Download or read book Residue Reviews written by Francis A. Gunther and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worldwide concern in scientific, industrial, and governmental com munities over traces of toxic chemicals in foodstuffs and in both abiotic and biotic environments has justified the present triumvirate of specialized publications in this field: comprehensive reviews, rapidly published progress reports, and archival documentations. These three publications are integrated and scheduled to provide in international communication the coherency essential for nonduplicative and current progress in a field as dynamic and complex as environmental contamination and toxicology. Until now there has been no journal or other publication series reserved exclusively for the diversified literature on "toxic" chemicals in our foods, our feeds, our geographical surroundings, our domestic animals, our wild life, and ourselves. Around the world immense efforts and many talents have been mobilized to technical and other evaluations of natures, locales, magnitudes, fates, and toxicology of the persisting residues of these chemicals loosed upon the world. Among the sequelae of this broad new emphasis has been an inescapable need for an articulated set of authorita tive publications where one could expect to find the latest important world literature produced by this emerging area of science together with documentation of pertinent ancillary legislation.

Book Hazard Assessment of Chemicals

Download or read book Hazard Assessment of Chemicals written by Jitendra Saxena and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hazard Assessment of Chemicals: Current Developments, Volume 3 is a collection of expertly written articles that provide relevant and important information on the environmental and health hazard assessment of chemicals. The volume presents studies and expositions on such topics as hazard priority ranking system (or scoring system), a method to rank chemicals on the severity of their ill effects on the environment and human health. The book also tackles the effect of particulates on the toxic manifestations of chemicals; application of aquatic organisms as indicator systems for early detection of waterborne human carcinogens; techniques for metal speciation; and impact of fluorocarbons and other contaminants on stratospheric ozone. Environmentalists, ecologists, toxicologists, public safety officers and workers, and those concerned with the health effects of chemical agents in the environment will find this book very informative.

Book Environmental Dynamics of Pesticides

Download or read book Environmental Dynamics of Pesticides written by V. Freed and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pesticides have played a significant role in increasing food production, and in view of growing worldwide food demand we can expect the use of these chemicals to increase. However, some of them have found their way into the biosphere and have been classi fied as persistent toxic chemicals. This has resulted in serious concern about environmental contamination. Since we are going to continue using chemicals, we should learn more about such aspects as their transport in the environment, the relationship of their physical-chemical properties to transport, their persistence in the biosphere, their partitioning in the biota, and toxicological and epidemiological forecasting based on physical-chemical properties. Environmental chemodynamics is the name given to a subject which deals with some of the above topics, utilizing the principles of such disciplines as chemistry, physics, systems analysis, modelling, engineering, and medical and biological sciences. To ensure the safety of the environment, we must know more about the chemodynamical behavior of pesticides and related chemi cals. The purpose of the symposium "Environmental Dynamics of Pes ticides" was to explore the concept of chemodynamics as applied to pesticides and thus may help in developing the emerging field of environmental chemodynamics. The symposium was held during the l37th National American Chemical Society Meeting at Los Angeles, California, during April, 1974. The three sessions in the sym posium were chai'red by Drs. V.H. Freed, D.G. Crosby, and R. Haque.

Book DDT Silent Spring and the Rise of Environmentalism

Download or read book DDT Silent Spring and the Rise of Environmentalism written by Thomas Dunlap and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2015-09-14 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No single event played a greater role in the birth of modern environmentalism than the publication of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring and its assault on insecticides. The documents collected by Thomas Dunlap trace shifting attitudes toward DDT and pesticides in general through a variety of sources: excerpts from scientific studies and government reports, advertisements from industry journals, articles from popular magazines, and the famous “Fable for Tomorrow” from Silent Spring. Beginning with attitudes toward nature at the turn of the twentieth century, the book moves through the use and early regulation of pesticides; the introduction and early success of DDT; the discovery of its environmental effects; and the uproar over Silent Spring. It ends with recent debates about DDT as a potential solution to malaria in Africa.
