Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Church I. When the word church, or in Greek, ecclesia, first meets us in the New Testament, it is already a Biblical word with an established meaning. Naturally we read into the word all the associations which have gathered round it in the course of the Christian centuries and it is quite legitimate to do so, for the oak is implicit in the acorn. But it is well, before reading into the word what the future elicited from it, to grasp firmly what the past had contributed to it. Book Vital Forces of the Early Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book Vital Forces of the Early Church Classic Reprint written by Harry Angus Alexander Kennedy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-17 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vital Forces of the Early Church It was inevitable that in the late traditions embodied in Acts the power should be associated with miracles and marvels. But any penetrating reader can discern that what really counted in the primitive community was the abnormal endowment for Spiritual situations. So that it is not going beyond the evidence to say that the early Christians soon began to feel their call to victory. From their intimate knowledge of Jesus they believed that this was the Divine purpose. Hence they never hesitated to become fellow-workers with God. The outcome of this equipment in their daily thought and feeling was enthusiasm. So much is plain from the opening chapters of Acts, corroborated by many passages in the Epistles. It is unfortunate that attention has been turned aside from the more general features of the community to such more or less accidental details as the sale of their goods by individuals and the contribution of the proceeds to a common fund. The important feature in the famous story of Ananias and Sapphira is not the terrible penalty represented as falling upon them suddenly, but the high standard of Christian morality which the story presupposes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biography of the Early Church In every department of the history of the objects of human study, there is some critical point at which the mind of the reader is suddenly struck with the novel view presented to it, and pushes forward with that impatient interest which is excited by the first apprehension of the unravelling of a well-constructed plot in a play or story. What a scene for instance is opened at once to him who investigates the his tory of moral philosophy, when he bursts upon the period when Socrates changed the whole aim of Greek research by calling it down from airy specu lations on the nature of the Deity to substantial considerations on the duties of man! Or to him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Characteristics of the Early Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book Characteristics of the Early Church Classic Reprint written by John J. Burke and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Characteristics of the Early Church Certain non-Catholics are just now making strong claims to Apostolic succession. On this account many are anxious to study the teachings and practices of the early church. Those unable to consult the writings of the Fathers in the original, or such works as Waterworth's Faith of Catholics and reliable church histories will, perhaps, be interested in this brief study of early Christian life. It will, it is hoped, give those not having leisure to consult more bulky volumes, a fair idea of the propagation, organization, writers, teachings, trials and triumphs of the early church. The primary object, however, of the following pages is to show as briefly and clearly as possible that the teachings and practices of the Catholic Church of to-day are identical with those of the Early Church. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Reading in the Early Church All that need be said of the interest and importance of the question of the use of the Holy Scriptures in the Early Church has been set forth in the Introduction. The History of the New Testament includes not only the history of its versions in various languages, but also the history of its use. Again, the history of the use is also, in its first stages at least, included in the subject of Introduction to the New Testament, because the question in what sense the collection of writings known as the New Testament was regarded as a Canon of religion is not decided by saying that it was regarded as canonical, but can only be answered by finding out what use was actually made of this collection. No objection, there fore, can be raised against our including the following investigation in our New Testament Studies, which deal. Download or read book Heroes of the Early Church Classic Reprint written by Richard Newton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of the Early Church These graphic sketches of the "Heroes of the Early Church" are the latest series penned by the distinguished author, whom Spurgeon fittingly called "The Prince of Children's Preachers." The sketches are in many respects the best work of the gifted man. As he ripened in saintship for heaven, his literary style became even more rich with the aroma of the gospel, and so more forcible, simple and crisp than in his earlier writings. The articles were originally prepared for The Youth's World, and were issued in that periodical. The revision and preparation of them for publication in this form has been an easy and delightful task. Indeed, so carefully did Dr. Newton prepare his copy for the press that little was required to be done beyond the omission of some repetitions of statement, necessarily incident to serial articles in a periodical. Dr. Newton had planned another series on the "Heroes of the Modern Church," to follow these, but was compelled by ill health to give up writing them. Yet he continued to work so diligently that the last article from his pen was written for the number of The Youth's World which appeared the month after his death.
