Book The Early History of Roscommon County

Download or read book The Early History of Roscommon County written by W. Tudor and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Early History of Roscommon County - This book is a vehicle for time travel to the earliest days of Roscommon County, Michigan - a place of woods, water and wildlife in north central Michigan. The book describes the county and provides an account of its history from the beginning of time to the end of the 19th century, a mere 25 years after the remote area was first settled. The economic engine that ignited interest and settlement of the area was white pine; green gold for those who had the skills and ingenuity to harvest it. In a period so brief that the imagination is stretched, a booming logging business skimmed the dense forests of their treasure leaving behind undulating fields of tree stumps and brush. The lumberjacks who did the work and the businessmen who managed it are the subject of close scrutiny in the book since they were the heart and soul of the county in its earliest days and most of the county's current street and place names reflect their earlier presence. This book is for those who value the history of Michigan and its colorful past in the logging era.

Book County Roscommon Ireland genealogy and family history notes

Download or read book County Roscommon Ireland genealogy and family history notes written by Michael C. O'Laughlin and published by Irish Roots Cafe. This book was released on 2003 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Help Finding Your Family in County Roscommon This illustrated, well indexed book, was created exclusively to help you find your family in County Roscommon, Ireland. Focusing specifically on families within the county, it includes an introduction to research and sources in Roscommon. The most numerous families from birth records are given, as well as rather rare Roscommon families found in heraldic records. Included you will find a full page county map from the Atlas of Ireland, along with a listing of modern parishes and old townlands, along with the address and location of records for more research. Published by the Irish Genealogical Foundation, this book was originally made for members researching in Roscommon. What this book does This work includes copies of actual records (some worn, torn and faded), from the IGF Library. It also includes rough sketches of family coats of arms and notes from centuries past - seldom found elsewhere. The resources provided here will help research any family in the county, including old Irish families, and settler families from England, Scotland, Wales and the continent. This book is a hands on guide for finding your family in Roscommon- some family history is included - but it is not a gigantic collection of family histories . (For that see 'The Book of Irish Families, great & small', the first book in the Irish Families series by O'Laughlin.) The Irish Families Project for Roscommon The Master book to the 29 volume Irish Families series is 'The Book of Irish Families, great & small'. That book gives hundreds of family histories from County Roscommon, and the surrounding areas. " County Roscommon Genealogy and Family History Notes", volume 23 in the series, expands upon that coverage with added families and new resources just for Roscommon. (In this way both books can work together as a set if desired, or they may be used independently for research.) The Most Numerous Families Among the most numerous families here in the 19th century were: MacDermott, Kelly, O'Connor (Conner), Beirne, Regan (Reagan), Flannigan (Flanigan), Connor, McDonagh (MacDonough), Quinn (Quin), Murray, Brennan, Higgins, Towey (Tuohey), Kenny and Flynn (Flinn).. Among the many other noted families of Roscommon were Hayes, (Hays) McAneeny (MacAniny), Mc Dockery, Gormley (Gormly) and Duignan. The major towns of Roscommon included Strokestown, Boyle, and Castlerea......

Book For Ireland and Freedom Roscommon and the fight for Independence 1917 1921

Download or read book For Ireland and Freedom Roscommon and the fight for Independence 1917 1921 written by Micheal O'Callaghan and published by Mercier Press Ltd. This book was released on 2012-08-03 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic text, first published in 1964, opens with an account of the victory of Count Plunkett, father of the executed 1916 leader, Joseph Plunkett, in the February 1917 bye-election in North Roscommon. This was the first opportunity the Irish people had to show their support for the ideals of the 1916 leaders electorally. The book concludes with an account of the asassination of Seargent King of the "Castlerea Murder Gang" of the Black and Tans on the morning of the truce in July 1921. In between it details raids, ambushes, reprisals and escapes at Rockingham, Ballymote, Knockcroghery, Ballaghadrreen, Teevnacreeva, Ballinlough, Frenchpark, Fouremilehouse, Carrick-on-Shannon, Elphin, Keadue, Scramogue, Loughglynn, Athlone and Boyle. It tells the story of key figures in the area such as Fr. Michael O'Flanagan, Paddy Moran, Fr. Malachy Brennan, Joe Tormey and the many brigades and companies of the North and South Roscommon Volunteer battalions and the neighbouring counties with which they worked. It also looks back to the county's Fenian heritage in the figure of Ned Duffy.

Book excerpt: The history of Roscommon in the 1912-23 period is one of transition to new political allegiances while retaining old economic desires. Almost wholly dependent on agriculture to fuel the local economy and sustain the county's people, the fight for land was the ever-present backdrop to Roscommon's recent history. By 1912 the organization that had provided leadership in that fight - the Irish Parliamentary Party - was on the cusp of achieving Irish home rule, a measure believed to have the potential to settle the land issue. The need to protect the bill saw thousands in Roscommon join the Irish Volunteers and proclaim their opposition to anti-home rule unionists. The First World War led to the suspension of home rule and a call by Irish MPs for their followers to support the British war effort. However, a combination of increasing wartime prices, inadequate food production, ongoing land issues as well as the toleration of partition by local MPs and the draconian British response to Easter 1916 caused many in Roscommon to reassess their political allegiance. Sensationally, in February 1917, Roscommon elected the first Sinn Fein-backed MP. This proved a decisive step in the demise of the Irish Parliamentary Party and the success of Sinn Fein, which reinvigorated the fight for the land as part of its efforts for a republic. In 1919, Roscommon men took up arms against the British to pursue Sinn Fein aims, only to turn the weapons on one another three years later when conflict over the continued pursuit of the Irish Republic led to civil war. In tracing the history of Roscommon during these years of instability, Burke's careful research has produced a comprehensive and accessible study that illuminates and explains the changes and continuities that defined the period.
