A. , from September 15th through 18th, 1975. Fifty-three astronomers from Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Czechoslovakia, France, Israel, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Vatican attended and participated in the Symposium. This volume, which parallels the actual program closely, contains the papers presented at the Symposium plus most of the discussion following the papers. New observational techniques and fresh theoretical ideas have resulted over the past few years in a renewed interest in Be and shell stars. At IAU Symposium No. 51 on Extended Atmospheres and Circumstellar Matter in Spectroscopic Binary Sys tems, the Otto Struve Memorial Symposium, in Parksville, British Columbia, Canada, three years ago, a number of participants expressed the wish to organize a symposium on Be and shell stars. If we wish to identify an official 'Father of IAU Symposium No. 70', it would be Mirek Plavec who, in his capacity as President of IAU Commission 42 (Photometric Double Stars) requested and received the cooperation of Commissions 29 (Stellar Spectra) and 36 (Stellar Atmospheres), suggested an Organizing Committee, and wrote to the IAU General Secretary in 1973 requesting that the IAU Executive Committee approve the proposed confer ence as an IAU Symposium.

Book excerpt: Radioastronomy has painted an extraordinary picture of the Galactic interstellar medium, which displays an amazing organization and structuring of matter from very hot ultra-diluted media to very cold denser milieus considered as the cradles of stars. In these latter environments, the discovery of a chemical diversity of molecules, including those associated with precursors to life itself, immediately brought to light the question of the mechanisms leading to their formation and persistence at temperatures as low as 10 K. The chemical networks developed to understand telescope observations required a great deal of physical and chemical parameters relevant to interstellar conditions, particularly at very low temperatures. These included the rate coefficients of thousands of gas phase chemical reactions. Such data were missing in the 1970s, when the very first molecular discoveries were made. Then, in the early eighties, it was realized that uniform supersonic flows were ideal chemical reactors to study reaction kinetics at interstellar temperatures.Uniform Supersonic Flows in Chemical Physics reviews 40 years of use of such reactors, the so-called CRESU machines, focusing on major breakthroughs brought to chemical physics, physical chemistry, astrophysics and astrochemistry by the various experiments carried out with such apparatuses. The wealth of kinetic data at very low temperatures provided new targets for the predictions of theory, with new theoretical methods being developed to explain observed behavior. The first two chapters describe the physical context of reaction kinetics at very low temperatures and the requirements needed to run optimally such uniform supersonic flows, together with a historical perspective. Chapters 3 to 9 describe the various families of chemical processes that have been explored within the CRESU technique, highlighting major advances and offering an exhaustive up-to-date bibliography. Chapters 10 and 11 show how these experimental results have helped in improving the ideas in quantum chemistry and interstellar modeling. The book concludes with an overview of potential perspectives and new routes to be explored.

Circumstellar Matter was selected as the topic because of important contributions toward research in the field by recent observations in the infrared and submillimetre, particularly with the two telescopes which the Observatory has both operated and built instru mentation for - the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) and the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The programme aimed to cover as many aspects of circumstellar matter as could fit into a one-week meeting, omitting only planetary nebulae, which had been well served by meetings in the previous two years. We thank the international scientific advisory com mittee (overleaf) for their help in selecting the Invited Reviewers around which the programme was built. The Invited Reviews and oral contributions are included in the order and sections in which they were presented, even where re-ordering might have been more logical. We did not attempt to categorise the poster contributions but have included them in alphabetical order. An evening session for viewing and discussing posters in an unhurried atmosphere was very successful. A competition for the best poster was held and the prize was awarded for that by Lindqvist, Lucas, Olofsson, Omont, Eriksson & Gustafsson.

It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documenta tion of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, compared to which our system of accumu lating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 32 contains literature published in 1982 and received before February 11, 1983; some older literature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included. We acknowledge with thanks contributions to this volume by Dr. J. Bou~a, Prague, who surveyed journals and publications in Czech and supplied us with abstracts in English.
