Book excerpt: The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve has captured the worldwide attention of biologists, conservationists, and ecologists and has been the setting for extensive investigation over the past 30 years. Roughly 40,000 ecotourists visit the Cloud Forest each year, and it is often considered the archetypal high-altitude rain forest. This volume brings together some of the most prominent researchers of the region to provide a broad introduction to the biology of the Monteverde, and cloud forests in general. Collecting and synthesizing vital information about the ecosystem and its biota, the book also examines the positive and negative effects of human activity on both the forest and the surrounding communities. Ecologists, tropical biologists, and natural historians will find this volume an indispensable resource, as will all those who are fascinated by the magnificent wonders of the tropical forests.

Book Phylogenetic Analysis of the Scarab Beetle Tribe Cyclocephalini Coleoptera

Download or read book Phylogenetic Analysis of the Scarab Beetle Tribe Cyclocephalini Coleoptera written by Daniel R. Clark and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scarab beetle tribe Cyclocephalini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae) includes 15 genera and approximately 500 species that are distributed primarily in the New World. Species in the group are important pollinators of aroids, palms, and lilies, some are agricultural pests, and a few are invasive in areas where they have been introduced. Evolutionary relationships of the group have not been examined, and monophyly of the tribe and relationships of genera have not been addressed. As a result, the classification remains unstable, and there is no foundation with which to interpret evolutionary patterns. To provide an evolutionary framework, a phylogenetic analysis using 77 adult morphological characters was performed. Representatives from all recognized cyclocephaline genera were examined as well as taxa that have historically been included in the tribe. Outgroups included exemplars from the dynastine tribes Oryctini, Oryctoderini, and Pentodontini and the ruteline tribes Anomalini and Rutelini. Based on the analysis, Cyclocephalini, as currently circumscribed, does not constitute a monophyletic lineage. Thus, the current classification does not reflect evolution, and revision is required. Based on strong character support, the genera Eriocelis and Stenocrates are not a part of the new cyclocephaline clade while genera Parapucaya and Neohyphus are members of the new Cyclocephalini.

Book Scarab Beetles Coleoptera Scarabaeidae of South Carolina

Download or read book Scarab Beetles Coleoptera Scarabaeidae of South Carolina written by Phillip J. Harpootlian and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the introduction, Harpootlian states, ?This manual is intended primarily as a guide for identifying adult scarabs of South Carolina.? Scarab beetles of South Carolina covers what North Americans traditionally call ?scarabs,? omitting the scarabaeoid families Lucanidae and Passalidae. The book begins with a brief introduction to scarabs, the ecological regions of South Carolina, a scarab illustration with body parts labeled, and a checklist of species. Then it presents keys allowing the user to identify any species known to occur in South Carolina. The entire book is packed with varied illustrations of taxa and distinguishing characteristics which help make the keys user friendly. There is even a glossary of terms to aid the user. Most of the text is devoted to individual species accounts. These accounts are brief and include a synonymy, diagnosis, biology or comments, and distributions. Considering the fascinating biologies of some scarabs, the species accounts appear too brief. For many, however, that is the state of our knowledge. - from BioOne Complete review.
