Book The Early Stages of Tabanidae Horse Flies Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Early Stages of Tabanidae Horse Flies Classic Reprint written by Werner Marchand and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Stages of Tabanidae (Horse-Flies) There is, however, another consideration of some importance which has guided me in preparing this review; that is, the desirability of having, generally, all the facts on one subject of research concentrated in one language, preferably English. The diversity of languages is a great hindrance for the progress of science, and from the point of view of methodical unification, specialists in any branch of science should be encouraged to concentrate all the literature on their own subject in the language which they prefer to have used. Having given considerable time to the study of this question, I cannot see any serious objection to the more general adoption of English in science. It is to be hoped that the temporary disadvantages to the non-english-speaking scientists, resulting from its adoption would be made up by the advantages of a great progress in science which would undoubtedly follow. It is for the scientists of English-speaking countries to pave the way, by conquering the field systematically, subject after subject, and to facilitate the production of new work by a complete assimilation of work previously done in foreign languages. I wish to express my indebtedness to the authorities of the American Museum of Natural History and of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Science for giving me liberal access to their libraries and collections, and to Dr. Theobald Smith, Director of the Department of Animal Pathology under whose guidance this work was rendered possible. Book Zebra Stripes

  • Author : Timothy M. Caro
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2016-12-05
  • ISBN : 022641101X

Download or read book Zebra Stripes written by Timothy M. Caro and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do zebras have stripes? Popular explanations range from camouflage to confusion of predators, social facilitation, and even temperature regulation. It is a challenge to test these proposals on large animals living in the wild, but using a combination of careful observations, simple field experiments, comparative information, and logic, Caro concludes that black-and-white stripes are an adaptation to thwart biting fly attack.

Book Biology of Blood Sucking Insects

Download or read book Biology of Blood Sucking Insects written by Mike Lehane and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blood-sucking insects are the vectors of many of the most debilitating parasites of man and his domesticated animals. In addition they are of considerable direct cost to the agricultural industry through losses in milk and meat yields, and through damage to hides and wool, etc. So, not surprisingly, many books of medical and veterinary entomology have been written. Most of these texts are organized taxonomically giving the details of the life-cycles, bionomics, relationship to disease and economic importance of each of the insect groups in turn. I have taken a different approach. This book is topic led and aims to discuss the biological themes which are common in the lives of blood-sucking insects. To do this I have concentrated on those aspects of the biology of these fascinating insects which have been clearly modified in some way to suit the blood-sucking habit. For example, I have discussed feeding and digestion in some detail because feeding on blood presents insects with special problems, but I have not discussed respiration because it is not affected in any particular way by haematophagy. Naturally there is a subjective element in the choice of topics for discussion and the weight given to each. I hope that I have not let my enthusiasm for particular subjects get the better of me on too many occasions and that the subject material achieves an overall balance.
