Book Dynamics of Gas Surface Interactions

Download or read book Dynamics of Gas Surface Interactions written by Ricardo Diez Muino and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-02-26 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a representative survey of the state of the art of research on gas-surface interactions. It provides an overview of the current understanding of gas surface dynamics and, in particular, of the reactive and non-reactive processes of atoms and small molecules at surfaces. Leading scientists in the field, both from the theoretical and the experimental sides, write in this book about their most recent advances. Surface science grew as an interdisciplinary research area over the last decades, mostly because of new experimental technologies (ultra-high vacuum, for instance), as well as because of a novel paradigm, the ‘surface science’ approach. The book describes the second transformation which is now taking place pushed by the availability of powerful quantum-mechanical theoretical methods implemented numerically. In the book, experiment and theory progress hand in hand with an unprecedented degree of accuracy and control. The book presents how modern surface science targets the atomic-level understanding of physical and chemical processes at surfaces, with particular emphasis on dynamical aspects. This book is a reference in the field.

Book The Dynamics of Gas surface Energy Transfer in Collisions of Rare Gases with Organic Thin Films

Download or read book The Dynamics of Gas surface Energy Transfer in Collisions of Rare Gases with Organic Thin Films written by Brian Scott Day and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding mechanisms at the molecular level is essential for interpreting and predicting the outcome of processes in all fields of chemistry. Insight into gas-surface reaction dynamics can be gained through molecular beam scattering experiments combined with classical trajectory simulations. In particular, energy exchange and thermal accommodation in the initial collision, the first step in most chemical reactions, can be probed with these experimental and computational tools.

Book Gas Surface Interactions

Book excerpt: Molecular beam scattering techniques have firmly established themselves among the major tools for studying the kinetics and dynamics of gas- surface interactions. They have also proven themselves to be of great use in materials synthesis, most notably being used for the molecular beam epitaxial (MBE) growth of semiconductor substrates and superlattices. During the past few years our research group has been very active in developing new and quite general molecular beam techniques for studying the kinetic mechanisms of surface chemical reactions. We have, in particular, focused much of our attention on extending traditional molecular beam measurements to allow us to routinely explore coverage dependent kinetic mechanisms under essentially linearized conditions. These efforts have been quite successful. Our three molecular beam scattering arrangement is unique in the world, and significantly expands the range and power of modulated beam reactive scattering for studying complex kinetics at surfaces. The experimental methodology we have developed utilizes two continuous, independently adjustable beams to establish a desired steady state surface concentration, while a weaker modulated third beam induces small concentration perturbations around the selected steady state. This linearized approach permits the coupled differential equations which represent the overall surface reaction mechanism to be solved perturbatively, yielding quantitative information about the various kinetic steps which comprise overall reaction mechanisms.

Book Interaction of Gases with Surfaces

Download or read book Interaction of Gases with Surfaces written by Alexander V. Bogdanov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-03-22 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interface phenomena are most fascinating because of the mixing of different scales and the interference of diverse physical processes. This makes it necessary to use different levels of description: microscopic, kinetic, and gas-dynamical. A unified quasiclassical approach is used to answer practical questions dealing with inelastic gas-surface scattering, the kinetics of adsorption layers, the evolution of inhomogeneities and defects at the surface, the Knudsen layer, the development of boundary conditions on the kinetic and gas-dynamical levels, the determination of exchange and slip coefficients, and so on.

Book Dynamics of Gas Surface Interactions

Download or read book Dynamics of Gas Surface Interactions written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wide variety of gas-surface-and electron-surface scattering experiments, supported by lattice dynamics, molecular dynamics, and scattering calculations were carried out under the auspices of this grant. These studies were motivated by a desire to understand and control surface reactions, such as surface oxidation, the technological need to characterize the physical properties of thin films and surfaces, and the desire to understand how energy and momentum are exchanged at an interface subjected to gas-surface or electron-surface collisions. Experiments involved clean, alloyed, oxidized, and stepped metallic interfaces. Surface phonon dispersion relations, and hence surface forcefields, for clean and adsorbate covered systems were determined using inelastic atom and electron scattering, providing a microscopic basis for assessing structural stability at interfaces. Major advances occurred in our understanding of the forces which are present at atomic-level steps, as well as in the area of metallic oxidation, including oxide nucleation. Synergistic effects involving electrons were shown to significantly modify metallic oxidation kinetics. Other projects dealt with alloy surface structure and stability, adsorbate negative ion resonances, dipole interactions of adsorbates, spectroscopy of frustrated low energy adsorbate vibrational modes, molecular dynamics simulations of surface vibrational dynamics, and anharmonicity in surface potentials. p1.
