Download or read book The E S C Quarterly Vol 13 written by M. R. Dunnagan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The E. S. C. Quarterly, Vol. 13: Winter-Spring, 1955 Milk, as well as other dairy products, is produced and processed on a commercial basis in nearly all areas. Several large creamery and dairy enterprises operate one or more branch plants. The same is true in canning and preserving fruits and vegetables. Much of the produce raised in North Carolina is shipped to other locations; therefore, even if a re gion grows large amounts of a particular fruit or vegetable, the processing or packing is not necessar ily done in that area. Milling operations are Widely scattered; nearly all counties supporting an establishment. Baking plants also show a wide distribution. Large candy producers are concentrated generally in metropolitan areas. The beverage industry is distributed accord ing to population as are the ice plants serving the manufacturer and consumer. These industries require thousands of workers; workers Who are able to feed others, and thereby earn wages to feed themselves. As North Carolina becomes more self-sustaining by expanding process ing facilities, thousands of other workers should be afforded employment. Book The Politics of Language and Nation Building in Zimbabwe

Download or read book The Politics of Language and Nation Building in Zimbabwe written by Finex Ndhlovu and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the exclusion of minority languages (and their speakers) from the mainstream domains of everyday social life in postcolonial Zimbabwe. It considers forces of hegemonic nation building, subtle cultural oppression and a desire for linguistic uniformity as major factors contributing to the social exclusion of Zimbabweans from language groups other than Shona and Ndebele. The book interprets the various forms of language-based exclusion exercised by Shona and Ndebele language speakers over minority groups as constituting a form of linguistic imperialism. Contrary to the popular view that English is Zimbabwe's «killer language», which should be replaced by selected indigenous languages that are perceived as more nationally «authentic» and better grounded in both pre- and post-imperial frameworks, this book argues that linguistic imperialism has very little to do with whether the dominating language is «foreign» or «indigenous». The author discusses oral submissions from minority language speakers, language experts, policy-makers and educators. While the focus is specifically on the politics of language and identity in Zimbabwe, this case study gives an insight into the complexity of identity and nation building in postcolonial Africa.

Book The Making of Indian Diplomacy

Download or read book The Making of Indian Diplomacy written by Deep K. Datta-Ray and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-21 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diplomacy is conventionally understood as an authentic European invention which was internationalised during colonialism. For Indians, the moment of colonial liberation was a false dawn because the colonised had internalised a European logic and performed European practices. Implicit in such a reading is the enduring centrality of Europe to understanding Indian diplomacy. This Eurocentric discourse renders two possibilities impossible: that diplomacy may have Indian origins and that they offer un-theorised potentialities. Abandoning this Eurocentric model of diplomacy, Deep Datta-Ray recognises the legitimacy of independent Indian diplomacy and brings new practices He creates a conceptual space for Indian diplomacy to exist, forefronting civilisational analysis and its focus on continuities, but refraining from devaluing transformational change.

Book Debunking the Myths of Colonization

Download or read book Debunking the Myths of Colonization written by Samar Attar and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2010 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debunking the Myths of Colonization examines Salman Rushdi's thesis on the paradoxical nature of colonialism and its horrific impact on the psyche of the colonized. It probes Frantz Fanon's theories concerning the relationship between colonizers and colonized, and attempts to apply these theories to modern Arabic literature. Like Rushdi and Fanon, many Arab writers have embarked on a journey to the metropolis of their ex-colonial masters. Due to their encounter with English or French culture, they have written memoirs, poems, or fictions in which they have represented themselves and the 'other.' Their representations differ markedly according to their own make up as human beings, their class, education, experiences, and gender. Yet what brings them together is their love-hate relationship with the ex-colonizer. In the case of the Palestinian writers, however, there is only bitterness and bewilderment at Israel as a colonizing power in the 21st century and its Jewish citizens, who were once victims in Europe but now have turned into victimizers. Book Rapture Culture

    Book Details:
  • Author : Amy Johnson Frykholm
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2004-03-04
  • ISBN : 0198036221

Download or read book Rapture Culture written by Amy Johnson Frykholm and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-03-04 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the "twinkling of an eye" Jesus secretly returns to earth and gathers to him all believers. As they are taken to heaven, the world they leave behind is plunged into chaos. Cars and airplanes crash and people search in vain for loved ones. Plagues, famine, and suffering follow. The antichrist emerges to rule the world and to destroy those who oppose him. Finally, Christ comes again in glory, defeats the antichrist and reigns over the earth. This apocalyptic scenario is anticipated by millions of Americans. These millions have made the Left Behind series--novels that depict the rapture and apocalypse--perennial bestsellers, with over 40 million copies now in print. In Rapture Culture, Amy Johnson Frykholm explores this remarkable phenomenon, seeking to understand why American evangelicals find the idea of the rapture so compelling. What is the secret behind the remarkable popularity of the apocalyptic genre? One answer, she argues, is that the books provide a sense of identification and communal belonging that counters the "social atomization" that characterizes modern life. This also helps explain why they appeal to female readers, despite the deeply patriarchal worldview they promote. Tracing the evolution of the genre of rapture fiction, Frykholm notes that at one time such narratives expressed a sense of alienation from modern life and protest against the loss of tradition and the marginalization of conservative religious views. Now, however, evangelicalism's renewed popular appeal has rendered such themes obsolete. Left Behind evinces a new embrace of technology and consumer goods as tools for God's work, while retaining a protest against modernity's transformation of traditional family life. Drawing on extensive interviews with readers of the novels, Rapture Culture sheds light on a mindset that is little understood and far more common than many of us suppose.

Book Economic Social and Cultural Rights in International Law

Download or read book Economic Social and Cultural Rights in International Law written by Eibe Riedel and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-03-13 with total page 2883 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen a remarkable expansion in the scale and importance of economic, social, and cultural rights (ESC rights), culminating in the adoption of the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in December 2008. The Protocol gives individuals and groups the ability to bring complaints about rights violations before the UN Committee on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights. Against this background, this book focuses on the question of how fundamental socio-economic human rights enshrined in international law are defined, interpreted, understood, and implemented. It assesses how effective efforts to realize ESC rights have been and investigates the contemporary challenges obstructing their protection. It sets out the impact of the global financial crisis and austerity measures, the human rights responsibilities of corporations, and trends in the justiciability of those rights at the national and international level. The interrelationship between ESC rights and other legal regimes such as trade and investment law, environmental law, international criminal law, and international humanitarian law is also thoroughly examined. After an introduction by the editors the book contains seventeen chapters looking at the main questions which shape the progressive realization of ESC rights and their monitoring mechanisms. The authors of the chapters, both scholars and practitioners, adopt interdisciplinary approaches that move beyond traditional analyses of ESC rights. In doing so, they clarify and illuminate multiple aspects of the law by bringing together the different aspects of ESC rights, restating the challenges they face, and assessing the progress that has been made in expanding their adoption.

Book Troilus and Cressida A Critical Reader

Download or read book Troilus and Cressida A Critical Reader written by Efterpi Mitsi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Troilus and Cressida: A Critical Reader offers an accessible and thought-provoking guide to this complex problem play, surveying its key themes and evolving critical preoccupations. Considering its generic ambiguity and experimentalism, it also provides a uniquely detailed and up-to-date history of the play's stage performance from Dryden's rewriting up to Mark Ravenhill and Elizabeth LeCompte's controversial 2012 production for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Wooster Group. Moving through to four new critical essays, the guide opens up fresh perspectives on the play's iconoclastic nature and its key themes, ranging from issues of gender and sexuality to Elizabethan politics, from the uses of antiquity to questions of cultural translation, with particular attention paid on Troilus' “Greekness”. The volume finishes with a helpful guide to critical and web-based resources. Discussing the ways in which this challenging and acerbic play can be brought to life in the classroom, it suggests performance-based strategies, designed to engage with the dramaturgical and theatrical dimensions of the text; close-reading exercises with an emphasis on rhetoric, metaphor and the practice of “troping”; and a series of tools designed to situate the play in a range of contexts, including its classical and critical frameworks.
