In this connection there has been a rapidly growing interest in real fluid effects on wave phenomena in the past few years. A prominent example is provided by Bethe-Zel'dovich-Thompson (BZT) fluids which have the distinguishing feature that they exhibit negative nonlinearity over a finite range of temperature and pressures in the pure vapour phase. However, two phase flows with and without phase change are an even richer source of new unexpected and previously thought impossible phenomena. Topics covered by this volume include waves in gases near the critical point, waves in retrograde fluids, temperature waves in superfluid helium and density waves in suspensions of particles in liquids. Clearly, the aim of the various contributions is twofold. First, they are intended to provide scientists and engineers working in these and related areas with an overview of various new physical phenomena as for example expansion shocks, sonic shocks, shock splitting, evaporation and liquafaction shocks and the experimental techniques needed to study these phenomena. Book excerpt: Various nanoclusters and microparticles are considered in excited and ionized gases, as well as various processes with their participation. The concepts of these processes were developed 50 - 100 years ago mostly for dense media, and basing on these concepts, we analyze these processes in gases in two opposite regimes, so that in the kinetic regime surrounding atoms of a buffer gas do not partake in processesinvolving small particles, and the diffusion regime corresponds to a dense gas where interaction of small particles with a buffer gas subjects to laws of hydrodynamics. For calculation or estimation of the rates of these processes, we are based on the liquid drop model for small particles which was introduced in physics by N. Bohr about 80 years ago for the analysis of properties of atomic nuclei including the nuclear fusion and the hard sphere model (or the model of billiard balls) which was used by J. C. Maxwell 150 years ago and helped to create the kinetic theory of gases. These models along with the analysis of their accuracy allow one to study various processes, such as transport processes in gases involving small particles, charging of small particles in gases, chemical processes, atom attachment and quenching of excited atomic particles on the surface of a small particle, nucleation processes for small particles including coagulation, coalescence and growth of fractal aggregates, chain aggregates, fractal fibres and aerogels. Each analysis is finished by analytic formulas or simple models which allow us to calculate the rate of a certain real process with a known accuracy or to estimate this, and criteria of validity are given for these expressions obtained. Examples of real objects and processes involving small particles are analyzed.

The idealization is based on the assumption that the solid or liquid particles suspended in a gas can be modeled as macroscopically smooth, chemically inert, spherical bodies. Topics covered include transport processes, single particles, and generation and behavior of clouds. Emphasis is placed on fluid dynamics from the continuum regime to the free molecule regime. This book is comprised of 10 chapters and begins with an overview of definitions and classifications of aerocolloidal suspensions. The next chapter deals with the characteristics of aerial dispersions as provided for in the hard, smooth sphere picture. The basic mechanical parameters of an aerocolloidal system is described, along with certain different regimes of the idealized aerosol and various solutions of the Boltzmann equation. The reader is methodically introduced to the dynamics of single particles in the continuum approximation; heat and mass transfer to single particles in a continuum; formation of aerosols by nucleation of supersaturated vapor; and diffusion and dispersion of aerosol particles. The final chapter considers the interaction between aerosol particles, paying particular attention to the collision of inert spheres whose sticking probability is unity.
