Download or read book Toxicology of the Pancreas written by Parviz M. Pour and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-07-27 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increased incidence of pancreatic cancer in the Western world and its grave prognosis has resulted in an urgency for research in this area. Until now the available data on toxicology of the pancreas has been few and fragmentary, scattered throughout the literature. A benchmark volume, Toxicology of the Pancreas pulls together information in this neglected area of toxicological research and highlights fundamental research performed in the last ten years. Leaders in the field discuss important structures, the detoxification and toxification process at the cellular and sub-cellular level, the distribution of phase 1 and phase 2 drug-metabolizing enzymes and their role in pancreatic disease, and the role of diet and toxicants on pancreatic disease. The book also covers the role of altered genes in the integrity of the pancreas and explores comparative toxicology in humans and in the lab species used in testing. Illustrated with histological, electron microscopical, and immunohistochemical formats, this book provides a comprehensive and novel presentation of biological and toxicological data. It stands alone as a reliable resource of information easily accessible to professionals in different disciplines.
Download or read book Molecular Basis of Health and Disease written by Undurti N. Das and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-02 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes how the balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory molecules is related to health and disease. It is suggested that many diseases are initiated and their progress is influenced by inflammatory molecules and a decrease in the production and/or action of anti-inflammatory molecules and this imbalance between pro- and anti-inflammatory molecules seems to have been initiated in the perinatal period. This implies that strategies to prevent and manage various adult diseases should start in the perinatal period. An alteration in the metaolism of essential fatty acids and their anti-inflammatory molecules such as lipoxins, resolvins, protecitns, maresins and nitrolipids seems to play a major role in the pathobiology of several adult diseases. Based on these concepts, novel therapeutic approaches in the management of insulin resistance, obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, cancer, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and other auto-immune diseases are presented. Based on all these evidences, a unified concept that several adult diseases are due to an alteration in the balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory molecules is discussed and novel methods of their management are presented.
Download or read book Bradykinin and Related Kinins written by F. Sicuteri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the present century, researchers recognized that dall1aged tissue released chell1ical agents capable of causing catastrophic effects on the whole organisll1 upon enter ing the blood streall1. Following the discovery of histall1ine, these agents at first seell1ed identifiable with biogenic all1ines. However, very soon after the developll1ent of highly selective antagonists, little responsibility was ascribed to the all1ines, and the tissue factors were wrapped once again in ll1ystery. One can ill1agine perhaps and envy the fascinating ll1Oll1ents experienced by the ?ioneers in the kinin field when they realized that plasll1a had an enorll1OUS store of principles endowed with biologic activity, practically indistinguishable froll1 histall1ine, possessing a cOll1plex turnover and regulated by obscure biochell1icalll1echanisll1s. Like other biochell1ical eras, the era of the kinins was opened by a pioneer stage exceptionally long and exciting. After years of arduous isolation, researchers realized that kinins ll1ay not only be the key to unlocking the ll1ystery of histall1ine -like substance s, but alsoll1ay open the way to understanding other basic problell1s in pathology possibly associated with tissue factors.

This book was released on 2011-10-10 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two volumes of Acute Phase Proteins book consist of chapters that give a large panel of fundamental and applied knowledge on one of the major elements of the inflammatory process during the acute phase response, i.e., the acute phase proteins expression and functions that regulate homeostasis. We have organized this book in two volumes - the first volume, mainly containing chapters on structure, biology and functions of APP, the second volume discussing different uses of APP as diagnostic tools in human and veterinary medicine.

Download or read book Human Blood Coagulation written by H.C. Hemker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1952, postgraduate courses for practising physicians and speci alists have been given by the Medical Faculty of the University of Leiden in the Boerhaave Quarter, in which most of its clinics and laboratories are located. During these years, recent advances in a wide variety of m~dical fields and subjects have been discussed by distin guished speakers from many countries. The steadily increasing atten dance has shown that, as could be expected from the rapid progress of modern medicine, there is a widely felt need for this form of postgra duate study. In 1957, therefore, the Leiden Medical Faculty appointed a permanent committee for the organization of postgraduate medical education. Of the courses given since then, certain material proved to have sufficient immediate scientific value to justify publication, and it now gives the Committee great pleasure to announce that in collaboration with the Leiden University Press it will publish the Boerhaave Series for Postgraduate Medical Education. The first volume of this new series is the product of the course on Human Blood Coagulation given in Novem ber 1968. It is our hope that this book will prove valuable not only to those who participated in the course but also to many others working in this and associated fields.
