Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world has ended, and the few who are left struggle day by day to survive. They hoped that the worst thing they would have to deal with in this new world would be the walkers, come to rip and tear and kill. They were wrong. There are worse things than zombies. A refuge for the last remnants of the United States has gone silent and dark, while another has succumbed to the basest parts of human nature. Yet all is not lost, for in the farthest and coldest corner of the globe, marooned in an icy prison, a scientist has made a stunning breakthrough. A desparate rescue mission is launched to bring back the one person who can save them all, but the trip is long and dangerous, and its fate is uncertain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invoking key concepts from the philosophical writings of Gilles Deleuze and Giorgio Agamben, The Dark Interval examines a subtle but distinct iconography of passivity, stillness and profound self-affection that recurs across noir films of every era. In doing so, it identifies the emergence of a specific cinematic figure – the 'intervallic' noir protagonist exposed to the redemptive force of his or her own passion. Significantly, the book contextualises the iconography of film noir in relation to prior art-historical visual traditions, in particular earlier representations of melancholia and the saturnine, locating noir against a much broader canvas than has been the norm. Examining central noir films of the classic and modern era (The Killers, The Man Who Wasn't There) as well as films at the peripheries of noir (from Jacques Tourneur's Cat People to Wong Kar Wai's 2046), the book locates a series of iconographic gestures, performance traditions and affective tonalities at once specific to noir and yet resonant with a deeper cultural and philosophical heritage. It is a meditation that uniquely grapples with the look and the feel of noir, and which dares to detect a unique quality of 'beatitude' that runs through a certain strain of noir films. In doing so, it illuminates why film noir remains one of the most provocative and affecting visual milieus of our time.

Book The Intervals of Cinema

  • Author : Jacques Rancière
  • Publisher : Verso Books
  • Release : 2014-10-07
  • ISBN : 1781686939
  • Pages : 127 pages

Download or read book The Intervals of Cinema written by Jacques Rancière and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cinema, like language, can be said to exist as a system of differences. In his latest book the acclaimed philosopher Jacques Rancire relates cinema to literature and theatre. With literature, he argues, cinema takes its narrative conventions, while at the same time effacing its images and its philosophy; and it rejects theatre, while also fulfilling theatre's dream. Built on these contradictions, the cinema is the real, material space in which one feels moved by the spectacle of shadows. Thus for Rancire, the cinema is the always disappointed dream of a language of images.

Book excerpt: [Back Cover] “The present work combines two different forms but of similar content: a poetic form and a dramatic form noted as “closet” drama because intended for reading rather than a staged production. In both cases erotic content is presented in allusion to a variety of metaphors overlapped in the erotic play of opposites. Any literal erotic content is thus ambivalent insofar as the sublime aspect of cuniunctio competes with its common and familiar demonstrations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the writer of the classic Letters to a Young Poet, reflections on grief and loss, collected and published here in one volume for the first time. “A great poet’s reflections on our greatest mystery.”—Billy Collins “A treasure . . . The solace Rilke offers is uncommon, uplifting and necessary.”—The Guardian Gleaned from Rainer Maria Rilke’s voluminous, never-before-translated letters to bereaved friends and acquaintances, The Dark Interval is a profound vision of the mourning process and a meditation on death’s place in our lives. Following the format of Letters to a Young Poet, this book arranges Rilke’s letters into an uninterrupted sequence, showcasing the full range of the great author’s thoughts on death and dying, as well as his sensitive and moving expressions of consolation and condolence. Presented with care and authority by master translator Ulrich Baer, The Dark Interval is a literary treasure, an indispensable resource for anyone searching for solace, comfort, and meaning in a time of grief. Praise for The Dark Interval “Even though each of these letters of condolence is personalized with intimate detail, together they hammer home Rilke’s remarkable truth about the death of another: that the pain of it can force us into a ‘deeper . . . level of life’ and render us more ‘vibrant.’ Here we have a great poet’s reflections on our greatest mystery.”—Billy Collins “As we live our lives, it is possible to feel not sadness or melancholy but a rush of power as the life of others passes into us. This rhapsodic volume teaches us that death is not a negation but a deepening experience in the onslaught of existence. What a wise and victorious book!”—Henri Cole
