Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the dual Scottish–Yamasee colonization of Port Royal Those interested in the early colonial history of South Carolina and the southeastern borderlands will find much to discover in Carolina's Lost Colony in which historian Peter N. Moore examines the dual colonization of Port Royal at the end of the seventeenth century. From the east came Scottish Covenanters, who established the small outpost of Stuarts Town. Meanwhile, the Yamasee arrived from the south and west. These European and Indigenous colonizers made common cause as they sought to rival the English settlement of Charles Town to the north and the Spanish settlement of St. Augustine to the south. Also present were smaller Indigenous communities that had long populated the Atlantic sea islands. It is a global story whose particulars played out along a small piece of the Carolina coast. Religious idealism and commercial realities came to a head as the Scottish settlers made informal alliances with the Yamasee and helped to reinvigorate the Indian slave trade—setting in motion a series of events that transformed the region into a powder keg of colonial ambitions, unleashing a chain of hostilities, realignments, displacement, and destruction that forever altered the region.

Book The History of Orangeburg County South Carolina from Its First Settlement to the Close of the Revolutionary War

Download or read book The History of Orangeburg County South Carolina from Its First Settlement to the Close of the Revolutionary War written by Jr. A. S. Salley and published by . This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history presents Orangeburg County, South Carolina, from its early beginnings through the Revolutionary War. It reveals the settlers' struggles to set county boundaries, build churches and roads, and participate in the 1790 convention to establish the constitution for the state. Also transcribed here are the acts that created a court and judicial system for the state. The book's first chapter traces the settlement of each region within the county, and discusses the important contributions of German and Swiss colonists. A variety of county records appear, such as an account of the first settlement made by a white person, in 1704, at what is now called Lyons Creek. Next, marriages, births and deaths, as recorded by the Revs. Giessendanner from 1737 to 1761, make up more than 100 pages. Closing the book, the text's thorough military history presents listings from rosters and order books, transcripts of military orders, and accounts of expeditions and battles which date from 1682 to 1781. Transcripts of correspondence between military leaders and the Council of Safety during the Revolutionary War fill another 100 pages. Sources used to compile this book include: deeds, grants and letters from the offices of the Secretary of State at Columbia; records from the offices of Register of Mesne Conveyance and Judge of Probate of Charleston; contemporary historical works; military and court records; and many others. Maps of the county, illustrations of county sights, portraits and an every-name plus subject index enhance the text. No Orangeburg County researcher should be without this book!

Book A Guidebook to South Carolina Historical Markers

Download or read book A Guidebook to South Carolina Historical Markers written by and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2021-02-19 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Carolina Historical Marker Program, established in 1936, has approved the installation of more than 1,700 interpretive plaques, each highlighting how places both grand and unassuming have played important roles in the history of the Palmetto State. These roadside markers identify and interpret places valuable for understanding South Carolina's past, including sites of consequential events and buildings, structures, or other resources significant for their design or their association with institutions or individuals prominent in local, state, or national history. This volume includes a concise history of the South Carolina Historical Marker Program and an overview of the marker application process. For those interested in specific historic periods or themes, the volume features condensed lists of markers associated with broader topics such as the American Revolution, African American history, women's history, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. While the program is administered by the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, most markers are proposed by local organizations that serve as a marker's official sponsor, paying its cost and assuming responsibility for its upkeep. In that sense, this inventory is a record not just of places and subjects that the state has deemed worthy of acknowledgment, but of those that South Carolinians themselves have worked to enshrine.

Book I Come from Bowman Lane

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book I Come from Bowman Lane written by Margaret Ann Gethers Scott, PH D and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-04-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Gethers Scott has been the Ford Family historian since 1996. Here, she first offers a wealth of information about why and how to write one's own family history. She then proceeds to her main subjects, the seven children of her earliest known ancestors, ex-slaves Charles Ford and Rebecca Small Ford. The parents and children were all born in the 1800s. Margaret, born in 1946, is the granddaughter of Tom, the youngest of those seven children. Charles and Rebecca are placed in the historical context of Emancipation and Reconstruction in the African American community in South Carolina, where the author still lives. In telling the stories of The Big 7 and their very numerous descendants, much general history of the area in the early and mid-20th century is interwoven with more personal anecdotes. Many of those are humorous, and all of them are vividly narrated. There are long lists of the descendants' names, and there is well-earned acknowledgment of their impressive accomplishments in many fields: music, the military, education, business, diverse trades, and more. Some sections present fascinating snapshots of culture, detailing things such as typical foods of the area, quilting traditions, yellowware pottery, and time-tested construction techniques. Naturally, in addition to the uplifting stories of hard work, family unity, and perseverance, there are some painful stories of prejudice and tragedy. As is only right, there is no whitewashing of history here. But at the close of the book, as the author obviously intended, the reader is left with a wonderful, over-arching impression of warmth, as beautiful and comforting as an heirloom quilt.
