings, and organization of religious traditions – have been analysed in this volume, with a wide ranging introduction tying up the themes to the broader historiographical issues and contexts. The collection will be an invaluable reference tool for students and scholars of history, especially of early modern India. Please note: This title is co-published with Manohar Publishers, New Delhi. Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
