Book The Christian and the Magistrate

Download or read book The Christian and the Magistrate written by Pierre Viret and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-31 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the Biblical definition of a civil magistrate? Should Christians be subject to them? Should civil governments be subject to God? Is physical resistance to authority ever justifiable? Under what circumstances? And what is a Christian's role with respect to the civil sphere? 16th century Swiss Reformer Pierre Viret once expressed his feelings of political and military turmoil: "By nature I have always loved peace, and was always horrified at all dissensions and troubles." Despite the man's peace-loving nature, however, God chose to place Viret in some of the most politically tumultuous situations imaginable throughout his life. In these times Viret was compelled to search the Scriptures in an effort to instruct his congregations--as well as countless others asking his advice--on the Biblical definition and response to civil government, war, resistance against authorities, tyrants, and many other political matters. The writings contained in The Christian and the Magistrate are a collection of some of the applications Viret offered of the Biblical truths pertaining to magistrates and the Christian's duty to them.

Book The Life and Writings of Thomas Helwys

Download or read book The Life and Writings of Thomas Helwys written by Thomas Helwys and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the earliest Baptist voices and martyr for his faith, Thomas Helwys was the first permanent Baptist and founder of the first Baptist church in England. He is best known for his seminal work on religious liberty, ""A Short Declaration of the Mystery of Iniquity"". Helwys' other extant writings include full length theological treatises, personal letters and the first known ""English Baptist Confession of Faith"". These works demonstrate his theological shift from English Separatism to recognizable Baptist tenets. His body of work clearly espouses religious liberty, priesthood of all believers, soul competency, a reverence for the bible, and the autonomy of the local church. In ""Thomas Helwys: Life and Writings"", Joe Early has provided the reader with a concise theological biography of Helwys and a compilation of all his extant writings. It is the first time that all of Thomas Helwys' writings have been available in one volume.
