Jesus and the primitive Church at Jerusalem re semble the images of a far-off paradise, lost in a mysterious mist. On the other hand, the arrival of St Paul at Rome, in consequence of the step the Author of the Acts has taken in closing at that juncture his narrative, marks in the history of Christian origins the commencement of a profound darkness into which the bloody glare of the barbarous feasts of Nero, and the thunders of the Apocalypse, cast only a few gleams. In particular, the death of the Apostles is enveloped in an impenetrable obscurity. On the contrary, the era of the missions of St Paul, especially of the second mission and the third, is known to us through documents of the greatest value. The Acts, till then so legendary, become suddenly quite authentic; the last chapters, com. Posed in part of the narrative of an eye-witness, are the sole complete historical writings which we have of the early times of Christianity. In fine, those years, through a privilege very rare in similar circum stances, provide us with documents, the dates of which are absolutely authentic, and a series of letters, the most important of which have withstood all the tests of criticism, and which have never been sub jected to interpolations. In the introduction to the preceding volume, we have made an ex amination of the Book of Acts. We must now discuss seriatim the different epistles which bear the name of St Paul. The Apostle informs us himself, that even during his lifetime there were in circulation in his name several spurious letters, and he often took precautions to prevent frauds. We are, therefore, only carrying out his intentions in subject ing the writings which have been put forth as his to a rigorous censorship. In a.d. 70, when Jerusalem was destroyed, and all men could see that Judaism and Christianity were detached from one another, the Roman Empire included thirty-six provinces, and stretched from Southern Britain to Armenia. It included London, Cologne, Paris, Cordova, Carthage, Alexandria, Damascus, Smyrna, and the town which we call Constanti nople but which was then named Byzantium. Chester and Lincoln were the two most northerly points held by Roman troops, whose comrades were stationed in Egyptian' towns half as old as time. The Emperor Augustus had in stituted a vast system of political reform to which his successors had generally adhered. Augustus made a united Italy, and stimulated a patriotism for Italy which could not be dissociated from devotion to himself. His name and victories were so continually in the festivals and in the worship of the people, that the measures were com prehended in the man. He bound the middle classes to himself by offering them prefectures and governorships he encouraged guilds which might further the interests of the populace, and while he controlled the power of the aristocratic senate, he consoled its pride with outward splendours. The provinces were prosperous, and though the three immediate successors of Augustus and of his adopted. Son Tiberius were men of inferior calibre, the empire was tranquil and wealthy. Actual misgovernment was rare, irritation against the government was seldom felt, except by half-civilised peoples in the extreme East and North. Spain and Gaul were being rapidly Romanised, and although Asia Minor was more independent of Rome both in its culture and its government, general contentment reigned. Most Of the ancient forms of worship seem to be derived from a common origin. Mosaism, although distinguished from the rest by the purity Of its conceptions, nevertheless took from them divers ceremonies and ordinances. In the last ages preceding the Christian era the Israelites, brought into contact with other nations by the captivity and by voluntary dispersion, adopted, under the influence of traditions and commentaries of old unknown, opinions which their sacred books do not contain, or at least do not declare in an explicit manner. Christianity in its turn coming, in its earliest days, forth from J udea to establish itself in the midst of polytheistic populations, failed to keep itself free from the influence of that medium, in the degree in which it Spread abroad it borrowed more or less according to the position of each Church or each group of Churches, from their philosophy, their rites, their superstitions.
