Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Chronicles Relating to Scotland The following lectures were undertaken with the intention and hope of furnishing a clue to the most trustworthy sources of contemporary, or nearly contemporary, information about the early condition and history of Scotland, and of indicating the most probable line of truth among conflicting statements. Some such guidance may be found acceptable by those who, while desiring to acquire a clear general knowledge of the origin of the Scottish people and their relations with England, have not enough leisure at command for prolonged search through the printed volumes of annals and to weigh the authority which may rightly be assigned to each. Download or read book The History and Chronicles of Scotland Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Hector Boece and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Chronicles of Scotland, Vol. 1 HE early part of the Literary History of Scotland is involved in much ob scurity, and has not been investigated with a due share either of care or of candour. Many eminent writers who adorned the reigns of the Stuarts du ring the fifteenth and sixteenth centu ries, are now in a great measure unknown or forgotten. The difficulties these early writers had to encounter, from the limited sources of information which they possessed, - the absence of authentic records to guide them in their researches, - the romantic and fabulous times of which they wrote, - and the want of science to operate as a check up on credulity, seem entirely to have escaped those critics by whom their labours have been depreciated, and their claims to the gratitude of posterity denied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chronicle of the War Between the English and the Scots in 1173 and 1174 The metrical chronicle, which we publish here for the first time, has reference to the war which Henry II sustained against his eldest son, and chiefly against William the Lion, king of Scotland, in 1173 and 1174. Before we speak of the poem itself, of its author, and of the manuscripts wherein it is reserved, we beg'leave to say a few words concerning t e events which he has related, although there are many accounts of them in the general histories of England, and more especially in those of the reign of Henry II'. Book Early Scottish Metrical Tales Classic Reprint

Download or read book Early Scottish Metrical Tales Classic Reprint written by David Laing and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Scottish Metrical Tales The Metrical Tales and Romance Poems peculiar to this Country, are very inconsiderable in number, when compared with those which belong to the Sister-Kingdom. But from various allusions to be found to the number and popularity of such compositions in Scotland, at an early period, it is evident that this portion of our Ancient Literature, in its transmission to modern times, must have suffered in a more than common degree. Nor indeed was it to be conceived, at the time "Quhen gude Makars rang weill into Scotland," that our native Minstrels should have been behind their neighbours, either for invention, or facility of composition, in thus contributing to the amusement of their countrymen. In proof of the general esteem in which these works of fiction were held, it may here be sufficient to mention what has been incidentally recorded of two of the most renowned of the Scotish Mouarchs. When the followers of Robert the Bruce, in his retreat to the Isle of Rachrin, at the close of the year 1306, had to be ferried over Lochlomoud in a boat, which held but three persons at a time, that "gude King," is said, by his venerable biographer, to have amused them for "a night and a day," by reading portions of the Romance of Ferumbrace.
