This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Days of Christianity, Vol. 1 I complete in these volumes the work which has absorbed such leisure as could be spared from many and onerous duties during the last twelve years. My object has been to furnish English readers with a companion, partly historic and partly expository, to the whole of the New Testament. By attention to the minutest details of the original, by availing myself to the best of my power of the results of modern criticism, by trying to concentrate upon the writings of the Apostles and Evangelists such light as may be derived from Jewish, Pagan, or Christian sources, I have endeavoured to fulfil my ordination vow and to show diligence in such studies as help to the knowledge of the Holy Scriptures. The Life of Christ was intended mainly as a commentary upon the Gospels. It was written in such a form as should reproduce whatever I had been able to learn from the close examination of every word which they contain, and should at the same time set forth the living reality of the scenes recorded. In the Life of St. Paul I wished to incorporate the details of the Acts of the Apostles with such biographical incidents as can be derived from the Epistles of St. Paul; and to take. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Christianity, Vol. 1 You cannot understand the history of the first centuries of Christianity, the phases through which it passed, the heresies which sprang up around it, the changes which 1t underwent, unless you first make yourself acquainted with the anterior or contemporaneous doctrines and religions. Nothing is insulated in the destinies of our race it is by the past that the present is explained and the future un veiled. Most Of the ancient forms of worship seem to be derived from a common origin. You find in that common origin, with some slight exceptions, the same theogonies, the same cosmogonies, the same religious institutions. Mosaism, although distinguished from the rest by the purity Of its conceptions, nevertheless took from them divers ceremonies and ordinances. In the last ages preceding the Christian era the Israelites, brought into contact with other nations by the captivity and by voluntary dispersion, adopted, under the influence of traditions and commentaries of old unknown, opinions which their sacred books do not contain, or at least do not declare in an explicit manner. Christianity in its turn coming, in its earliest days, forth from J udea to establish itself in the midst of polytheistic populations, failed to keep itself free from the influence of that medium, in the degree in which it Spread abroad it borrowed more or less according to the position of each Church or each group of Churches, from their philosophy, their rites, their superstitions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zenon, Vol. 1 of 3: An Historical Narrative of the Early Days of Christianity Our trials in this day are, in proportion to the spread of the Gospel, more acute than those of the early Christians, because the whole word of God is laid before us, and we have less excuse for our sins. Nationally speaking, we have had wonderful mercies shown to us. We have been long free from persecution on account of our Faith. We know not what may be in store for us; we must let patience have its perfect work, and think daily of Him who bore such con tradictions of sinners against their own souls. This book was released on 2016-10-17 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Christian Church, Vol. 1 The ecclesiastical history, of which this first volume, on the Apostolic Age, has just appeared in Germany, and is now presented to the English reader, makes no parade of erudition. But it is the work of an erudite, orthodox, and pious man, as a Professor of Theology. It embodies the well digested results of laborious enquiry; and it is exempt from the faults of many similar compositions. Its small compass makes it accessible. It is no inaccurate, superficial, and trite compilation at second hand. It does not profane the Church by treating its rise and progress as those of a merely human institution. It is neither a dry chro nicle, nor a series of religious biographies. And it is no party work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Christian Church, Vol. 1: The Early Church Corresponding to the two elements in the idea of the Church, it has both an invisible and a visible side. As a life, its hidden spring is the spirit of Christ in the hearts of believers. As a fellowship or brotherhood, it has, Of practical necessity, certain outward bonds of unity. Christ himself appointed such in the authority of the apostles, in the rite of baptism, and in the eucharist. Book The History of Christianity Vol 1 of 3

Download or read book The History of Christianity Vol 1 of 3 written by Henry Hart Milman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Christianity, Vol. 1 of 3: From the Birth of Christ to the Abolition of Paganism in the Roman Empire This new edition of the History of Christianity has been revised throughout. A few passages have been added, chiefly in the notes; a few slightly enlarged. In general, I have not found much, after a period of above twenty years, which I should wish to retract or to modify. Some objection was raised, on the first publication of the work, against the commencement of the History of Christianity with the Life of Christ. I thought then, and still think, that life to be an integral and inseparable part of the History. It appeared to me necessary to the completeness of the History to trace it to its primal origin; to show that the Gospels, our only documentary authorities, offer a clear and distinct relation of that life, with no greater variation than might reasonably be expected from four separate and independent narratives, drawn up by different writers, at different times and places, and by one at least from a different point of view; that this relation accords in every respect with all that we know of the events, circumstances, manners, usages, opinions, of the age and country; that its religious signification, and, in part, supernatural character, in no way conflict, but are, rather, in full and perfect harmony, with its simple truth and reality. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature and History of New Testament Times, Vol. 1: The Historical Background of Christianity, the Early History of Christianity The Teacher's Manual, therefore, is intended not merely to offer suggestions as to methods of teaching, but primarily to sup plement the teacher's knowledge. A teacher who knows only what he actually imparts to the class is inevitably dull. The true teacher brings forth out of his treasure things new and old. The sections in the Teacher's Manual, since they are intended to be supplementary, should not be read until after careful attention has been paid to the corresponding sections in the Student's Text Book. Moreover, both sections together are of course in them selves insufficient. They should be supplemented by other read ing. Suggestions about reading have been put at the end of every lesson. Here, however, a few general remarks may be made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book A Literary History of Early Christianity Vol 1 written by Charles Thomas Cruttwell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Literary History of Early Christianity, Vol. 1: Including the Fathers and the Chief Heretical Writers of the Ante-Nicene Period, for the Use of Students and General Readers The encouraging reception given to my "History of Roman Literature," published in 1877, suggested the extension of the same plan to the more complicated field of the Literature of the early Church. So far as I am aware, there is no English work which exactly covers the same ground; and I hope that the present volume may be found to supply a real want, both for students of theology and for general readers who desire to see for themselves what the first exponents of Christian doctrine after the Apostles believed and taught. Upwards of seven years have been spent in collecting the materials for this work. The original authorities have in all cases been carefully studied, and, in addition, information has been gathered from such of the best known and most recent Church histories, dictionaries, and monographs as were within my reach. Where more than the general outlines of the thought have been borrowed, I have sought in every instance to acknowledge my indebtedness. The purpose I have had in view is mainly literary - that is, I have endeavoured to point out the leading intellectual conceptions which animate the various writers, to indicate the degree of success attained by each, and to estimate the permanent value of each one's contribution to the growing edifice of human thought and knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Christian Church, Vol. 1 The chosen members of the new communion were thus formed into one body, essentially distinguished from the world. A Sign was written upon them which could, not be counterfeited. A circle was described around them which could not be broken. They were before objects of wonder for the miraculous powers they were seen to exercise but now they were still more so, for they had been made the subjects of one great and particularising dispensation. They could not be con founded with the rest of men; they could not be lost sight of by the flowing in of the multitude. There they stood, bowing under the same mighty awe sha dowed by the same encircling glory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A few paragraphs have been added, and many small changes are made, but the general position is unaltered. A few more books are mentioned for further study, but the scholar must be referred for a fuller Bibliography to von Schubert or the new work of Dr. Gustav Kruger (1911). For criticism and advice my best thanks are due to many living friends and to one no longer living, for some of the most helpful notes were sent me by Bishop Collins almost from his deathbed. Book Early History of the Christian Church Vol 1

Download or read book Early History of the Christian Church Vol 1 written by Louis Duchesne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early History of the Christian Church, Vol. 1: From Its Foundation to the End of the Third Century AT the time of Diocletian's persecution, when the churches were destroyed, the sacred books burned, and the Chris tians proscribed, or forced to apostasize, one of their number was quietly working away at the first history of Christianity. His was not a mind of the highest order, but he was patient, hard-working, and conscientious, and during many long years, he had collected materials for his contemplated book. He succeeded in saving these materials from the general shipwreck, and even in turning them to account. Thus Eusebius of Caesarea became the father of ecclesiastical history. And the first duty of those who take up the same task again - so long after, but in days not much less dark - is to recall his name and his incom parable services. But for his unrivalled diligence in search ing through those Palestinian libraries, where the learned Origen and Bishop Alexander had collected the whole Christian literature of early days, our knowledge of the first three centuries of the Church's life would be small indeed. We cannot of course but lament the destruction of these libraries, yet, thanks to him, and to the remark able fragments he preserved, we can appreciate in some measure what they were. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church History of the First Three Centuries, Vol. 1 A desire has existed for some time and in various quarters to have the results which have been emerging from the most recent critical investigations in the field of primitive Church History brought together in a compendious form. And such a work cannot fail to promote the success of these investigations. On this field of historical inquiry, which requires to be again and again, and more and more thoroughly, discussed, there are many points which, when looked at in themselves, appear unimportant or of doubtful certainty, and which can only be seen in their true light when placed in their proper connection in the history, where the unity of the whole supports and holds fast the parts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Christian Doctrine, Vol. 1 This book contains a sketch pf Christian doctrine from the earliest times until the Council of Chalcedon in A.D. 451. By that date the faith of the Church in Jesus Christ was expressed with such clearness that any serious misunderstanding on the subject of His Incarnation was rendered difficult. Some account is also given of the doctrines of the Trinity the Atonement, and the Sacraments, which are so intimately connected with the doctrine of the Incarnation. Brevity has made it necessary to omit many important references and quotations which the writer hopes to incorporate in a larger book on dogmatic theology.
