Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duty of the Free States, or Remarks Suggested by the Case of the Creole I respectfully ask your attention, fellow-citizens of the Free States, to a subject of great and pressing im portance. The case of the Creole, taken by itself, or separated from the principles which are complicated with it, however it might engage my feelings, would not have moved me to the present address. I am not writing to plead the cause of a hundred or more men, scattered through the West Indies, and claimed as slaves. In a world abounding with so much wrong and wo, we at this distance can spend but a few thoughts on these strangers. I rejoice that they are free; I trust that they will remain so and with these feelings, I dismiss them from my thoughts. The case of the Creole involves great and Vital principles, and as such I now invite to it your serious consideration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Duty of the Free States: Or Remarks Suggested by the Case of the Creole This statement of the case of the Creole is derived chiefly from the testimony of the officers and crew ofthe vessel, and very naturally falls under suspicion of being colored, in part, by prejudice and passion. We must hear the other side, and compare all the witnesses, before we can understand the whole case. The main facts, however, cannot be misunderstood. The shipping of the slaves at Norfolk, the rising of a part of their number against the officers of the vessel, the success of the insurrection, the carrying of the vessel into the port of Nassau, and the recognition and treatment of the slaves as free by the British authorities of that place; these material points of the case cannot be questioned. The letter of our government, stating these facts as grounds of complaint against England, is written with much caution, and seems wanting in the tone of earnest ness and confidence which naturally belongs to a good cause. It does not go to the heart of the case. It relies more on the comity of nations, than on principles of justice and natural law. Still, in one respect it is de cided. It protests against, and complains of, the British authorities, and calls loudly for redress. Lt'maintains, that it was the plain and obvious duty of the authori ties at Nassau to give aid and succor to the officers of the Creole in reducing the slaves to subjection, in re sumlug their voyage with their cargo of men as well as of tobacco, and in bringing the insurgents to trial in this country. It maintains, that the claims of the American masters to their slaves existed, and were in force in the British port, and that these claims ought to have been acknowledged and sustained by the British magistrate. The plain inference is, that the government of the United States is bound to spread a shield over American slavery abroad as well as at home. Such is the letter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address Illustrative of the Nature and Power of the Slave States: And the Duties of the Free States; Delivered at the Request of the Inhabitants of the Town of Quincy, Mass;, On Thursday, June 5, 1856 The question to be decided, at the ensuing Presidential elections, is, Who shall henceforth rule this nation, - the Slave States, or the Free States? All the aspects of our political atmosphere indicate an approaching hurricane. Whether it shall sweep this Union from its foundations, or whether it shall be prosperously weathered, depends, under Heaven, on the man whom the people shall choose to pilot them through the coming storm. In my judgment, that man is John Charles Fremont. I have not, and never had, any connection with the party that selected him. Personally, I know him not; but I have read the history of his life, and believe him to be a man as much marked out by Providence for the present exigency of our nation as Washington was for that of our American Revolution. He comes, from whence great men usually do come, from the mass of the people. Nursed in difficulties, practised in surmounting them; wise in council; full of resource; self-possessed in danger; fearless and foremost in every useful enterprise; unexceptionable in morals; with an intellect elevated by nature, and cultivated in laborious fields of duty, - I trust he is destined to save this Union from dissolution; to restore the Constitution to its original purity; and to relieve that instrument, which Washington designed for the preservation and enlargement of freedom, from being any longer perverted to the multiplication of Slave States and the extension of slavery. Carlile, of Virginia: On the Bill to Confiscate the Property and Free the Slaves of the Rebels; Delivered in the Senate of the United States, March 11, 1862 To recognize the confederate States for their benefit is no part of our duty; but to shape our policy to accord with events, and enable us to fulfill a high purpose, is what we are imperatively called Upon to do. The fiction Upon which we are now proceeding binds us to slavery; and hence the national arms, instead of being directed against it, are held where they may at any moment be required to be turned to its defense. The wish of the masses of our people is to conquer the seceded States to the authority of the Union, and hold them as subject provinces. Book Speech of Mr Cook of Illinois on the Restriction of Slavery in Missouri

Download or read book Speech of Mr Cook of Illinois on the Restriction of Slavery in Missouri written by Daniel Pope Cook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speech of Mr. Cook, of Illinois, on the Restriction of Slavery in Missouri: Delivered in the House of Representatives of the United States, February 4, 1820 Mr. Chairman, gives rise to a particular interest, superadded to the common interest felt by the people of Illinois. Thus situated, I feel it my bounden duty to give the amendment my support, and shall give that situation as an excuse for my venturing to trespass upon the attention of the committee, by taking a share in this debate. But, Mr. Chairman, before I, engage in the examination of those great questions which are involved in this amendment, I must beg the indulgence of the committee while I attend to some remarks which have fallen from gentlemen in the course of this discussion. It has been remarked as frequently as gentlemen have been heard in the opposition, that they are sworn to support the constitution; and it has been further said by a gentleman from Virginia, (Mr. Randolph, ) that those who support the amendment are striving to enter the temple of the constitution at the hour of midnight, to violate its sanctuary. It is further said by a gentleman from Massachusetts, (Mr. Holmes, ) that they are striving for power, and are paving the way for some master juggler, behind the scene, to ride into the Chief Magistracy of the nation. [Here Mr. Holmes interrupted Mr. Cook, and observed, that he had said, that he believed there was a party who had conjured up this hobby, playing a deep game, and who, he believed, intended to try to turn this measure to their advantage, and ultimately to secure to their leader the Presidential chair. But that, from that party he had expressly excepted the gentlemen of this committee.] Without having any recollection of the exception How spoken of by the gentleman, continued Mr. C. I must say, that the explanation has made the insinuation, which I before considered a direct atttack upon the integrity of those with whom I am acting on this occasion, no less unpalatable than it was before. That there has been a hobby conjured up out of doors, and by urging it that we are striving for power, and that a master juggler at the head of that party, behind the scene, expects to turn that power, if attained, to his advantage, is, to my mind, leaving the imputation as strong in fact, though not so in expression, as I originally understood it. Sir, if I were to look through this committee for one to suspect of being under the influence of such motives as have been insinuated by the honorable member, there is no m.an on whom that suspicion would sooner fix itself than the gentleman who has just interrupted me. And I would further remark that I, as well as gentlemen in the opposition, have sworn to support the constitution; and while I will say to them "act in pursuance of your honest convictions," allow me also to do the same.
