This is what this book is about—a good look at the fertile soil we need to plant our lives in; at the anchor that can secure us amid a sea of superficiality and the winds of destructive changes. Here are stories of people who tried what they thought would make them complete and fulfilled, only to find themselves wanting more. And in their emptiness and brokenness, they discovered what’s real. Come, join me in this pursuit of the business of living. It is my prayer that as you read these stories, you will be inspired to make your own journey in search of the real thing and discover what really matters above all else.
Download or read book Mystery of the Eucharist written by Hilary Arthur Nixon PhD and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2022-10-07 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Christ did not enter a holy place made by hands, a mere copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us; nor was it that He would offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year by year with blood that is not his own. Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been revealed to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. Hebrews 9:24–25 NASB Jesus interrupted their Seder meal, celebrating Passover. Using unleavened bread and a cup of wine, he instituted the Lord’s Supper. Why does the bread represent Christ’s body? God passes over the believer’s sin because the Lamb of God’s body carried our sin. He suffered and died. His body was broken, like bread. What represents His death? Life is with the blood. Life ceases when blood stops pouring out of the sacrifice. Wine represents Christ’s blood. Wine poured into the cup represents his death. The cup Jesus used probably was a wooden bowl. What cup represents the new covenant? Once a year on the Day of Atonement, the high priest entered the Holy of Holies. With his finger, he sprinkled blood from the bowl onto the mercy seat. Seven times he did this. This ritual shows God’s intent to cleanse sin from his people. In the heavenly temple, Jesus, the Christ, cleansed us from sin. By showing His blood, He showed his death on our behalf. The cup is only a tiny piece of the new covenant’s inauguration ritual. Yet the cup represents the entire new covenant relationship between God and his people. This figure of speech is a synecdoche, where a part represents the whole. It is a specialized form of metonym.

Download or read book Once Upon an Algorithm written by Martin Erwig and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-08-09 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This easy-to-follow introduction to computer science reveals how familiar stories like Hansel and Gretel, Sherlock Holmes, and Harry Potter illustrate the concepts and everyday relevance of computing. Picture a computer scientist, staring at a screen and clicking away frantically on a keyboard, hacking into a system, or perhaps developing an app. Now delete that picture. In Once Upon an Algorithm, Martin Erwig explains computation as something that takes place beyond electronic computers, and computer science as the study of systematic problem solving. Erwig points out that many daily activities involve problem solving. Getting up in the morning, for example: You get up, take a shower, get dressed, eat breakfast. This simple daily routine solves a recurring problem through a series of well-defined steps. In computer science, such a routine is called an algorithm. Erwig illustrates a series of concepts in computing with examples from daily life and familiar stories. Hansel and Gretel, for example, execute an algorithm to get home from the forest. The movie Groundhog Day illustrates the problem of unsolvability; Sherlock Holmes manipulates data structures when solving a crime; the magic in Harry Potter’s world is understood through types and abstraction; and Indiana Jones demonstrates the complexity of searching. Along the way, Erwig also discusses representations and different ways to organize data; “intractable” problems; language, syntax, and ambiguity; control structures, loops, and the halting problem; different forms of recursion; and rules for finding errors in algorithms. This engaging book explains computation accessibly and shows its relevance to daily life. Something to think about next time we execute the algorithm of getting up in the morning.

Download or read book 5 000 Great One Liners written by Grant Tucker and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09-25 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My mate told me that I just don't understand irony. Which was ironic because we were at a bus stop at the time. A dyslexic man walks into a bra. An onion just told me a joke. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. A priest, a rabbi and a blind man walk into a bar and the bartender says, 'What is this, some kind of joke?' I got chatting to a lumberjack in a pub. He seemed like a decent feller. I'll never forget what my granddad said to me just before he kicked the bucket. He said, 'Grandson, how far do you think I can kick this bucket?' Whether told in the rugby clubs of Wales or the gentlemen's clubs of London, their sharpness and simplicity unites us all. Short, sweet and wickedly clever, they hold a special place in the annals of comedy, and as the Twitter age heralds a resurrection of the art form, there seems no better time to celebrate the immortal one-liner. In this riveting read, Times diary columnist Grant Tucker does just that, bringing together 5,000 of the funniest one-liners ever told in one definitive volume. Laugh-out-loud funny, 5,000 Great One-Liners has all the quips, zingers, puns and wisecracks you'll ever need - and a whole lot more.

Book excerpt: Billy Winston’s family is going to see him happy and in love if it’s the last thing they do. No one deserves a happily-ever-after quite as much as the second oldest Winston brother and his lady love, Claire McClure (aka Scarlet St. Claire). Cruelty and circumstance tore them apart almost twenty years ago. Secrecy and bitterness kept them separated. But you know who’s tired of their separation and stubbornness? Everyone. Especially Billy Winston’s family. And now they’re going to do something about it. Well-meaning interference means the star-crossed lovers can’t stop tripping over each other in the hills of Tuscany, the catacombs of Rome, and the waterways of Venice. Billy and Claire find themselves thrown together and at the mercy of the Winston siblings’ shenanigans. But will their forced proximity bring them together? Or push them even further apart? This second-chance romance brings back the entire Winston gang, playing cupid in one last story of love, hi-jinks, and family collusion. BEARD NECESSITIES is a full-length contemporary romantic comedy, and can be read as a stand-alone, but it’s probably best read after books 0.5, 2, 3, 5, and 6 of the Winston Brothers series.
Download or read book But the one who written by Job Mothiba and published by Tektime. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to Christians and non-Christians for salvation, daily motivation, inspiration and devotion. I have realised that some people get to Christ at some point then, go back to the world because of the inability to stand firm to their faith in the Lord. Thus, one must realize that in this last days difficult times are still to come. Many people will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, unfeeling, uncooperative, slanderous, degenerate, brutal, hateful of what is good, traitors, reckless, conceited, and lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. They will hold to an outward form of godliness but deny its power. So, because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. I encourage people to hold on to the confession of their hope without wavering, for He (God) who promised (salvation) is faithful. Translator: Job Mothiba PUBLISHER: TEKTIME
Download or read book Geary s Guide to the World s Great Aphorists written by James Geary and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2008-12-08 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both an expert and a collector, James Geary has devoted his life to aphorisms-and the last few years to organizing, indexing, and even translating them. The result is Geary's Guide, featuring aphorists like Voltaire, Twain, Shakespeare, Nietzsche, Woody Allen, Muhammad Ali, Emily Dickinson, and Mae West, as well as international practitioners appearing in English for the first time. But it is more than just a conventional anthology. It is also an encyclopedia, containing brief biographies of each author in addition to a selection of his or her aphorisms. The book is a field guide, too, with aphorists organized into eight different "species," such as Comics, Critics & Satirists; Icons & Iconoclasts; and Painters & Poets. The book's two indexes-by author and by subject-make it easily searchable, while its unique organizational structure and Geary's lively biographical entries set it apart from all previous reference works. A perfect follow-up to Geary's New York Times bestseller The World in a Phrase, Geary's Guide is eminently suitable for browsing or for sustained reading. A comprehensive guide to our most intimate, idiosyncratic literary form, the book is an indispensable tool for writers and public speakers as well as essential reading for all language lovers.
