Book A People s History of London

Download or read book A People s History of London written by Lindsey German and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2012-06-19 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the eyes of Britain’s heritage industry, London is the traditional home of empire, monarchy and power, an urban wonderland for the privileged, where the vast majority of Londoners feature only to applaud in the background. Yet, for nearly 2000 years, the city has been a breeding ground for radical ideas, home to thinkers, heretics and rebels from John Wycliffe to Karl Marx. It has been the site of sometimes violent clashes that changed the course of history: the Levellers’ doomed struggle for liberty in the aftermath of the Civil War; the silk weavers, match girls and dockers who crusaded for workers’ rights; and the Battle of Cable Street, where East Enders took on Oswald Mosley’s Black Shirts. A People’s History of London journeys to a city of pamphleteers, agitators, exiles and revolutionaries, where millions of people have struggled in obscurity to secure a better future.

Book London s Population and the 2011 Census

Download or read book London s Population and the 2011 Census written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. London Regional Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The London Regional Committee warns that preparations for the 2011 Census risk a repeat of the difficulties of the 2001 Census, where the population of several London boroughs was seriously undercounted. The acknowledged undercounting of London's population in the 2001 Census continues to have an effect on the funding provided to London's boroughs for the services they are expected to provide for the capital's population. The report welcomes improvements which have been made to arrangements for the conduct of the 2011 Census and acknowledges that substantial lessons have been learned from the 2001 exercise. However, the MPs raise concerns that these preparations will not be enough to boost the number of census forms delivered, completed and collected in the capital to acceptable response levels. The Committee callS on the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to address potential problems with recruitment of skilled enumerators with the local knowledge required to ensure the successful delivery and collection of as many Census forms as possible. The MPs also recommend that ONS discusses with London boroughs the methods it proposes to use to calculate final Census figures and estimate missing returns, in order to share expertise on the particular population profiles in each borough.

Book excerpt: People Under Three translates child development theory and research into everyday practice. Focussing on the group day care of very young children, it is designed specifically for those who look after them day by day, as well as policy makers, administrators and the managers of child care services. All the practical ideas in the book have been developed and tested in nurseries and family centres. They include detailed guidance on educational play for babies and toddlers and how to care for children's emotional needs. The book also explores the difficult area of child protection and working with parents and children with a variety of problems. People Under Three is an established text for all those training to work with young children or managing day care facilities. This new edition has been completely updated to take account of the expansion and radical changes which have taken place in child care provision since the book was first published and includes new chapters on assessing the quality of care and short-term and intermittent care.
