Few of our children are acquainted with the heroic history of our forefathers in the Mississippi Valley. They can tell of the struggles and accomplishments of the colonists on the Atlantic seaboard, but they have heard little of the greater struggles by which our own section of the United States was wrested from the wilderness. The epic story of this life of our pioneers is about to be presented in dramatic form in the "Pageant and Masque of St. Louis," for the purpose of arousing our people to pride in the glorious past and to unison of effort in the early accomplishment of yet greater things in the future. This prose story of old days in St. Louis is issued in furtherance of that purpose. As a fitting and interesting introduction to the story of the work of St. Louis', we have devoted the first two chapters of the "Sketches" to the history of the locality which has been the scene of her activity. The first chapter deals with the aborigines, the ancient Nipmucks, and tells of their character, mode of life and the events which led practically to their extermination. It is worthy of note that the original parish of St. Louis', extending from Palmer eastward to Worcester, and from Barre and Spencer on the north and southerly into Connecticut - thus covering the southern central part of the state - embraced by far the greater part of the Nipmuck country. The second chapter tells of the passing of the land of the Nipmucks into the hands of the colonists, and the settlement of our section of the Nipmuck country. The work then takes up the appearance of Catholics on the scene, and their efforts to establish a parish - efforts which were at last crowned with success. The origin of the parish and its growth under the three pastors it has known during the fifty years of its existence are then given. This portion of the work contains life sketches and pictures of the priests who labored here before the establishment of the parish, of the three pastors of St. Louis', and of all the assistants who have ever been located here. Logan, then United States senator, Of the bill for the erection Of the finely equipped Army and Navy Hospital now in Operation on the government reservation at Hot Springs. In addition to his efforts in exploiting the section Mr. Fordyce aided in financing the leading hotels, opera house, water, gas and electric light works, street rail road system and other public enterprises and also financed and had constructed the first cotton compress at Dallas and at Dennison, Texas. Though such an active factor in advancing the welfare Of Arkansas, Mr. Fordyce found opportunity to broaden his Operations and soon became identified with the building and Operation Of a great network Of railroads in the south and southwest. The number of important enterprises which claimed his attention is a significant index to the ability and forceful character of the man. The greater part Of the St. Louis Southwestern Railway Company was built under the man agement of Mr. Fordyce and for sixteen years he resolutely maintained and developed the property in the face of repeated setbacks, steadily overcoming each Obstacle with the sturdy courage of his Scotch ancestors. Some idea of his labors in this connection may be gained from a recapitulation of his services; vice president and treasurer Of the Texas St. Louis Railway for the three years ending April, 1885, receiver, April, 1885 May, 1886, president Of the same road reorganized under the name Of the St. Louis, Arkansas Texas Railway, from 1886 to 1889; receiver, 18891-1890, president, under the new title of the St. Louis Southwestern Railway Company, from 1890 to 1898.
