Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Journal of Charles Wesley Tuesday, March 9. - About three in the afternoon, I first set foot on St. Simon's island, and immediately my spirit revived. N o sooner did I enter upon my ministry than God gave me, like Saul, another heart. So true is that [re mark] of Bishop Hall: The calling of God never leaves a man unchanged neither did God ever employ any one in His service whom He did not enable to the work He set him especially those whom He raises up to the supply of His place, and the representation of Himself.' The people, with Mr. Oglethorpe, were all arrived the day before. The first who saluted me on my landing was honest Mr. Ingham, and that with his usual bearti ness. Never did I more rejoice at the sight of him especially when he told me the treatment he has met with for vindicating the Lord's day such as every minister of Christ must meet with. The people seemed overjoyed to see me; Mr. Oglethorpe in particular received me very kindly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Journal Letters and Related Biographical Items of the Reverend Charles Wesley M A Second Edition

Download or read book The Journal Letters and Related Biographical Items of the Reverend Charles Wesley M A Second Edition written by Prof. Richard P. Heitzenrater and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2023-01-17 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Wesley’s Journal is crucial to an understanding of the beginnings of the Wesleyan/Methodist movement. As a primary record of one of the founders of the Wesleyan/Methodist movement, Charles Wesley’s Journal is crucial to an understanding of the beginnings of that movement. It is an indispensable interpretive companion to John Wesley’s Journal, diaries, and letters. Since it provides essential background to the context of Charles Wesley’s lyrical theology expressed in sacred poetry, it is likewise essential for anyone who wants to understand the context out of which Wesleyan theology, worship, spirituality, hymnody, and conferencing emerged. For a church or movement which avers that “it sings its theology,” Charles Wesley’s Journal is an imperative. This volume is part of a series dedicated to providing a complete and accurate published collection of Charles Wesley’s manuscript items beyond his sermons and verse. The various items in the series constitute crucial primary texts for studying Wesley’s life, his ministry, and his increasingly contentious position within Methodism in his later years. The first two volumes of the series were devoted to Charles Wesley’s Manuscript Journal, a single-bound item held at the Methodist Archives and Research Centre. The present volume gathers a number of scattered items (the majority also held at MARC), many of which are earlier—and more complete—drafts of material in the Manuscript Journal. The third major component of the series is the publication of all of Charles Wesley’s surviving personal correspondence, which is replete with material of biographical and larger historical interest. This second edition adds journal letters and records from December 1716–January 1717 (Accounts of “Old Jeffrey”) and May 12–June 14, 1746. Praise for the First Edition “It’s a great day in the life of a student of the Wesleys when we get a fresh volume of material scarcely known to previous generations. So it is with this collection of Charles Wesley’s journal letters from the period 1738–1756 and similar letters up to 1778 that describe his sons’ musical careers and in fact reveal a great deal about his life. This will be relished by all concerned with the heritage of the Wesleys, and we’re especially blessed to have it in a very well annotated critical edition.”—Ted A. Campbell, Professor of Church History, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX “The publication of Charles Wesley’s Journal Letters helps expand our knowledge of his life and ministry and enrich our understanding of the wider evangelical revival. This is an essential text for scholars of early Methodism edited by renowned experts in the field.” —Geordan Hammond, Senior Lecturer in Church History and Wesley Studies and Director of the Manchester Wesley Research Centre, Nazarene Theological College, Manchester, UK

Book The Sermons of Charles Wesley

Download or read book The Sermons of Charles Wesley written by Charles Wesley and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) is widely recognized as one of the greatest writers of the English hymn. The importance of Charles, however, extends well beyond his undoubted poetic abilities, for he is a figure of central importance in the context of the birth and early growth of Methodism, amovement which today has a worldwide presence. It was Charles and not John who first started the Oxford 'Holy Club' from which the ethos and structures of organised Methodism were eventually to emerge. It was Charles rather than John who first experienced the 'strange warming of the heart' thatcharacterised the experience of many eighteenth-century evangelicals; and in the early years it was Charles no less than John who sought to spread, mainly through his preaching, the evangelical message across England, Wales, and Ireland. Eye witness testimony suggests that Charles was a powerfuland effective preacher whose homiletic work and skill did much to establish and further the early Methodist cause. In this book this other side of Charles Wesley is brought clearly into focus through the publication, for the first time, of all of the known Charles Wesley sermon texts. In the four substantial introductory chapters a case is made for the inclusion of the 23 sermons here presented and there isdiscussion also of the significant text-critical problems that have been negotiated in the production of this volume. Other chapters present a summary of Charles's life and preaching career and seek to show by example how the sermons, no less than the hymns, are significant vehicles for thetransmission of Charles's message. This book hence makes a plea for a reassessment of the place of Charles Wesley in English Church history and argues that he deserves to be recognised as more than just 'The Sweet Singer of Methodism'.
