Book Old or New School Methodism

Download or read book Old or New School Methodism written by Kevin M. Watson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 7, 1881, Matthew Simpson, Bishop in the Methodist Episcopal Church, in a London sermon asserted that, "As to the divisions in the Methodist family, there is little to mar the family likeness." Nearly a quarter-century earlier, Benjamin Titus (B.T.) Roberts, a minister in the same branch of Methodism as Simpson, had published an article titled in the Northern Independent in which he argued that Methodism had split into an "Old School" and "New School." He warned that if the new school were to "generally prevail," then "the glory will depart from Methodism." As a result, Roberts was charged with "unchristian and immoral conduct" and expelled from the Genesee Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC). Old or New School Methodism? examines how less than three decades later Matthew Simpson could claim that the basic beliefs and practices that Roberts had seen as threatened were in fact a source of persisting unity across all branches of Methodism. Kevin M. Watson argues that B. T. Roberts's expulsion from the MEC and the subsequent formation of the Free Methodist Church represent a crucial moment of transition in American Methodism. This book challenges understandings of American Methodism that emphasize its breadth and openness to a variety of theological commitments and underemphasize the particular theological commitments that have made it distinctive and have been the cause of divisions over the past century and a half. Old or New School Methodism? fills a major gap in the study of American Methodism from the 1850s to 1950s through a detailed study of two of the key figures of the period and their influence on the denomination.

Download or read book The Meaning of Pentecost in Early Methodism written by Laurence W. Wood and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Fletcher was an influential figure in the history of Methodism. This study, based on a reading of the primary sources in Fletcher and John Wesley, looks at Fletcher's pneumatological and dispensational themes and examines Fletcher's relationship with Wesley and other significant figures of early Methodism in England and America. The author, professor of systematic theology at Asbury Theological Seminary, argues that Fletcher and Wesley agreed on the meaning of sanctification in light of the language of the Pentecost. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Schools of Methodism Many years ago the undersigned became interested in the schools opened principally through the exertions of Bishop Asbury. From the Bishop's "Journal," their names, and but little more, were learned. Methodist historians said but little of any of them, and nothing of most. In response to hundreds of letters, and from certain local histories of States and counties, such facts were gathered as enabled the writer to prepare brief historical sketches of all the Methodist schools belonging to the Asburyan period. In October, 1884, he submitted to our veteran editor of the "Methodist Review" the question, "What shall be done with these sketches, so as most to benefit the Church?" The response was, "I am glad you have done the work indicated. The only right thing to do with your MSS. is to publish them in permanent form. What you have collected respecting the schools of Bishop Asbury is of very great value. It will stand alone; and also correct some wide-spread misapprehensions; a book made up of these accounts, and then of the renewed movements, coming down to about 1840. I hope you will prepare such a book." To succeed in the work recommended by Dr. Curry, the aid of the schools to be named in the volume was indispensable. Letters were addressed to many of the leading educators in the Church, and to some other officials. Without exception the plan proposed by Dr. Curry was approved. President Beach, of Wesleyan University, wrote: "I am glad you have taken this work in hand. I will aid you."
