Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Days of Thomas Whittemore: An Autobiography; Extending From A. D. 1800 to A. D. 1825 For these purposes, and with these intents, the pages before me had been written. Occasionally, as I had clerical brethren at my house, certain parts of the work had been read, in answer to questions, or as illustrations of points in my past history. For instance, if a brother asked me what led me to contract the habit of preaching without notes, and whether it had been a very difficult thing for me to accomplish, it would have been natural to take him to my library, show him the bulky volume of manu script, and read certain passages therefrom. Then would come the question, What is all this for P What are you going to' do with this book? My answer was, I am going to do nothing with it. I shall leave it here in my library when I die. It is for my family. Then, perhaps, would come suggestions as to its publication, to which I generally replied, That I had not written it with such a purpose; and thus the conversation would end. Book The Papers of Thomas Jefferson Retirement Series Volume 18

Download or read book The Papers of Thomas Jefferson Retirement Series Volume 18 written by Thomas Jefferson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-26 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new definitive volume of the retirement papers of Thomas Jefferson This volume’s 627 documents feature a vast assortment of topics. Jefferson writes of his dread of “a doting old age.” He inserts an anonymous note in the Richmond Enquirer denying that he has endorsed a candidate for the next presidential election, and he publishes two letters in that newspaper under his own name to refute a Federalist claim that he once benefited by overcharging the United States Treasury. Jefferson does not reply to unsolicited letters seeking his opinion on constitutional matters, judicial review, and a call for universal white male suffrage in Virginia. Fearing that it would set a dangerous precedent, he declines appointment as patron of a new society “for the civilisation of the Indians.” Jefferson is also asked to comment on proposed improvements to stoves, lighthouses, telescopes, and navigable balloons. Citing his advanced age and stiffened wrist, he avoids detailed replies and allows his complaint to John Adams about the volume of incoming correspondence to be leaked to the press in hopes that strangers will stop deluging them both with letters. Jefferson approves of the growth of Unitarianism and predicts that “there is not a young man now living in the US. who will not die an Unitarian.”

Book Of Thomas Whittemore D D Classic Reprint

Download or read book Of Thomas Whittemore D D Classic Reprint written by John Greenleaf Adams and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Of Thomas Whittemore, D.D No word of apology or explanation is needed in offering to the public the memoir contained in the following pages. The subject of it was widely known for more than forty years in New England as well as in other parts of our country. He belonged to the Church Universal, and to the Universalist Church especially and emphatically. One who knew him long and intimately, and whose good judgment was unquestioned (Rev. Dr. H. Ballou), pronounced him to have been "the people's man above any other in our denominational history." The author of this memoir can truly say that the writing of it on his part has been a labor of love. He had enjoyed a long fraternal acquaintance with Mr. Whittemore, had profited by his wise counsellings when he most needed them, and had been edified and strengthened in a sympathy of soul enjoyed as a coworker with him in the ministry of the Gospel of Divine Grace. In preparing this memoir for the press, it has been the intention of the writer to present the man and the minister as he was known when living, and as he is remembered by many now that he has passed on. We have aimed to condense the matter in hand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
